Hytale Multiplayer Guide: How to Play with Friends (Share Codes, Servers and Co-op Tips)

Verified on Hytale Early Access (January 2026 build). Connection methods may change with future patches.

Hytale has three different ways to let friends join your world, and they’re not equally obvious. The Share Code is buried in the ESC menu, Direct Connect requires knowing the correct port format, and the Saved Server list doesn’t even appear until you’ve used one of the other methods first. Most guides cover one method; this one covers all three — when to use each, what to do when they fail, and how to structure your first multiplayer session once you’re actually in.

Quick Start: In-Game with a Friend in Under Two Minutes

For a casual first session, the Share Code method is all you need:

  1. Load your world fully, then press ESC → Online Play → toggle “Allow Other Players to Join” to On → click Save.
  2. Copy the share code that appears and send it to your friend via direct message — not a group chat or stream.
  3. Your friend opens Hytale → Servers → Join via Code → pastes the code → Connect.
  4. Wait for the world to load — any server-side mods sync to your friend automatically on connection. No manual installs needed.
  5. You’re in. The session stays live as long as you (the host) remain in-game.

That’s the whole process for a casual session. The rest of this guide covers Direct Connect and the Saved Server list, the CGNAT fix when share codes fail, how mod syncing actually works, and a co-op role split that stops your group all doing the same thing.

Which Connection Method Should You Use?

All three methods live at Main Menu → Servers. The right one depends on your situation [1][5]:

Your SituationBest MethodWhy
Casual session with 2-5 friends, no setupShare CodeOne toggle in the ESC menu; UPnP handles routing automatically
Joining a rented or public dedicated serverDirect Connect (IP:Port)Permanent address; doesn’t expire; works without codes
Returning to a server you play on regularlySaved Server ListOne-click access; no addresses to type each session

Method 1: Share Code — Easiest for Friend Groups

Share codes are Hytale’s built-in solution for “let my friends join without touching a router.” The host generates a session-specific code; guests paste it and connect. No port forwarding or external tools required — under normal conditions.

Generating a code (host steps)

  1. Load your world fully — the code only generates once you’re in-game [1].
  2. Press ESC → Online Play.
  3. Toggle Allow Other Players to Join to On.
  4. Optionally set a password — Hytale embeds it in the code, so guests don’t type it separately each session [1].
  5. Click Save — UPnP negotiates with your router and the share code appears [2].
  6. Copy the code and send it by direct message to your friends.

Joining with a code (guest steps)

  1. Main Menu → Servers → Join via Code.
  2. Paste the share code → Connect.
  3. Enter a password if one wasn’t embedded.

Security: never post share codes publicly

I made this mistake early on — I sent a share code to a Discord server with sixty members instead of a direct message, and two strangers joined the world within minutes. Share codes contain your IP address encoded directly in them, and they expire at a timestamp baked into the code itself [1]. Post one publicly and anyone who sees it before expiry gets your home IP. Send codes only in private messages to people you trust.

When share codes fail: the CGNAT fix

If a friend consistently can’t connect despite the code looking correct, your ISP may use Carrier-Grade NAT — multiple customers sharing a public IP — which prevents UPnP from working. To check: run tracert -d 8.8.8.8 in Command Prompt. If you see multiple private IP hops (10.x.x.x or 100.x.x.x) before a public address, you’re behind CGNAT [3].

The fix: both players install Tailscale, join the same Tailscale network, then the host regenerates the share code. Tailscale addresses get embedded as high-priority connection candidates, bypassing the NAT entirely [3]. If that’s too much friction, try swapping hosts — whoever has a simpler router or ISP setup should generate the code.

Method 2: Direct Connect — For Dedicated Servers

When you have a static server address — either a rented server or a friend running a dedicated instance — Direct Connect is the right tool [4][5]:

  1. Main Menu → Servers → Direct Connect.
  2. Enter the address in IP:Port format, for example: 203.0.113.25:5520 or play.example.com:5520.
  3. Click Connect.

Hytale’s default port is 5520 UDP — not TCP like Minecraft [5]. If you’re setting up port forwarding, open UDP specifically. For LAN play on the same Wi-Fi network, use the host machine’s local IP (e.g., 192.168.1.50:5520) — faster and no port forwarding needed.

One common silent failure: version mismatches. The client and server must run identical game builds. If Direct Connect fails with no error message, confirm both sides are on the same version before troubleshooting the connection itself.

Method 3: Saved Server List — Bookmark Your Regular Server

Once you have a dedicated server address you’ll use repeatedly, save it so you’re not typing it each session [4]:

  1. Main Menu → Servers → Add Server.
  2. Enter a display name (e.g., “Our Survival World”) and the IP:Port address.
  3. Save — the entry appears in your server list for one-click access.

This doesn’t change how the connection works — it’s a bookmark. But eliminating the address lookup step matters once your group plays daily. A saved server also removes the dependency on the host sending a fresh code each session.

How Mods Sync Automatically When You Join

Hytale’s server-first mod architecture means that when you join a modded server, the server streams modified content directly to your client on connection — no pre-installation required [6]. Server admins can update or swap mods, and every player gets the changes automatically on their next join.

This is core architecture, not an add-on. Even singleplayer runs on a local server internally, which is what makes centrally managed mod distribution possible [6]. In practice: one person in your group manages the server’s mod list, and everyone else just connects. No “make sure you install version X of mod Y” coordination required.

The exception is client-side resources — custom textures, UI overlays, sounds. These get installed locally by dropping a .zip or .jar into your local mods/ folder, or managed through the CurseForge launcher [7]. Server-side gameplay mods auto-sync; client-side cosmetics stay on your machine. For a curated list of mods worth running on your server, see our Best Hytale Mods 2026 guide.

Share Code Session vs. Dedicated Server: Which Does Your Group Need?

FactorShare Code (Hosted)Dedicated / Rented Server
Setup effortNone — one ESC menu toggleJava 25, server software, port forwarding or hosting panel
UptimeOnly while host is in-game24/7 — world accessible without the host online
PerformanceHost PC runs game + server simultaneouslyDedicated resources; no rendering overhead on the server side
Player capacityBest for 2-5 playersScales to 40-100+ with sufficient RAM
CostFree — uses host hardware~$5-$15/month for a basic rented instance
Best forOccasional sessions, testing buildsGroups playing three or more times per week

The practical threshold: if your group is waiting for the host to log on before play can start, it’s time for a dedicated server. For the full setup process — Java installation, server configuration, rented hosting options — see our Hytale server setup guide.

Cross-Play and Platform Availability

Hytale Early Access (January 2026) is PC only [8][9]. Console and mobile versions are planned but have no confirmed release date. There’s no cross-platform play to worry about because there are no other platforms yet.

Every player needs their own PC copy of Hytale ($19.99) and the standalone Hytale launcher. The game isn’t available on Steam — Steam’s policies conflict with Hytale’s modding architecture, so Hypixel Studios opted for a direct launcher instead [9]. Mac and Linux support is in progress; Windows is the confirmed EA platform. If a friend can’t connect, confirm they’re on Windows and using the Hytale launcher directly before troubleshooting the connection method.

Co-op Tips: Role Split and Shared Base Setup

Most friend groups start a Hytale world and immediately scatter — three people gathering the same resources, no base built, and the host running out of food buffs in Zone 2 because nobody stayed back to farm. A light role structure prevents this without making the game feel like a job.

Recommended role split for a 3-player group

RoleFocusWhy It Matters Early
ExplorerScouting zones, locating the Forgotten Temple, activating the Heart of OrbisThe Heart of Orbis must be activated before Memory collection counts — one dedicated explorer gets there faster. 100 Memories unlocks Ancient Gateways for the whole group [10]
Builder / CrafterBase construction, Arcanist’s Workbench setup, teleporter networkA teleporter at base eliminates 20-30 minutes of walking per session for everyone. The builder who prioritises this first pays dividends for the whole group
Farmer / GathererFood production, resource stockpiling, animal tamingHytale has no hunger bar, but food grants timed combat buffs. A dedicated farmer means the explorer and builder fight at full strength without grinding resources themselves

For two players: explorer/fighter + builder/farmer hybrid works better. For four or more: run two explorers in parallel zones to double Memory collection speed toward the 100-Memory Ancient Gateway unlock.

Starter shared base checklist

  • Teleporter on day one — craft one at base using the Arcanist’s Workbench immediately; our Hytale Teleporter Guide has the exact recipe and network setup
  • Central crafting hub — Arcanist’s Workbench, Builder’s Bench, and storage chests in the same room eliminates the “where did you put the Thorium?” problem
  • Shared stash chest — one chest designated for rare drops prevents the explorer consuming Thorium Bars or Essence of Void the crafter needs
  • Animal pens early — passive food and Life Essence generation with minimal ongoing effort
  • Activate the Heart of Orbis before anyone explores — Memory collection is retroactive to Heart activation, not to game start. Every zone visited before activation is wasted progress [10]

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play Hytale multiplayer on console or mobile?

Not in Early Access. Hytale EA is PC only — console and mobile support are planned but have no release date [8].

Do I need a new share code every session?

Yes — share codes are session-specific and expire when the host logs off. For regular play without fresh codes each time, use Add Server to bookmark the host’s address, or upgrade to a dedicated server with a permanent address [4].

What happens to the world when the host logs off?

In a Share Code session, the world closes for all players the moment the host disconnects. On a dedicated server, the world stays accessible and all players can continue regardless of who’s online.

Do my friends need to install mods before joining my server?

No — server-side gameplay mods sync automatically on connection. Your friends don’t need to install anything. Only client-side cosmetic mods (textures, UI overlays) require local installation [6].

My friend can’t connect via share code — what do I check first?

In order: (1) Same game version on both sides — version mismatches fail silently. (2) CGNAT — run tracert -d 8.8.8.8; multiple private IPs before a public one means CGNAT, fix with Tailscale [3]. (3) Swap hosts — whoever has the simpler router/ISP setup should try generating the code instead.

Getting Your Group Into Hytale

For most friend groups, the Share Code method is all you’ll ever need — thirty seconds from singleplayer to multiplayer, zero configuration. Add the Saved Server list when you find a dedicated server worth returning to regularly, and move to a rented dedicated instance when your group’s schedule no longer matches the host’s availability.

The two habits worth building from session one: activate the Heart of Orbis before anyone explores, and place a teleporter at base within the first hour. Both compound across sessions — Memory milestones unlock faster travel options for everyone, and the teleporter removes the biggest time sink in Hytale co-op.
