Deerclops DST Guide: How to Summon, Fight and Survive the Winter Boss

If you’ve been playing Don’t Starve Together and suddenly hear something enormous moaning in the darkness, congratulations — Deerclops has picked you. The Winter giant is the first seasonal boss most players encounter, and it has ended more runs than any other creature in the game. It doesn’t just attack you: it targets your base, destroys your Science Machine, and drains your sanity so fast that Shadow Creatures pile on top of the fight.

This guide covers everything — how the spawn system works, exact stats (including a correction to numbers you may have seen elsewhere), what to prepare before Day 30, the safest kiting pattern, and what drops make the fight worth it. Verified against the current DST build, March 2026.

Note: some older guides list 6,250 HP and 300 damage — those figures are from the Terraria version of Deerclops, which is a separate boss with different mechanics. The DST wiki confirms 4,000 HP and 75 damage to players.

What Is Deerclops?

Deerclops is a giant one-eyed deer that spawns automatically every Winter, starting around Day 30. It’s classified as a Seasonal Giant — unlike bosses you can summon at will, Deerclops arrives on the world’s own schedule. You don’t invite it; you survive it.

What makes it genuinely dangerous for new players isn’t raw damage. At 75 damage per hit, a player with decent armour can absorb several hits. The real threats are two layers of chaos working together:

  1. Structure targeting. Deerclops prioritises nearby structures over players. The moment it spawns, it walks directly to your base and begins destroying your Science Machine, Chests, Crock Pots, and anything else it finds. Ignore it and your entire camp gets levelled.
  2. Sanity drain aura. Standing near Deerclops drains your sanity at –400 per minute during combat. Sanity falling below roughly 30% causes Shadow Creatures — Crawling Horrors and Terrors — to spawn and attack simultaneously. Suddenly you’re kiting a boss and fighting shadow monsters at the same time.

Understanding these two mechanics is what separates players who fight Deerclops confidently from those who watch their whole camp collapse.

How Deerclops Spawns — and the Warning You Cannot Miss

Deerclops cannot be actively summoned through normal gameplay. It spawns automatically on Day 30.8 during a default 15-day Winter, appearing approximately 40 tiles away from the nearest surface player. One condition must be met: there need to be at least 5 structures within 20 tiles of that player. If you’re out in the open wilds with no base nearby, Deerclops targets you directly rather than your buildings.

Before it appears visually, you’ll hear it. Characters say things like “That sounded big!” and a deep, resonant moan fills the audio. This is your warning — you have roughly 60 to 90 seconds to prepare. The moment you hear that sound, stop whatever you’re doing and get ready.

Should you fight it or run? Running is an option — if you move far enough away, Deerclops despawns. But it resets and returns the following Winter, potentially as early as Day 16 of the next Winter season. Every year you delay the fight is another year Deerclops shows up. More importantly, running while your base is within target range means watching it demolish everything you built. The fight is almost always the right call.

Once defeated, Deerclops won’t return for the rest of that Winter season, and won’t respawn for approximately 16.8 Winter days after death — giving you significant breathing room to rebuild and progress.

Preparation Checklist — Have This Ready Before Day 30

Don’t wait for the warning sound to gather supplies. Set a mental checkpoint at Day 25: if you don’t have the following, prioritise it before Winter deepens.

  • Thermal Stone (1). You’re going to be outside fighting in Winter. Without warmth management, you’ll take freezing damage on top of everything else.
  • Football Helmet + Log Suit. The helmet reduces damage by 80%, the suit by 80% — stacked, incoming hits drop to a manageable fraction. Bring extras; durability drains fast.
  • Ham Bat (fresh). A fresh Ham Bat deals 59.5 damage per hit, making it the most efficient melee weapon for this fight. At 2–3 hits per window, you’ll kill Deerclops significantly faster than with a basic Spear (roughly 68 hits with Ham Bat versus 118 hits with a Spear).
  • Sanity food (10–20 units). Jerky, Taffy, Mushroom-based dishes — anything that restores sanity. You’ll need it mid-fight to prevent Shadow Creatures from joining the chaos.
  • Healing food (3–4 servings). Cooked Morsels or Dragonpie. Don’t rely on healing during the fight, but have it available for mistakes.
  • Pan Flute or 4 Sleep Darts (optional but powerful). Sleeping Deerclops lets you set up Tooth Traps, land free hits, or give your team time to regroup.

How to Fight Deerclops: The Kiting Method

Kiting is the safest and most reliable approach, and it works the same way whether you’re solo or in a group. The core rhythm is based on Deerclops’s 4-second attack period:

  1. Engage at its side or rear. Never stand directly in front — its freezing cone attack fires forward in a 30-degree arc and can lock you in place.
  2. Watch for the wind-up animation. Deerclops lowers its head and rears back slightly before swinging. This is your signal to stop attacking and start moving.
  3. Strike 2–3 times, then reposition. On grass or normal terrain, 2 hits is the safe window. On cobblestone roads or with a Walking Cane, you can squeeze in 3 hits comfortably. Do not push for 4 — that’s how you eat a hit.
  4. Circle to its flank. Move around to its side as it swings, let the animation complete, then resume attacking.

Sanity management mid-fight. The –400/min drain is fast. In a 3-minute fight you’ll lose 1,200 sanity points — enough to bottom out most characters. Eat a piece of Jerky or Taffy between attack windows to slow the collapse. If you see your screen distorting and shadowy figures appearing, Shadow Creatures have spawned. Deal with them immediately — they have low HP and die in 2–3 hits — then return to Deerclops.

Multiplayer tip. In a group, one player kites while others heal and manage sanity. Deerclops only swings at the player it’s currently targeting. If you’re not the target, you can hit freely. Rotate aggro by having the current target run away briefly while a teammate steps in — Deerclops switches targets and the previous target can recover.

Cheese Strategy: Lead It to the Pig Village

If kiting isn’t your style yet, here’s a legitimate shortcut: find the Pig King’s village before Winter and remember where it is. When Deerclops spawns, lead it to the Pig settlement. Nearby Pigs will aggro onto Deerclops and fight it — they’re surprisingly effective at dealing damage and soaking hits.

Your job becomes kite-lite: keep Deerclops occupied so it doesn’t destroy the Pig houses (which would turn the Pigs hostile toward you), and land hits between its attacks. The Pigs don’t kill it alone, but they cut the fight time significantly and split its attention. Scout the village layout beforehand so you know how much space you have to work with.

What Does Deerclops Drop?

Killing Deerclops yields three things:

  • 8 Meat. Regular Meat, not Monster Meat — clean food for Crock Pot recipes.
  • Deerclops Eyeball. The key crafting ingredient for two high-value structures: the Eyebrella (rain/snow protection umbrella, extremely useful for Spring and Winter travel) and the Houndius Shootius (a turret structure with 1,000 HP that auto-attacks enemies, including future Deerclops visits).
  • Deerclops Figure Sketch. Used to craft a decorative Marble Figure — cosmetic, but a nice trophy for your base.

Wait — Isn’t Deerclops Also in Terraria?

Yes. Deerclops was added to Terraria in version 1.4.3 as a crossover boss from Don’t Starve, appearing during a Blizzard on the surface. The design is clearly the same creature, but the mechanics are completely different — Terraria’s Deerclops has significantly higher HP and different attack patterns tuned for that game’s combat system. That’s where those higher HP/damage numbers you may have seen come from.

If you’re coming from Terraria expecting Deerclops to behave the same way, it won’t. In DST it’s slower, structure-focused, and the sanity drain is the main threat. If you want to take it down in Terraria, we have boss guides there too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you avoid Deerclops entirely?

Yes, but only temporarily. Moving far from your base before it spawns causes it to despawn without engaging. However, it resets the timer and returns next Winter. Every season you avoid it is a season you miss out on the Eyebrella and Houndius Shootius. Running works in a survival pinch; it’s not a long-term strategy.

What happens if Deerclops destroys your base?

It despawns after destroying enough structures — roughly 5 intentionally-targeted buildings. Your items drop on the ground; they’re not gone unless fire gets to them. You can rebuild. The bigger loss is a Crock Pot or Ice Box going down mid-Winter, which disrupts food production at the worst possible time. That’s why engaging it immediately after the warning is almost always better than ignoring it.

Can you fight Deerclops in Summer?

No. Deerclops is a Winter boss and despawns at the onset of Spring if it hasn’t been engaged. You can’t re-trigger it until the following Winter. Some community mods allow off-season spawning, but in the vanilla game it’s Winter-only.

What’s the best weapon to use?

A fresh Ham Bat at 59.5 damage per hit is the most efficient melee option. A Tentacle Spike (52.5 damage) is a solid alternative if you haven’t crafted a Ham Bat yet. The standard Spear (34 damage) works but extends the fight considerably — roughly 118 hits with a Spear versus 68 with a fresh Ham Bat. Under –400/min sanity drain, a longer fight means more Shadow Creature risk, so higher damage output genuinely matters here.

Does Deerclops respawn?

It respawns approximately 16.8 Winter days after being killed — in a default 15-day Winter, it won’t return that season. The following Winter it spawns fresh. Some players use the Houndius Shootius crafted from the Eyeball drop to handle future encounters passively. Each one has 1,000 HP and auto-attacks hostiles, making a cluster of them a solid base defence against repeat visits.
