Terraria has 19 bosses — and unlike most action games, fighting them in the wrong order doesn’t just make things harder. It can lock you out of progression entirely. Miss Skeletron and you can’t enter the Dungeon. Skip the Mechanical Bosses and Plantera won’t spawn. Fight Moon Lord without defeating the Lunatic Cultist first and nothing happens at all.
This guide covers every Terraria boss in order for version 1.4.5 — summoning methods, recommended gear loadouts, key drops, and the exact progression gates each boss unlocks. Whether you’re playing solo or with friends on a fresh world, this is the complete roadmap from King Slime through Moon Lord.

Terraria Boss Philosophy: Why Order Matters
Terraria’s progression system is built around bosses as gatekeepers. Defeating each boss doesn’t just give you loot — it physically changes your world, unlocks new ore veins, enables new NPCs to move in, and triggers world events that open up the next tier of content.
You might also find calamity mod progression helpful here.
Pre-Hardmode is relatively flexible. King Slime, Eye of Cthulhu, Queen Bee, and the Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu can be fought in almost any order, and some are entirely optional. Skeletron and Wall of Flesh are mandatory — skip either and your progression stops dead.
Hardmode is strictly sequential. The Mechanical Bosses must all be defeated before Plantera spawns. Plantera must be defeated before the Temple unlocks for Golem. Golem must fall before the Lunatic Cultist appears. And the four Celestial Pillars must be destroyed to summon Moon Lord. There is no shortcut through the Hardmode wall.
Understanding this structure — and preparing the right gear before each fight — is what separates a smooth playthrough from a wall of frustration.

Pre-Hardmode Bosses in Order
1. King Slime (Optional)
How to summon: Craft a Slime Crown (20 Gold/Platinum Bars + 1 Ruby + 99 Gel at a Demon/Crimson Altar) or kill 150 slimes during a Slime Rain event. Also has a rare chance to spawn in the outer third of the map during the day.
Recommended gear: Iron or Gold armor, a Bow with Frostburn Arrows, or any decent melee weapon from Gold/Platinum tier. King Slime is forgiving — it’s designed as an introduction to boss fights.
Key drops: Slimy Saddle (enables Slime mount, excellent early mobility), Ninja Hood/Shirt/Pants (cosmetic set), Royal Gel accessory (makes slimes friendly). The Slimy Saddle in particular gives you a bouncy movement tool that’s useful throughout Pre-Hardmode.
Why fight King Slime: He’s fast, predictable, and the Slimy Saddle is genuinely useful. Great for warming up before Eye of Cthulhu. Optional but recommended on a first playthrough.
2. Eye of Cthulhu
For a dedicated breakdown of the Eye of Cthulhu fight — arena setup, Phase 2 charge patterns, and class-specific tips — read our full Eye of Cthulhu guide.
How to summon: Craft a Suspicious Looking Eye (6 Lens at a Demon/Crimson Altar). The Eye also spawns automatically after your first night if you’ve consumed 10 or more Life Crystals and have at least 200 HP.
Recommended gear: Gold/Platinum armor, a Bow with Frostburn or Jester’s Arrows, or Minishark if you’ve saved enough coins. Hermes Boots for mobility. The Eye enters a ramming phase at 50% HP — stay mobile.
Key drops: Demonite Ore (Corruption worlds) or Crimtane Ore (Crimson worlds). Both are used to craft Tier 2 armor and tools. Also drops Binoculars (useful for scouting) and the Corrupt/Crimson Seeds for world-seeding cheese strategies.
Why fight Eye of Cthulhu: The ore it drops is a significant damage and defense upgrade. Shadow Armor (Demonite) boosts speed; Crimtane Armor gives the highest Pre-Hardmode melee defense. Either path opens the next tier of progression.
3. Eater of Worlds (Corruption) / Brain of Cthulhu (Crimson)
Your world generates with either the Corruption or Crimson biome — never both. These bosses are world-specific. Fight whichever matches your world.
How to summon: Break 3 Shadow Orbs (Corruption) or 3 Crimson Hearts (Crimson) using a Nightmare Pickaxe, Deathbringer Pickaxe, or Dynamite. Alternatively, craft a Worm Food (Corruption) or Bloody Spine (Crimson) at a Demon/Crimson Altar.
Recommended gear: Demonite or Crimtane armor set from Eye of Cthulhu drops. For Eater of Worlds: fight with AoE weapons — its body segments split on hit. For Brain of Cthulhu: focus on the Creepers first (20 must be killed), then attack the Brain during its second phase when it becomes vulnerable.
Key drops: Shadow Scales (Corruption) or Tissue Samples (Crimson). These are required to craft Nightmare or Deathbringer Pickaxes, which mine Hellstone — mandatory for Wall of Flesh preparation. Also drops more Demonite/Crimtane Ore. The Rotten Chunk (Corruption) and Vertebrae (Crimson) drops are needed for crafting key accessories.
4. Queen Bee (Optional)
How to summon: Destroy a Larva inside a Bee Hive in the Underground Jungle, or craft an Abeemination (5 Honey Blocks + 1 Bottled Honey + 5 Stingers + 1 Hive) and use it inside the Jungle biome.
Recommended gear: Molten Armor (crafted from Hellstone) gives the highest Pre-Hardmode melee damage. A Blade of Grass (dropped in Jungle) or a Phoenix Blaster (Hellstone ranged weapon) makes this fight manageable. A large open arena above the hive helps significantly.
Key drops: Bee Gun (fires homing bees), Bee Keeper (sword that summons bees on hit), Hive Pack (accessory that boosts bee minions and weapons), Honey Comb (accessory that spawns bees when hit), Beeswax (ingredient for Hardmode Queen Bee upgrades). The Hive Pack and Honey Comb together make a powerful early defensive accessory combination. The Witch Doctor NPC also moves in after Queen Bee is defeated.
Why fight Queen Bee: Her accessories are genuinely excellent and carry into early Hardmode. The Witch Doctor NPC sells Wings components and other rare items. This is one of the most rewarding optional Pre-Hardmode bosses.
5. Skeletron (Required)
How to summon: Speak to the Old Man at the Dungeon entrance at night. He transforms into Skeletron. This is the only way to initiate the fight — there is no summoning item. If you attack the Dungeon during the day without defeating Skeletron, the Dungeon Guardian spawns and one-shots you with 9,999 damage.
Recommended gear: Molten Armor with a Fiery Greatsword or Phoenix Blaster. Focus on the hands first — destroying both hands reduces Skeletron’s defense to zero and disables spinning attacks. The head then takes full damage. Create a wide arena with platforms above the Dungeon entrance for easy aerial manoeuvring.
Key drops: Skeletron Hand (flail weapon), Book of Skulls (magic staff). The real reward is Dungeon access: the Dungeon contains Shadow Chests with powerful weapons (Muramasa, Aqua Scepter, Blue Moon, Handgun) and Bone furniture. Dungeon exploration is essential for Pre-Hardmode weapon BiS and for unlocking the full Dungeon loot pool once Hardmode begins.
6. Wall of Flesh (Required — The Hardmode Gate)

How to summon: Drop a Voodoo Doll (dropped by Voodoo Demons in The Underworld) into lava in The Underworld. This kills the Guide NPC and immediately spawns the Wall of Flesh. Warning: this is permanent. Once Wall of Flesh is defeated, your world enters Hardmode and cannot be reversed. Prepare thoroughly before fighting.
Recommended gear: Full Molten Armor, a Minishark or Phoenix Blaster loaded with Meteor Bullets, and a grappling hook for movement. Build a long horizontal platform bridge across The Underworld — the Wall moves continuously and you must kite it across the entire width of the map. Running out of space means death.
Key drops: Pwnhammer (required to break Demon/Crimson Altars in Hardmode, spawning new Hardmode ores), Clockwork Assault Rifle, Breaker Blade, and Hardmode accessories including the Warrior/Ranger/Sorcerer Emblem and Band of Regeneration upgrades. The Emblems are class-defining accessories that boost damage by 15% for their respective class.
What changes in Hardmode: New Hardmode ores spawn (Cobalt/Palladium, Mythril/Orichalcum, Adamantite/Titanium). The Hallow biome spreads. Crimson/Corruption spreads faster. New enemies appear everywhere. Mechanical Bosses begin spawning randomly at night. The entire world becomes significantly more dangerous.
Hardmode Bosses in Order
7. Queen Slime (Optional)
How to summon: Use a Gelatin Crystal (found in the Underground Hallow biome) while standing in the Hallow. The crystal is consumed on use. Queen Slime is the Hardmode equivalent of King Slime — a relatively accessible optional boss that drops useful accessories for Hallow-themed builds.
Recommended gear: Early Hardmode Cobalt or Palladium armor. She flies and spawns slime minions in her second phase — a large open arena helps significantly. Ranged or magic builds perform well here.
Key drops: Gelatinous Pillion mount, Crystal Assassin armor set (excellent for melee/ranged), Blade Staff (summon weapon), and various Hallow-themed accessories. Optional but worth fighting before the Mechanical Bosses.
8–10. The Mechanical Bosses (Any Order, All Required)
All three Mechanical Bosses must be defeated to trigger Plantera’s Bulb growth in the Underground Jungle. They can be fought in any order, but this sequence is recommended by difficulty, easiest to hardest:
We cover this in more depth in terraria world seeds.
The Destroyer (Easiest Mechanical Boss)
The Destroyer is a mechanical version of the Eater of Worlds — a giant worm with 80,000 HP that releases Probes (flying mini-enemies) as it takes damage. The key strategy: fight at night only (it despawns at dawn), build a tall arena, and use the Daedalus Stormbow with Holy Arrows (crafted from Pixie Dust and Unicorn Horn in the Hallow). The Stormbow rains arrows downward and hits the Destroyer’s long body hundreds of times per volley — it is the single most efficient Destroyer strategy in the game.
Key drops: Hallowed Bars (required for Hallowed armor and tools), Mechanical Worm (summons another Destroyer), Soul of Might (crafting ingredient). The Megashark — one of the strongest Pre-Plantera ranged weapons — is crafted from Illegal Gun Parts, a Minishark, 5 Shark Fins, and 20 Souls of Might.
The Twins (Medium Mechanical Boss)
The Twins are two separate bosses: Retinazer (fires lasers) and Spazmatism (charges with cursed fire). They must both be killed before dawn, or they despawn and heal to full. Strategy: focus Retinazer first (lower HP at 20,000 vs Spazmatism’s 23,000), then switch. Use the Megashark (crafted after Destroyer) or a Dart Rifle with Crystal Darts. Build a wide horizontal arena with runway to dodge Spazmatism’s charges in phase two.
Key drops: Hallowed Bars, Souls of Sight, Mechanical Eye. Souls of Sight are required for the Optic Staff (summon weapon with twin minions) and several endgame crafting recipes.
Skeletron Prime (Hardest Mechanical Boss)
Skeletron Prime has 28,000 HP on the head and four arms (each with separate HP pools). Focus the Prime Saw and Prime Vice arms first — they deal the most contact damage. The head’s spinning attack in phase two deals massive damage rapidly. Use the Megashark with Crystal Bullets for the head, or a Daedalus Stormbow with Holy Arrows for clustered hits. Hallowed armor with the Helmet variant (ranged set bonus) is ideal here.
Key drops: Hallowed Bars, Souls of Fright, Mechanical Skull. Souls of Fright contribute to the Flamethrower and other endgame recipes. Defeating all three Mechanical Bosses triggers the message “The jungle grows restless…” — Plantera Bulbs begin spawning in the Underground Jungle.
11. Plantera (Required)
How to summon: Destroy a Plantera’s Bulb — a pink flower that spawns naturally in the Underground Jungle after all three Mechanical Bosses are defeated. Bulbs spawn slowly; exploring the full Underground Jungle is typically required to find one quickly.
Recommended gear: Hallowed armor (full set), Megashark with Crystal Bullets or a magic build using Spell Tome weapons. Build a large circular arena in the Underground Jungle with multiple platform layers. Plantera’s tentacle hooks grab you through blocks in phase two — the arena must be wide to outrange them.
Key drops: Temple Key (unlocks the Jungle Temple for Golem), Pygmy Staff (summon weapon), Venus Magnum (ranged), Grenade Launcher (explosive), The Axe (guitar-axe novelty weapon), Seedling (pet), Plantera Trophy. Critical unlock: Plantera’s death enables Hardmode Dungeon (Dungeon enemies become stronger but drop better loot, including Ectoplasm for Spectre armor), spawns the Tax Collector NPC from a Tortured Soul, and speeds up the Truffle Worm spawn rate in the Glowing Mushroom biome.
For the complete Plantera fight guide — arena setup, both phases, and class-specific strategies — see our Terraria Plantera guide.
12. Golem (Required)
How to summon: Use a Lihzahrd Power Cell at the Lihzahrd Altar inside the Jungle Temple. Power Cells drop from Lihzahrd enemies inside the Temple and from Temple chests. The Temple is unlocked by the Temple Key from Plantera.
Recommended gear: Chlorophyte armor (crafted from Chlorophyte Ore — found only in the Underground Jungle during Hardmode), Megashark or a strong magic weapon. Golem has multiple attack phases: rock fists, eye lasers, and a detached head that bounces around the room. Focus the fists first, then the body. The room is small — mobility accessories are essential.
Key drops: Picksaw (mines Lihzahrd Bricks and all other blocks), Golem Fist (flail), Stynger (explosive ranged), Sun Stone (day accessory), Eye of the Golem (accessory). Critical unlock: Golem’s defeat triggers the Cultists to spawn at the Dungeon entrance, enables the Solar Eclipse event (rare but drops powerful weapons), and allows the Martian Madness event. Duke Fishron is also effectively unlocked now (Truffle Worms available).
13. Empress of Light (Optional)
How to summon: Kill a Prismatic Lacewing butterfly in the Hallow biome at night. Prismatic Lacewings only spawn after Plantera has been defeated. The Empress despawns at dawn — the fight must be completed in a single night.
Key drops: Kaleidoscope (best Pre-Moon Lord summon weapon), Terraprisma (THE strongest summon weapon in the game — but only from the daytime kill challenge), Empress Wings (best wings before Moon Lord), Starlight (melee), Nightglow (magic). The Terraprisma requires killing the Empress entirely in daytime — she one-shots you with any attack in this mode, making it one of the hardest optional challenges in the game.
Why fight Empress of Light: Even without the Terraprisma challenge, her regular drops are among the best gear available before Moon Lord. Summon players especially benefit from the Kaleidoscope.
14. Duke Fishron (Optional)
How to summon: Use a Truffle Worm as bait in the Ocean biome. Truffle Worms are caught in the Glowing Mushroom biome with a Golden Fishing Rod and are rare — budget 15–30 minutes of fishing to acquire one. Duke Fishron can be fought at any point in Hardmode, but his difficulty scales with the player.
Key drops: Tsunami (best Pre-Moon Lord bow), Tempest Staff (summon weapon with powerful Sharknado minion), Fishron Wings (fast, excellent for endgame), Flairon (melee), Razorblade Typhoon (magic). All Duke Fishron drops are tier-defining weapons that perform competitively even against Moon Lord. Many veteran players fight Duke Fishron immediately after Golem to gear up before the Cultist.
15. Lunatic Cultist (Required)
How to summon: Kill the four Cultists standing at the Dungeon entrance after Golem is defeated. The Lunatic Cultist spawns immediately when all four are killed. If you fail the fight, the Cultists respawn after a short time.
Recommended gear: Post-Golem equipment or better. The Lunatic Cultist has 32,000 HP and spawns elemental projectile orbs in groups — only the projectile that matches his current shield pattern can be destroyed. Attack the wrong projectile and it immediately fires back. Watch his eye color to identify the correct target.
Key drops: No exceptional loot, but defeating the Lunatic Cultist triggers the Lunar Events. Four Celestial Pillars spawn across your world (Solar, Vortex, Nebula, Stardust). Each pillar is surrounded by powerful enemies that drop Lunar Fragments — the final crafting tier before Moon Lord gear.
16–19. Celestial Pillars (Required)
The four Celestial Pillars don’t have to be fought in a specific order, but each is associated with a different class:
- Solar Pillar: Melee-focused enemies, drops Solar Fragments for Solar Flare armor and Daybreak/Solar Eruption weapons
- Vortex Pillar: Ranged-focused enemies, drops Vortex Fragments for Vortex armor and Phantasm/Vortex Beater weapons
- Nebula Pillar: Magic-focused enemies, drops Nebula Fragments for Nebula armor and Nebula Blaze/Arcanum weapons
- Stardust Pillar: Summon-focused enemies, drops Stardust Fragments for Stardust armor and Stardust Dragon/Cell Staff weapons
Each Pillar has a 150-kill shield. Kill 150 pillar enemies to remove the shield, then destroy the pillar itself. Destroying all four pillars triggers a 60-second countdown and summons Moon Lord.
20. Moon Lord (Final Boss)
Moon Lord is Terraria’s final boss and has the highest combined HP pool in the game: 145,000 HP across three True Eyes of Cthulhu (45,000 each) and the Moon Lord’s Core (50,000). All True Eyes must be destroyed simultaneously — the Core regenerates HP until the final three eyes are killed together, forcing coordinated DPS rather than sequential targeting.
Recommended gear: Luminite armor (crafted from Moon Lord’s drops), or best-in-slot for your class from Pillar fragments. Fishron Wings or Empress Wings for mobility. The fight has three phases: the outer eyes fire destructible Phantasmal Spheres, the forehead eye fires a Phantasmal Deathray that deals massive damage, and the final Core phase requires sustained DPS before it regenerates.
Strategy tip: Portal Potions, Teleporters, and Mining Potions help you set up a long arena with nurse access mid-fight. Fishing for Life Potions (Greater Restoration) before the fight significantly increases survival margin.
Key drops: Luminite (crafts all four endgame armor sets and tools), Last Prism (fires all-color laser), Meowmere (highest base DPS melee sword), Terrarian (yo-yo with high DPS), Star Wrath (magic), SDMG “Space Dolphin Machine Gun” (ranged), Celebration Mk2 (explosive), Lunar Portal Staff and Rainbow Crystal Staff (summon), Suspicious Looking Tentacle (pet). Moon Lord’s death also allows the Lunar Event to restart by re-killing the Lunatic Cultist — enabling infinite farming of Luminite and Fragment weapons.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct order of bosses in Terraria?
Pre-Hardmode: King Slime (optional) → Eye of Cthulhu → Eater of Worlds or Brain of Cthulhu → Queen Bee (optional) → Skeletron → Wall of Flesh. Hardmode: Queen Slime (optional) → Mechanical Bosses (all three, any order) → Plantera → Golem → Empress of Light (optional) → Duke Fishron (optional) → Lunatic Cultist → Four Celestial Pillars → Moon Lord.
How many bosses are in Terraria 1.4.5?
Terraria 1.4.5 has 19 unique bosses (counting Eater of Worlds and Brain of Cthulhu as one slot since your world has only one). If you count them as separate bosses, the total is 20. The four Celestial Pillars are sometimes counted separately, bringing total unique encounters to 23 depending on how you count.
Which Terraria boss should I fight first?
Eye of Cthulhu is the recommended first boss for most players. King Slime is easier and great for a warm-up, but the Eye’s ore drops are more impactful for progression. Both can be summoned in Pre-Hardmode at any point after collecting 10 Life Crystals.
Do I have to fight all three Mechanical Bosses?
Yes. All three — The Destroyer, The Twins, and Skeletron Prime — must be defeated before Plantera’s Bulbs begin growing in the Underground Jungle. You can fight them in any order, but all three are required to progress.
What is the hardest Terraria boss?
Moon Lord is the hardest required boss. The Empress of Light (daytime kill for the Terraprisma reward) is arguably harder as a challenge fight, since she one-shots the player with every attack during daytime. Duke Fishron is also notoriously punishing for players who face him under-geared.
Can I fight Wall of Flesh without killing Skeletron?
Technically yes — Wall of Flesh’s summoning only requires the Voodoo Doll and lava in The Underworld. But skipping Skeletron means skipping the Dungeon entirely, which costs you significant Pre-Hardmode weapons and the Muramasa (needed for Night’s Edge). Skeletron first is strongly recommended.
