Reach 8 hearts with your chosen candidate by giving gifts (up to two per week) and talking to them daily.
Buy a Bouquet (200g) from Pierre’s General Store and give it to them at 8 hearts. This starts your dating relationship and unlocks the path to 14 hearts.
Reach 10 hearts while dating. Without the bouquet, friendship caps at 8 hearts for marriage candidates.
Upgrade your farmhouse at least once (10,000g + 450 Wood from Robin). This adds a kitchen and a double bed — a prerequisite for marriage.
Buy the Mermaid’s Pendant (5,000g) from the Old Mariner, who appears on the beach’s eastern tide pools on rainy days. In Winter, you’ll need a Rain Totem to make him appear.
Give the pendant to your partner to propose. The wedding ceremony happens 3 days later.

Reaching 14 Hearts

After marriage your friendship cap rises from 10 to 14 hearts. At 12.5 hearts your spouse gives you a Stardrop, which permanently increases your maximum energy — one of only a handful in the game. Keep giving gifts and talking daily to push toward this milestone.

The Jealousy System

If you give non-hated gifts to other marriage candidates of the same gender as your spouse, there’s a 20–40% chance (based on daily luck) your spouse becomes jealous. This causes a 30-point friendship penalty and angry dialogue. Birthday gifts and delivery quest items are exempt. To avoid jealousy entirely, stick to giving non-candidate villagers gifts, or give your usual candidates items they hate.

Children

After reaching a certain heart level and upgrading the farmhouse a second time (which adds a crib), your spouse will ask if you want children. You can have up to two children, who grow from baby to toddler over several weeks. Children don’t affect gameplay mechanics but are part of the full family storyline.

Divorce

Divorce is available at Mayor Lewis’s manor for 50,000g. Your ex-spouse’s friendship resets to 0, they move back to their original home, refuse gifts, and show negative dialogue. Your children remain on the farm. If you want to remarry them, visit the Witch’s Hut shrine (30,000g + Prismatic Shard) to erase their memories — otherwise, their unique heart events won’t replay.

Gift on birthdays: Birthday gifts give 8× the normal friendship boost. Check the calendar in Pierre’s shop for all birthday dates.
Talk every day: Daily conversation gives a small friendship bump — don’t skip it even on busy days.
Two gifts per week maximum: Any gifts beyond two per week give no friendship points. Space them out.
Watch for rainy days: The Old Mariner only appears on rainy days. Check the forecast before using a Rain Totem.
