If you’re searching for a Lagiacrus Thunder Sac in Monster Hunter Wilds, you won’t find it — that material doesn’t exist in this game. The equivalent electrical conductor is called the Lagiacrus Shockspike, and understanding that distinction is the first step to farming this monster efficiently.
This guide covers every Lagiacrus material drop rate in MHW Wilds, compares carving against capture rewards method by method, and shows the fastest route to the rarest drop: the Lagiacrus Sapphire.
Quick Reference: All Lagiacrus Materials in MHW Wilds
Seven materials drop from Lagiacrus in MHW Wilds. Five accumulate naturally. Two require deliberate farming.
| Material | Primary Use | Rarity |
|---|---|---|
| Lagiacrus Hide+ | Armor and weapons | Common |
| Lagiacrus Scale+ | Armor and charms | Common |
| Lagiacrus Claw+ | Weapons | Common |
| Lagiacrus Shockspike | Armor and weapons | Uncommon |
| Lagiacrus Horn+ | Weapons | Uncommon |
| Lagiacrus Tail | Weapons | Uncommon (sever required) |
| Lagiacrus Sapphire | End-game weapons and armor | Rare (2% carve) |
Where to Hunt Lagiacrus in Monster Hunter Wilds
Lagiacrus is High Rank only — no Low Rank version exists in MHW Wilds. Capcom added it in Free Title Update 2 (June 30, 2025). It appears in two locations, and knowing which to target shapes your farming strategy.
Wounded Hollow (HR 100+). This is the primary farming location. Tempered Lagiacrus spawns here after reaching Hunter Rank 100. If you’re pushing for the Sapphire, Tempered variants carry slightly better gem rates — and the Wyverian Bloodstone drops from Tempered wounds are worth farming at the same time.
Scarlet Forest (weather-dependent). Lagiacrus spawns here during Inclemency weather in the morning. From base camp, rest at the Iceshard Cliffs campsite and advance time until conditions align. Useful for variety or if Wounded Hollow spawns are contested. The complete Lagiacrus hunting guide covers spawn manipulation in more detail.
Unlock quests:
- “Tremors on Land, Sea, and Forest” — 6★ Assignment (main unlock)
- “The Sea-Born Lord” — 6★ Optional quest
- “Trembling Blue Currents” — Extra Mission (unlocks Scarlet Forest spawn)
Full Drop Table: Carve, Capture, and Target Rewards
Most guides list body carve rates and stop there. The separate broken-part and target reward pools change your approach entirely — two of the seven materials are easier to get from deliberate part breaks than from carving.
Body Carving (kill, 3 carves):
| Material | Drop Rate |
|---|---|
| Lagiacrus Hide+ | 23% |
| Lagiacrus Scale+ | 22% |
| Lagiacrus Claw+ | 18% |
| Lagiacrus Shockspike | 13% |
| Lagiacrus Horn+ | 11% |
| Lagiacrus Tail | 11% |
| Lagiacrus Sapphire | 2% |
Severed Tail Carving: Lagiacrus Tail — 100%. Always sever the tail. It adds a free carve that doesn’t compete with the body carve pool.
Broken Part Rewards (guaranteed per break):
| Part Broken | Material | Drop Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Back (dorsal spines) | Lagiacrus Shockspike | 100% |
| Head | Lagiacrus Horn+ | 100% |
| Forelegs | Lagiacrus Claw+ | 100% |
Wound Destroyed Rewards: Hide+ (50%), Scale+ (50%). Good for bulk common materials but not the farming focus.
Target Rewards (quest completion):
| Material | Drop Rate |
|---|---|
| Lagiacrus Claw+ | 27% |
| Lagiacrus Hide+ | 25% |
| Lagiacrus Certificate S | 8% |
| Lagiacrus Sapphire | 100%* |
*The 100% Sapphire target reward appears on investigation quests that list the Sapphire as a guaranteed reward slot — not on standard story or optional quests. These investigations appear at the Quest Counter after hunts. When one shows up, prioritise it. Source: Kiranico [1], Game8 [2][3].
What Happened to the Thunder Sac?
If you played Monster Hunter World, Rise, or older entries, Thunder Sac was a standard electrical organ shared across multiple leviathan-type monsters. In MHW Wilds, Capcom replaced those universal sac materials with monster-specific parts.
Lagiacrus’s electrical conductor is now the Lagiacrus Shockspike — the segmented spines along its back ridge that it uses to release (not generate) electricity. Functionally it fills the same crafting role that Thunder Sac did in older titles. Any guide or forum post telling you to farm “Thunder Sac” from Lagiacrus in Wilds is carrying over advice from a different game.
The practical upside: Shockspike is much easier to farm than Thunder Sac ever was. Breaking the dorsal spines guarantees a Shockspike drop — you’re not relying on the 13% carve rate.

How to Farm Lagiacrus Shockspike
The back break is your only guaranteed Shockspike source. Destroy the dorsal spine cluster and one Shockspike drops — no RNG required once the part breaks. Combined with body carves at 13%, a single hunt reliably produces one to two Shockspikes.
Step-by-step back break:
- Enter Focus mode (L2/LT) and aim at the raised spine cluster on Lagiacrus’s back
- Deal enough damage to create a wound (glowing wound marker appears)
- Use a Focus Strike to detonate the wound — this deals extra damage and often triggers the break
- If the back doesn’t break from one wound, repeat; Lagiacrus creates wound opportunities during lightning-spine attacks when grounded
Severing the tail on the same hunt adds a free Lagiacrus Tail carve without competing against Shockspike. Aim for back break first, then switch targeting to the tail before it flees to a lair.
For bulk Shockspike farming, run Lagiacrus investigations and break the back each hunt. In practice, two to three hunts covers most weapon crafting requirements — the back reliably breaks by the time Lagiacrus retreats to its lair for the first time. See the Lagiacrus armor and weapons guide for the full crafting list.
Lagiacrus Sapphire: Every Farming Method Ranked
The Sapphire is the bottleneck. At 2% on body carves, you need roughly 17 hunts for one Sapphire from carving alone — using the formula 100 ÷ (1 − 0.98³) per hunt at three carves each. Here’s the correct priority order.
1. Investigation quests with guaranteed Sapphire reward (fastest)
When an investigation appears at the Quest Counter with the Lagiacrus Sapphire listed as a target reward, complete it. The Sapphire is guaranteed — 0% RNG. These investigations refresh after each Lagiacrus hunt, so run regularly hunts to cycle new investigations into the pool. This is community consensus across Game8 and Fextralife [3][4].
2. Tempered Lagiacrus carving (HR 100+)
Tempered variants in Wounded Hollow have a marginally improved Sapphire drop rate versus standard High Rank. More importantly, you’re already farming here for Wyverian Bloodstone drops from Tempered wounds — so Sapphire attempts are effectively free. Don’t delay reaching HR 100 if you need the gem.
3. Lucky Vouchers + Capture Pro Meal
A Lucky Voucher doubles quest item rewards. Combined with the Capture Pro Meal from the canteen (grants up to four carve-equivalent rewards on a capture), you can effectively run four body-pool attempts per hunt instead of three. Use this combination on any non-investigation Lagiacrus run. Lucky Voucher sourcing is covered in the MHW Wilds crafting progression guide.
Capture vs. Carve: Which Method Actually Wins?
In MHW Wilds, capturing Lagiacrus pulls from the same body carve pool as killing it — capturing gives no statistical edge for Sapphire odds on its own. This differs from MH: World, where captures used a separate and often favourable reward table. In Wilds, that distinction was removed.
Capture wins in two specific scenarios:
- Capture Pro Meal is active. This canteen buff grants up to four body-pool rewards from a capture instead of the standard three. That extra reward slot meaningfully improves your per-hunt Sapphire chances.
- You don’t need the tail. If your tail stock is full, capture (which skips the tail-sever carve) is faster — fewer animations, shorter hunt, more runs per hour.
The correct default: kill and sever the tail for maximum carves when farming generally. Capture with Capture Pro Meal when specifically pushing for the Sapphire.
| Player Type | Recommended Approach |
|---|---|
| New to Lagiacrus | Run story quests, break back and tail each hunt to learn the fight and bank common materials |
| Casual — need parts fast | Break back (guaranteed Shockspike), sever tail, check Quest Counter after each hunt for Sapphire investigations |
| Optimiser | Run Tempered in Wounded Hollow, always use Lucky Voucher + Capture Pro Meal, run investigations whenever a Sapphire slot appears |
| Completionist | Complete all three unlock quests, collect each of the seven materials, craft every weapon in the Lagiacrus tree |
What to Craft with Lagiacrus Materials
Lagiacrus materials unlock 13 weapons across all weapon types plus the Lagiacrus armor set, which carries the Leviathan’s Fury set bonus (Azure Bolt: 15% affinity proc on Mighty Charge). The Lagiacrus Sapphire is required for:
- End-tree upgrades across all 13 Lagiacrus weapon lines
- Lagiacrus Braces and Lagiacrus Greaves (armor)
- Friendship Charm V and Foray Charm III
For where Lagiacrus weapons sit in the current MHW Wilds weapon rankings, the best solo weapons guide breaks down the tier list by weapon type. The Lagiacrus sword-and-shield and dual blade variants are particularly competitive against thunder-weak targets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Lagiacrus drop a Plate or Webbing in MHW Wilds?
No. There’s no Lagiacrus Plate or Webbing in this title — those appeared in older Monster Hunter entries. The full material list is the seven items in the quick reference table above.
Is the Lagiacrus Sapphire the same as a Gemstone?
It’s the same concept — a rare large-format gem material. In MHW Wilds, Capcom shifted to sapphire naming for Lagiacrus specifically instead of the gemstone convention used for other monsters. Functionally it serves the same role: the bottleneck material for high-tier Lagiacrus gear.
Do any skills or decorations increase Lagiacrus material drop rates?
No skill or decoration directly raises drop rates in MHW Wilds. Lucky Vouchers and the Capture Pro Meal food buff are the only legitimate multipliers for per-hunt rewards. Decorations affect damage output, which lets you run more hunts per session — see the decoration farming guide for maximising your build efficiency.
