Deerclops is a 7,000-HP pre-Hardmode boss (11,900 in Expert, 15,172 in Master) that you summon with a Deer Thing, and it turns purple and completely immune to damage when the player is more than 30 tiles away. The Terraria Wiki states that trigger purely as distance and never mentions line of sight, so the practical rule is simple: stay inside 30 tiles or your weapons do nothing.
Deerclops came in with the Don’t Starve crossover in Terraria 1.4.3 (18 November 2021) and the fight is optional. Our Terraria bosses in order guide covers the full progression ladder; this one covers an optional boss that sits beside it.
Quick start: what to do first
- Have at least 260 to 280 health and a full set of Gold or Platinum armor. That is the wiki strategy page’s own floor.
- Beat the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu first. The wiki says fighting Deerclops before that is not recommended.
- Collect 3 Flinx Fur, 5 Demonite Ore (Corruption) or Crimtane Ore (Crimson) and 1 Lens.
- Craft the Deer Thing at a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar.
- Clear a large flat area in the surface Snow biome, add one or two layers of platforms and set a bed nearby.
- Drink a Warmth Potion, use the Deer Thing and stay within 30 tiles of the boss.
Checked against the Terraria Wiki on 12 October 2026. The wiki lists 1.4.5.8 (23 August 2026) as the latest desktop version. Values can change with patches, so verify numbers in game.
Deerclops at a glance
Deerclops has 10 defense in every mode, and its health more than doubles between Classic and Master.
| Stat | Classic | Expert | Master |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max life | 7,000 | 11,900 | 15,172 |
| Contact damage | 20 | 40 | 60 |
| Ice Spike damage | 26 | 52 | 78 |
| Debris damage | 36 | 72 | 108 |
| Shadow Hand damage | 20 | 40 | 60 |
| Roar: Slow duration | 12 s | 24 s | 30 s |
| Ice Spike: Frozen duration | 0.33 s | 0.67 s | 0.83 s |
It has 100% knockback resistance and is immune to Confused. It lives in the surface Snow biome, it is optional, and its guaranteed rewards are coins (12 gold 50 silver) and a Healing Potion stack.
If another guide gives different numbers, check its date. The wiki’s version history says Deerclops’s defense was raised from 0 to 10, its Expert health went from 14,000 to 11,900 and its Master health from 21,000 to 15,172, and the natural respawn chance was cut to 25%, all in 1.4.3.3. A guide written before that patch will quote a tankier Expert fight and a defenseless boss.
How to summon Deerclops
Craft a Deer Thing at a Demon Altar (Corruption worlds) or a Crimson Altar (Crimson worlds) and use it in the Snow or Ice biome; it works at any time of day. The Deer Thing page gives the recipe below.
| Ingredient | Amount | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Flinx Fur | 3 | Snow Flinx in the Ice biome (the Cavern-layer Snow biome). Every kill drops fur: 1 to 2 in Classic, 1 to 3 in Expert. |
| Demonite Ore or Crimtane Ore | 5 | Mined from your world’s evil biome, or dropped by the Eye of Cthulhu (30 to 90 of the type your world has). |
| Lens | 1 | Demon Eye and Wandering Eye, 33% each. |

The slowest part is the fur: three Snow Flinx kills is the minimum, and you have to go into the underground ice to find them. Our Terraria biomes guide shows where the Snow and Ice biomes generate. One shortcut: Frozen Chests in the Cavern layer have a 1-in-5 chance of holding a ready-made Deer Thing.
Source disagreement. One hosting company’s Deerclops guide lists 3 ore and says to craft it “in the Snow biome”. The wiki lists 5 ore and an altar, and it is the source we used. Check the recipe screen in your own version.
Natural spawns
Deerclops can also appear on its own, at midnight, on the surface Snow biome during a Blizzard. The wiki’s conditions: a player with at least 200 max health or 9 defense, no town NPCs within a 240 by 135 tile rectangle around that player, and no other boss or invasion active. After you have beaten it once, the natural spawn chance drops to 25%. The upside of the NPC rule is that a base near your town keeps it from showing up uninvited.
The 30-tile rule: why your weapons stop working
When the player is more than 30 tiles from Deerclops it turns dark purple with a magenta eye, becomes immune to all damage, and reverts once you come back inside 30 tiles.
The Roar is the reason this matters. Roar applies Slow (12, 24 or 30 seconds by mode) to players within 50 tiles. Put the two wiki numbers side by side and there is a 20-tile band, 30 to 50 tiles out, where you can be slowed but cannot damage it. That overlap is our inference from two documented figures, not something we measured in game, but it explains why backing away to snipe feels like it makes things worse.
The fix is a tight arena. The wiki recommends a large flat area with one or two layers of platforms, because Deerclops follows you and can rise through blocks to reach you. Build for a 30-tile fight, not a 100-tile one.
Attacks and how to dodge them
Deerclops uses ice spikes when you are close and debris when you are not, and Shadow Hands punish standing above it.
| Attack | Trigger | What it does | What works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ice Spikes | You are close | A wave of spikes races at you and freezes you. Every third wave travels a shorter distance, starts later and spreads both ways. | Move before the third wave. The wiki says running between its legs avoids the first two. |
| Debris | You are further away | It scoops and throws chunks in large vertical arcs. Debris passes through blocks. | Keep moving and jump; a roof or platform will not stop it. |
| Shadow Hands | You stay above it | It pauses, roars and summons five hands around you. In Expert they spawn periodically, predict your movement and come faster as its health drops. | Don’t hover over it. A Cobalt Shield or Gladiator armor helps with the knockback. |
| Roar | Occasionally | Slow to every player within 50 tiles. | Swiftness Potion, slow-resist accessories. |

The wiki does not say whether ice spikes stop at walls or travel over terrain, and neither does its strategy page, so don’t build a plan around hiding behind blocks. Debris is the attack documented to pass through them.
Three ways to fight it
- Legs strategy: stand under its torso between its legs. The strategy page says most attacks, ice spikes included, can’t reach you there; the dangers left are Shadow Hands and the third spike hit.
- Short skybridge: a flat platform line 20 to 30 blocks up and about 100 long. Deerclops stands below and follows you but doesn’t use Ice Spikes, only Shadow Hands and debris.
- Bed respawn: set your spawn in the arena. Deerclops doesn’t despawn while a player has been near it recently, and unlike other non-event bosses it doesn’t vanish right after it kills you, so you can chip at the same health bar across deaths.
Gear, buffs and when not to fight it
Don’t attempt Deerclops under roughly 260 health or without Gold or Platinum armor, and don’t go before you have beaten the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu (our Eater of Worlds guide and Brain of Cthulhu guide cover each). If you still need Skeletron for the Dungeon, our Skeletron guide is the better next stop, and the Terraria progression guide shows what else to finish first.
For the arena itself, the strategy page suggests regeneration helpers: Campfires, Heart Lanterns and a honey pool, plus a Nurse and a Dryad housed nearby for healing and a defense buff. None of it is required, but all of it is cheap compared with the cost of a failed attempt.
The Warmth Potion is the best cheap prep. It cuts Deerclops’s contact and debris damage by 30% and shortens Frozen by 50% and Chilled by 75% (the shorter debuffs came in 1.4.5.7). It does not reduce Shadow Hand damage. The Hand Warmer gives full Chilled and Frozen immunity, but it only drops from Christmas Presents at about 0.6%, so don’t plan around it. For mobility the wiki’s pick is a Blizzard in a Bottle.
| If you are | Do this | Skip this |
|---|---|---|
| A new player, Classic mode | Skybridge plus bed respawn. It removes Ice Spikes and lets you retry against the same health bar. | Standing above it. Shadow Hands are the one thing you can’t brute-force. |
| A casual player | Legs strategy on one or two platform layers, with Warmth and food. | Fighting at range. The cloak will waste your time. |
| Expert or Master | Warmth, Swiftness and a knockback guard, and weapons with real damage per hit (see below). | Fast, low-damage weapons. Defense hits them hardest. |
Pick a strategy in 20 seconds
- Under 260 health, or no Gold or Platinum armor: don’t fight yet. Finish the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu and come back.
- Shadow Hand knockback keeps launching you into debris: switch to the skybridge.
- Classic mode and you don’t want to build anything: use the Legs strategy.
- Dying with the boss still above half health: set a bed in the arena and keep chipping.
- Dying repeatedly in Expert or Master with weak weapons: farm better damage first, because the defense table below shows how little a 15-damage hit does.
Why weak hits fail: the defense math
Every hit on Deerclops loses 5 damage in Classic, 7.5 in Expert and 10 in Master. The Terraria Wiki defense page gives the formula: net damage = attack damage minus defense times 0.5, 0.75 or 1 by mode, rounded down, with a floor of 1. Deerclops has 10 defense, so the same hit is worth very different amounts.
| Damage per hit | Classic (7,000 HP) | Expert (11,900 HP) | Master (15,172 HP) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 10 net, 700 hits | 7 net, 1,700 hits | 5 net, 3,035 hits |
| 25 | 20 net, 350 hits | 17 net, 700 hits | 15 net, 1,012 hits |
| 40 | 35 net, 200 hits | 32 net, 372 hits | 30 net, 506 hits |
| 60 | 55 net, 128 hits | 52 net, 229 hits | 50 net, 304 hits |
A 15-damage hit loses a third of its value in Classic and two thirds in Master. That is why the Weather Pain stands out: its tooltip says it ignores 10 points of enemy defense, which is exactly Deerclops’s defense. The table ignores the 15% damage variance and crits, and it assumes every hit lands.
Deerclops drops and which to take
The wiki lists 12 gold 50 silver and 5 to 15 Healing Potions as guaranteed drops; the rest is a loot table. The Treasure Bag (Expert and Master) always holds the Bone Helm.
| Item | Rate | What it does | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bone Helm | 100% (bag) | Accessory: homing Shadow Hands, 18 damage, 20 armor penetration, pass through blocks | Take it. Armor penetration beats Deerclops’s defense. |
| Eye Bone | 33% | Summons Chester, a living piggy bank | Handy storage, no combat value. |
| Eyebrella, Radio Thing | 33% each | Vanity items | Cosmetic only. |
| Houndius Shootius | 25% | Sentry, 24 summon damage, a fireball every 1.5 s, no mana | Best pick for summoners. |
| Weather Pain | 25% | Magic wand: homing Hurtnado, 13 damage, ignores 10 defense | Best pick for mages in Expert and Master. |
| Pew-matic Horn | 25% | Gun: turns any bullet into a random item, 20 damage, use time 15 | A fun rematch weapon. |
| Lucy the Axe | 25% | Tool and sword: 150% axe power, 27 damage, short range | Best tree-chopper, mediocre boss weapon. |
| Mask, Trophy | 14.29%, 10% | Vanity and decoration | Collectors only. |
The Pew-matic Horn is the one drop you can run the math on. At 20 damage and four shots a second, if every shot lands, it needs roughly 117 seconds in Classic, 248 in Expert and 379 in Master. Treat that as a rough ceiling, because each shot’s damage varies with the item fired. Even the Master figure is about six minutes of continuous hitting, so uptime inside 30 tiles matters more than weapon choice. Dizzy’s Rare Gecko Chester, at 7.14% from the bag, is the rarest item in the loot table.
Deerclops in Terraria versus Don’t Starve Together
The Terraria boss is an optional fight you start yourself, while the Don’t Starve Together version comes back every winter. The DST Deerclops has 4,000 health, hits players for 75, usually first appears around Day 30 and returns 16.8 winter days after you kill it. Our Don’t Starve Together versus Terraria comparison explains why the two games treat bosses so differently, and the DST Deerclops guide covers the original.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to beat Deerclops to progress in Terraria?
No. The wiki lists it as optional. Fight it for the Bone Helm and a weapon pick, not because the game asks you to, and skip it entirely if you’d rather finish the Dungeon first.
Why can’t I damage Deerclops?
You are more than 30 tiles away. It turns dark purple and takes no damage until you move back inside 30 tiles, so shorten the arena rather than the fight.
Can I fight Deerclops again?
Yes. Craft another Deer Thing, or wait for a midnight Blizzard spawn, which drops to 25% after your first kill. A Deer Thing is more reliable than waiting.
Does hiding behind blocks make Deerclops immune?
The wiki doesn’t say so. It describes the cloak purely in terms of distance, so behind a wall you stay targetable as long as you are within 30 tiles. Debris passes through blocks anyway.
Is the Legs strategy better than the skybridge?
For Classic, yes; it needs no building. For Expert and Master we’d take the skybridge, because it removes Ice Spikes and leaves only Shadow Hands and debris, and the Legs strategy still leaves you exposed to the third spike hit.
