Penking gets lumped in with Palworld’s nine Syndicate Tower Bosses in a lot of guides, and that mix-up matters: those fights got a hard 5-minute clock in the 1.0 update, and if you walk into the Sealed Realm of the Frozen Wings expecting the same pressure, you’ll fight tighter than you need to. Penking is a Field Alpha Boss, not a Tower Boss — different system, no timer, and the 1.0 rebalance barely touched it. Verified on Patch 1.0 (July 10, 2026).
This guide covers the actual fight, then the part most Penking guides skip entirely: whether the Pal is worth the base slot once you’ve caught it, with its Watering, Cooling, and Mining levels checked against the two Pals players actually swap it out for — Tombat and Jormuntide, plus a way to skip the fight altogether if you just want the Pal for your base roster. Brand new to Palworld? Our Palworld beginner’s guide covers what to prioritize before you’re ready for a level-15 dungeon.

Where to Find Penking (and Why There’s No Timer)
Penking’s dungeon sits at roughly (114, -352), with a fast-travel point close enough that you’re on top of it within seconds once it’s unlocked [1][2]. The confusion with Tower Bosses is worth clearing up before you go in: Palworld 1.0 cut every Tower Boss’s fight window from 10 minutes to 5 and rebalanced their stats to match [1]. Sealed Realm Alpha bosses like Penking run on the older, timer-free system — you can pace the fight, kite around pillars, and reposition as long as you want. If a guide tells you to rush Penking before a clock runs out, it’s describing a different fight.
Penking Boss Fight Strategy
Bring an Electric-type Pal if you have one — Water takes bonus damage from Electric, and Ice takes bonus damage from Fire, so either covers Penking’s dual typing [2][5]. A ranged weapon matters more here than in most Alpha fights, because Penking doesn’t come alone. Whatever you’re carrying, aim for gear roughly matched to a level-15 assault rifle or a mid-tier bow — Penking’s Iceberg and Aqua Burst hit hard enough at that level that anything weaker turns the fight into a war of attrition against the respawning Pengullets rather than a clean kill.
- Kill the Pengullets first. The Level 11 Pengullets in the arena chip damage from range while you’re focused on the boss — clear them before committing to Penking, not after [4].
- Read Iceberg before it lands. The spike is ground-marked before it erupts, so watch the floor, not Penking, in the half-second before it fires [2][4].
- Angle away from Emperor Slide instead of just backpedaling. It’s a leap-and-slide charge, and community reports consistently note it’s easier to sidestep than to outrun in a straight line — give yourself an angle, not just distance [2][4].
- Use the arena pillars. They block both the Pengullets’ projectiles and Penking’s charge, and they’re the single easiest way to buy a breather mid-fight [4].
When not to attempt it: under level 12 with no ranged weapon, you’re relying entirely on your Pal to solo the adds while you eat chip damage — level up or bring backup first.
Once its HP drops low, you can throw a Pal Sphere instead of finishing it off, and the kill still counts toward the encounter [4]. If you only want the plume and the schematic roll, killing is faster and you can wait out the one-hour respawn (or sleep to skip it) [5] for another attempt at the Pal Sphere later. If you want it in your party or on your bench for breeding, don’t risk the throw on a fight you can’t repeat easily — get its HP as low as you safely can before you start throwing.
Don’t Want to Fight? Catch or Hatch Penking Instead
The Sealed Realm isn’t the only route in, and if your actual goal is stocking a base with workers rather than a rare schematic drop, it’s often not the fastest one either. Penking has a separate wild spawn density in Windswept Hills at a lower level than the dungeon Alpha, so a good Pal Sphere throw on an open-world encounter can skip the fight entirely [11]. It also hatches from a Large Damp Egg, and breeds from several parent combinations — Cinnamoth x Surfent and Eikthyrdeer x Cryolinx both produce it [11]. That breeding route matters if you’re chasing the Work Suitability rank-up bonus from the previous section: it’s far faster to hatch three or four Penkings from eggs than to farm the boss’s one-hour respawn timer three or four times over. See our full Palworld breeding guide for the complete parent-combination list and how stat inheritance works.
Penking’s Work Suitability, Explained
Penking’s base-work numbers are why people bother catching it at all: Watering Lv2, Cooling Lv2, Handiwork Lv2, Mining Lv3, and Transporting Lv3, with everything else at zero [2][3]. That’s five active jobs on one Pal slot — most mid-game Pals cover one or two. One source disagrees on the last two: XGamingServer’s database lists Mining and Transporting at Lv2 instead of Lv3 [9]. Two independent wikis (palworld.wiki.gg and paldb.cc) agree on Lv3 for both, so that’s the figure used here — but if your in-game Palbox shows Lv2, trust what you see over any written guide, this one included.
The 1.0 patch changed how those numbers grow, too. Every time you rank up a Pal through Condensing (feeding it duplicates), one of its Work Suitability Levels now increases automatically [1]. A Penking you’ve condensed a couple of times isn’t the same worker as the wild one you just caught — factor that into any comparison you make against a specialist Pal, since the gap narrows the more duplicates you feed it. For how those numbers stack up against the rest of the roster, see our best worker Pals guide.
Penking vs. Tombat vs. Jormuntide vs. Pengullet: Who Gets the Base Slot?
Penking’s real competition isn’t Pengullet — despite looking like a baby version of it, Pengullet isn’t even the same species line, and it’s a bottom-tier worker you replace the moment Penking is caught [10]. The Pals actually fighting Penking for a base slot are Tombat, for Mining and Transporting, and Jormuntide, for Watering.
| Pal | Jobs (Level) | Best for | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Penking | Watering 2, Cooling 2, Handiwork 2, Mining 3, Transporting 3 | You want one Pal covering five stations instead of five separate Pals | You already have dedicated specialists filling every one of those roles |
| Tombat | Mining 3, Transporting 2, Gathering 2 | Pure ore/logistics base with no watering or cooling needs | You’re also running crop plots — Tombat contributes nothing there |
| Jormuntide | Watering 7 (single job) | A large dedicated farm where one Pal needs to outwork three lower-tier waterers | Your base is cramped — its size causes pathing problems around tight layouts [7] |
| Pengullet | Watering 1, Cooling 1 | The first hour of the game, before you’ve reached Penking’s dungeon | You’ve already caught Penking — there’s no scenario where Pengullet is still the better pick |
Tombat matches Penking’s Mining level exactly (Lv3) but does nothing for Watering or Cooling, so on a base with any crop plots or cooling stations, Penking pulls ahead on raw coverage even though its Mining and Transporting cap out identically. Jormuntide’s Watering 7 crushes Penking’s Watering 2 on paper, but it’s a one-trick Pal in a slot that could otherwise cover four other jobs — and multiple lower-tier waterers can already match it for less base-layout hassle [7]. If you’re building your first proper base and don’t have five specialist Pals yet, Penking is the more efficient starting worker. If you’ve already got a mature Mining or Watering operation staffed, adding Penking on top is redundant instead of an upgrade. Either way, group its five work stations close together when you place them — see our Palworld base building guide for layout tips, since a scattered base wastes exactly the versatility that makes Penking worth catching.
Which Player Type Should Prioritize Penking?
| Player type | Priority |
|---|---|
| New player | Catch it as soon as you hit level 15 — it’s the single best early return on one Pal Sphere for base coverage |
| Casual player | Kill for the plume unless you specifically need a fifth base worker; the fight is fast and doesn’t need repeat visits |
| Hardcore / optimizer | Condense duplicates to push its Work Suitability past the base Lv2/Lv3 spread, then compare it against your existing specialists role by role |
| Completionist | Farm the 1-hour respawn for the low-odds Feathered Hair Band Schematic; everything else drops on the first kill |
FAQ
Is Penking a Tower Boss?
No — it’s a Field Alpha Boss inside a Sealed Realm dungeon. That distinction isn’t just trivia: Tower Bosses got a 5-minute timer and a full stat rebalance in Patch 1.0, and Penking’s fight didn’t [1]. Treat any guide that mentions a time limit on Penking as describing the wrong boss.
Should I use Penking or Tombat for mining?
Both hit Mining Lv3, so it comes down to what else your base needs. Tombat only mines and transports; Penking does that plus Watering and Cooling. Unless your base is mining-only, Penking is the better use of the slot because Tombat’s extra capacity goes to waste [6][8].
Does Penking evolve from Pengullet?
No, despite the visual similarity they’re unrelated species [10]. Pengullet is a weak early-game placeholder; Penking is a separate, stronger Pal you have to go catch on its own.
What’s the best element to bring into the fight?
Electric. Penking’s Water typing takes bonus damage from Electric attacks, and its secondary Ice typing is also weak to Fire — either works, but Electric Pals are generally easier to catch by the time you’re pushing level 15 content [2][5].
Is Penking worth using in combat, or just for base work?
Base work is where it earns its keep. Its Shot Attack and Defense sit at a respectable 95 each, but Penking doesn’t bring a standout offensive Partner Skill to back that up — Brave Sailor only boosts item drops from Fire Pals, which does nothing for you mid-fight. Catch it for the five work jobs, not the moveset. If you want a Pal built for damage instead, check our Palworld tier list.
