What game modes are available right now?

Two modes are live at Early Access launch. Exploration Mode is the survival sandbox: resource gathering, crafting, combat, zone progression, taming, fishing, farming, alchemy, and boss encounters. Think Minecraft Survival with a stronger progression structure. Creative Mode gives you every block and prefab unlocked with no survival mechanics — full building freedom, no resource limits. How does zone progression work?

Hytale’s world is divided into four zones, each requiring progressively better gear to survive. You cannot skip zones — Zone 2 enemies will kill a player in crude armour. The progression path runs:

Zone 1: Emerald Wilds — Grasslands and forests; crude and iron-tier resources. Your starting zone.
Zone 2: Howling Sands — Desert biome; Thorium ore. Heat Resistance gear required to survive.

What is the Memory System?

The Memory System is Hytale’s permanent progression mechanic — upgrades that survive death and carry across every play session. Near your spawn, you will find a Forgotten Temple with a statue. Interacting with it activates the system. After that, every creature encounter generates memory tokens, which you spend at the Heart of Orbis to unlock new crafting recipes, expand your inventory with bag slots, and eventually access the Teleporter fast-travel network across zones.

How does gear progression work?

Gear follows a strict five-tier ladder: Crude (sticks, plant fibre, rubble) → Iron → Thorium → Cobalt → Adamantite. Each tier requires a specific workbench and zone-locked materials. You cannot jump tiers — Thorium weapons need Thorium ingots from Zone 2, and you need decent gear just to mine Thorium safely inside Zone 2.

The intended loop for each zone: enter with the previous tier’s gear, mine the zone’s ore while surviving on the edge, upgrade using what you collect, then take on the bosses. What happens when you die?

When you die, your equipped items and backpack contents drop at a grave marker at your death location. The grave persists for a limited time — return to it to recover your gear. Memory System upgrades (bag slots, crafting unlocks, teleporter access) are permanent and survive death regardless of what happens to your inventory. If you die underground, the grave marker shows your X/Z coordinates but not your vertical Y depth, so note your approximate level before risky underground dives. How long does it take to complete Hytale?

Early Access does not have a definitive end screen. A first playthrough from Zone 1 through Zone 4, clearing the major bosses, typically takes 40 to 60 hours depending on how much time you spend building, farming, fishing, or taming. Players who focus on exploration and combat can reach the endgame faster; builders and completionists will spend much longer. Creative Mode has no endpoint. Multiplayer and Servers

How do I play Hytale with friends?

Three methods, in order of simplicity:

Share Code (easiest, no setup): In your world, go to Online Play → Allow Players → copy the generated share code. Friends enter it in the main menu Join screen. No port forwarding required. Supports up to 8 players.
Direct Connect: Friends enter your IP address if you are hosting locally. Requires port forwarding unless you are on the same LAN.
Dedicated Server: A persistent server your friends can join any time, whether you are online or not.

How many players can be on one server?

Shared-code worlds (the simple host-from-your-machine method) support up to 8 players. Dedicated servers can go higher: community reports suggest 20 to 30 players on modest VPS hardware, with more headroom on higher-spec machines. How does Hytale modding work?
