Getting married in Stardew Valley is one of the most rewarding long-term goals in the game. Your spouse moves onto the farm, helps with chores, gives you gifts, and adds a personalised room to your farmhouse. The first time I finally proposed to Abigail after two full in-game years of gift-giving, it genuinely felt earned. This guide covers everything — from the first bouquet to post-wedding mechanics — so you can pursue romance efficiently.
How Romance Works: The Path to Marriage
Marriage in Stardew Valley follows a clear progression gated by friendship hearts. Here is the full step-by-step path:
- Reach 8 hearts with your chosen candidate by giving gifts (up to two per week) and talking to them daily.
- Buy a Bouquet (200g) from Pierre’s General Store and give it to them at 8 hearts. This starts your dating relationship and unlocks the path to 14 hearts.
- Reach 10 hearts while dating. Without the bouquet, friendship caps at 8 hearts for marriage candidates.
- Upgrade your farmhouse at least once (10,000g + 450 Wood from Robin). This adds a kitchen and a double bed — a prerequisite for marriage.
- Buy the Mermaid’s Pendant (5,000g) from the Old Mariner, who appears on the beach’s eastern tide pools on rainy days. In Winter, you’ll need a Rain Totem to make him appear.
- Give the pendant to your partner to propose. The wedding ceremony happens 3 days later.
Once married, your spouse moves onto the farm, your friendship can grow to 14 hearts, and you unlock a daily kiss that removes all exhaustion — incredibly useful for long mining or farming days.
All 12 Marriage Candidates: Overview & Best Gifts

| Leah | Artistic, outdoorsy, independent | Goat Cheese, Poppyseed Muffin, Salad, Truffle, Wine |
| Maru | Scientifically gifted, inventive | Battery Pack, Cauliflower, Cheese Cauliflower, Diamond, Gold Bar |

Tip: Universal loved gifts (Prismatic Shard, Pearl, Rabbit’s Foot, Magic Rock Candy) work on almost everyone, but they’re rare and expensive. Stick to character-specific gifts for the most efficient heart gains early on.
Top Marriage Candidates In Depth
While every candidate is a valid choice, these four are consistently popular picks — each offering unique spouse perks, memorable heart events, and practical farm benefits.
Abigail — The Adventurer
Abigail is the candidate for players who love the combat and mining side of Stardew. Her heart events are some of the most entertaining in the game: you play co-op Journey of the Prairie King together at 2 hearts, she practices swordplay in the graveyard at 6 hearts, and her 10-heart event in the mines is genuinely touching.
Best gifts: Amethyst (easy to mine from early geodes), Pumpkin (grow in Fall), Chocolate Cake (cooking unlock), Spicy Eel.
As a spouse: Abigail sets up a practice space behind the farmhouse and plays flute outside. On rainy and indoor days she gives you useful items including bombs — a real bonus if you’re actively mining. Her spouse room features occult decorations matching her personality.
Emily — The Gem Enthusiast
Emily is ideal for players who mine regularly, since her loved gifts (gemstones) are natural byproducts of mining anyway. Her heart events are visually striking — a dream sequence, a parrot adoption, and a Secret Woods camping trip round out a memorable romance arc.
Best gifts: Any gemstone (Amethyst, Aquamarine, Emerald, Ruby, Topaz, Jade), Cloth, Wool. If you have a loom running, Cloth is practically free to produce.
As a spouse: Emily brings cloth, wool, duck feathers, and refined quartz as gifts — genuinely useful crafting materials. She creates a meditation crystal garden behind the farmhouse, and her adopted parrot becomes part of the household. Her generosity with cloth makes her especially valuable for players unlocking the sewing machine recipes.
Penny — The Bookworm
Penny has some of the most emotionally resonant heart events in the game. Her difficult home situation with Pam adds genuine depth, and her 14-heart event lets you redecorate the bedroom together — a detail that makes the relationship feel collaborative. She’s the candidate who most explicitly wants to start a family, which aligns well with pursuing the parenting storyline.
Best gifts: Melon (easy Summer crop), Poppyseed Muffin (cooking), Diamond, Red Plate, Tom Kha Soup. Notably she dislikes alcohol, so avoid Beer or Wine.
As a spouse: Penny prepares breakfast most mornings and brings practical rainy-day gifts like seeds, eggs, and milk. Her spouse room is a cosy library with bookshelves. She frequently mentions her mother and expresses contentment about farm life — her dialogue post-marriage is warm and character-consistent.
Harvey — The Doctor
Harvey is underrated. His 8-heart event — revealing a secret passion for aviation his eyesight prevented him from pursuing — is one of the most poignant in the game. His 10-heart hot air balloon ride, where he pushes through genuine fear of heights for you, is a standout moment. He’s a mature, grounded candidate who feels like a real partner.
Best gifts: Coffee (easy to buy from the Travelling Merchant or grow), Pickles (any vegetable in a Preserves Jar), Truffle Oil, Wine. He’s one of the easier candidates to gift efficiently once you have a Preserves Jar running.
As a spouse: Harvey prepares a Complete Breakfast on indoor days (a high-energy meal with useful buffs) and brings fish dishes on rainy nights. He continues working at the clinic on Tuesdays and Thursdays. His spouse room is filled with model planes and aviation memorabilia — a touching nod to his unrealised dream.
Spouse Perks and House Upgrades
Every spouse shares a core set of daily behaviours once they move in:
- Crop watering: Your spouse will water your crops in Spring, Summer, and Fall — not all of them, but a portion, saving stamina.
- Animal care: They feed barn and coop animals and fill the pet water bowl.
- Fence repair: Occasionally repairs broken fence segments around the farm.
- Daily gifts: Most spouses give food or useful items 3–4 times per week, varying by weather and their schedule.
- Morning kiss: Your first interaction each day with your spouse removes all stamina exhaustion — this alone makes marriage extremely practical.
Spouse rooms appear automatically after the wedding, added to the right of the bedroom. Each room is unique to the character and reflects their personality — Abigail’s is occult-themed, Emily’s features crystals, Harvey’s has model aircraft. These rooms cannot be customised (except Penny’s 14-heart event bedroom redecoration).
The second farmhouse upgrade (65,000g + 100 Hardwood from Robin) expands the house further, giving more interior space. The third upgrade adds a cellar with casks for ageing wine and cheese — great for the money making guide strategies if you’re building a high-value goods operation.
To afford the Mermaid’s Pendant (5,000g), the house upgrade (10,000g), and ideally the second upgrade (65,000g) without straining your first-year budget, prioritise the crops and income strategies in our money making guide.
Post-Marriage Mechanics
Reaching 14 Hearts
After marriage your friendship cap rises from 10 to 14 hearts. At 12.5 hearts your spouse gives you a Stardrop, which permanently increases your maximum energy — one of only a handful in the game. Keep giving gifts and talking daily to push toward this milestone.
The Jealousy System
If you give non-hated gifts to other marriage candidates of the same gender as your spouse, there’s a 20–40% chance (based on daily luck) your spouse becomes jealous. This causes a 30-point friendship penalty and angry dialogue. Birthday gifts and delivery quest items are exempt. To avoid jealousy entirely, stick to giving non-candidate villagers gifts, or give your usual candidates items they hate.
Children
After reaching a certain heart level and upgrading the farmhouse a second time (which adds a crib), your spouse will ask if you want children. You can have up to two children, who grow from baby to toddler over several weeks. Children don’t affect gameplay mechanics but are part of the full family storyline.
Divorce
Divorce is available at Mayor Lewis’s manor for 50,000g. Your ex-spouse’s friendship resets to 0, they move back to their original home, refuse gifts, and show negative dialogue. Your children remain on the farm. If you want to remarry them, visit the Witch’s Hut shrine (30,000g + Prismatic Shard) to erase their memories — otherwise, their unique heart events won’t replay.
Romance Tips for Efficiency
- Gift on birthdays: Birthday gifts give 8× the normal friendship boost. Check the calendar in Pierre’s shop for all birthday dates.
- Talk every day: Daily conversation gives a small friendship bump — don’t skip it even on busy days.
- Two gifts per week maximum: Any gifts beyond two per week give no friendship points. Space them out.
- Watch for rainy days: The Old Mariner only appears on rainy days. Check the forecast before using a Rain Totem.
- Start Year 1: You can begin building hearts from Day 1. By the end of Year 1 it’s realistic to be at 8–10 hearts with focused effort — see our first year walkthrough for a full Year 1 strategy.
- Prioritise loved gifts over liked gifts: Loved gifts give 80 friendship points vs 45 for liked — nearly double. Always use a loved gift when possible.
Marriage is one of the most satisfying long-term arcs in Stardew Valley. Combined with completing the Community Center bundles and building a productive farm, it ties together everything the game rewards patient, consistent play for. Pick a candidate whose personality resonates with you — every romance arc has genuinely good writing — and enjoy the journey.
