If you played the first Hades, you probably came here looking for the magic mirror in Zagreus’s room — the one where you spent Darkness on permanent upgrades. That system doesn’t exist in Hades 2. Melinoë never finds a Mirror of Night. What she gets instead, lent to her by Hecate, is the Arcana Cards system: a 5×5 grid of Tarot-style cards at the Altar of Ashes, activated with a resource called Grasp. The Hades Wiki calls it exactly what it is — “the spiritual successor to the Mirror of Night” — same job, completely different mechanics[1].
That’s actually good news for anyone building a run around a specific goal. The Mirror of Night let you toggle between two fixed upgrade paths per slot. Grasp forces real trade-offs: you’ll unlock more cards than you can ever run at once, so every point you spend is a point you’re not spending somewhere else. This guide covers exactly how to spend it — one full build for maximum DPS, one for pure survival, the order to unlock cards in either direction, and a data problem almost every other Hades 2 guide has right now without knowing it. Verified on Hades 2 Post-Launch Patch 2, Hotfix 5 (July 2026)[6] — values may change with future patches, so double-check at the Altar of Ashes in-game.
Quick Start: Your First 8 Steps
- Unlock The Sorceress (1 Ash, 1 Grasp) first. It’s the cheapest card in the grid and useful in every build.
- Unlock The Wayward Son (3 Ash, 1 Grasp) next — passive healing with zero build requirements.
- Decide now: DPS or Survival. That choice determines every unlock after this point.
- DPS path: save Ash for Origination (35 Ash) and Night (35 Ash).
- Survival path: save Ash for Death (25 Ash) and Strength (40 Ash).
- Spend your first 135 Psyche to raise your Grasp cap from 10 to 16 — both full builds below land at exactly 15 Grasp.
- Save your finished build into one of the Altar’s six preset loadout slots so you can swap without rebuilding mid-run.
- Re-check the numbers in-game before committing — Hades 2 has quietly changed several of these values since launch (see the mistakes section below).
How Grasp and Psyche Actually Work
Every Arcana Card has a Grasp cost from 0 to 5. You start each run with a 10-point Grasp cap, and the full 25-card grid adds up to 56 Grasp worth of cards — more than five times your starting budget[1]. Cards costing 0 Grasp (The Moon, The Centaur, The Queen, The Fates, Divinity, Judgment) don’t activate normally at all; each needs a specific “Awakening” condition met instead, like keeping every column of the grid active or ending a fight against a Guardian.

Raising your Grasp cap costs Psyche, earned from shades and encounters, spent at the Altar of Ashes. The cost curve is steep and not linear — it jumps in 2-point increments up to Grasp 20, then 1 point at a time after that[1]:
| Grasp Cap | Psyche to Reach It (Cumulative from 10) |
|---|---|
| 12 | 30 |
| 16 | 135 |
| 20 | 355 |
| 25 | 1,155 |
| 30 (max) | 2,595 + 2 rare reagents |
That last jump matters: going from 29 to 30 alone costs 500 Psyche plus two additional reagents — more than the entire climb from 10 to 25 combined. Unless you’re deep into repeat runs, aim for 16-20 Grasp and stop chasing the last few points; the return on investment falls off a cliff past 25. For a full ranking of individual cards by value-per-Grasp-point, our Arcana Cards value guide covers that layer in more depth — this guide focuses on building two complete, opposite loadouts around it.
One more distinction worth separating out: unlocking a card and activating it are two different resources entirely. Ashes remove a card from the locked grid permanently — that progress never resets. Grasp is what lets you actually run an unlocked card during a given attempt, and it’s the part you’re constantly juggling. You can unlock every card in the grid long before you have the Grasp to run more than a handful of them at once, which is exactly why the six preset loadout slots at the Altar matter — save a DPS preset and a Survival preset separately once you’ve built both below, and you can swap your entire loadout before a run starts instead of manually toggling a dozen cards each time.
The Fourth Rank Most Guides Still Don’t Show You
Here’s something worth knowing before you trust any Arcana number you read online, including elsewhere on this site: Hades 2 added a fourth upgrade rank to every Arcana Card at some point after most existing guides were written, and the jump from rank 3 to rank 4 isn’t small. Cross-checking the current in-game text against half a dozen published guides turned up the same gap repeatedly[1][5]:
- Origination: commonly quoted at “up to +50% damage.” The real cap is +63%.
- Death: commonly quoted at “up to 3 extra Death Defiances.” The real cap is 4.
- Strength: commonly quoted at “-40% damage taken.” The real cap is -45%.
- Persistence: commonly quoted at “+40 HP and Magick.” The real cap is +50 each.
- The Sorceress: commonly quoted at “30% faster Omega Moves.” The real cap is 35%.
None of these are wrong, exactly — they were accurate for the build that existed when those guides were published. But if you’re planning a Grasp budget around a card’s ceiling, the numbers below use the current, fourth-rank values, sourced directly from the in-game card text as of this guide’s verification date.
The DPS-Max Build: 15 Grasp for Maximum Damage
This build assumes a dual-curse setup — pairing curse-inflicting boons from two different Olympians, like Ares plus Poseidon or Demeter plus Hestia. Check our Hades 2 god boon tier list for which curse pairs are currently strongest before you commit Grasp here.
| Card | Grasp | Effect at Max Rank |
|---|---|---|
| The Sorceress | 1 | Omega Moves 35% faster — more casts per fight, more Origination procs |
| Origination | 5 | +63% damage to foes cursed by 2+ different Olympians |
| Night | 2 | +18% Critical chance on Omega combo hits |
| The Furies | 2 | +35% damage to foes caught in your Casts |
| Excellence | 5 | +60% chance your Boon offers include Legendary or Rare blessings |
That’s 15 Grasp exactly, with Origination doing the heavy lifting. The mechanism matters here: Origination only triggers once a target carries curses from two different gods, not two curses from the same god[1] — stacking Demeter’s Freeze twice doesn’t count. Sequence your fights so the curse lands before you commit your Omega combo, and Night’s crit chance compounds on top of an already-boosted hit. Excellence isn’t direct damage, but a 60% shot at Legendary or Rare blessings every Boon offer accelerates how fast your active kit reaches its own damage ceiling, which compounds with everything above it.
The Survival-Floor Build: 15 Grasp for Staying Alive
| Card | Grasp | Effect at Max Rank |
|---|---|---|
| Death | 4 | +4 Death Defiance (extra chances to survive a killing blow) |
| Strength | 4 | -45% damage taken / +20% damage dealt while you have zero Death Defiance |
| Persistence | 2 | +50 Max HP and +50 Max Magick |
| The Wayward Son | 1 | Restore 6 HP after exiting every Location |
| The Lovers | 3 | Take 0 damage on the first 4 hits per Guardian Encounter |
Death and Strength are built to hand off to each other, not stack together — Strength’s damage reduction only activates once you have zero Death Defiance remaining[1], meaning it’s inactive for most of a clean run and switches on right when Death’s safety net runs dry. That’s the actual design: Death buys you four extra mistakes early and mid-run; Strength turns your last stretch, once those mistakes are spent, into a tankier fight instead of a fragile one. Persistence and Wayward Son raise the floor underneath both phases, and The Lovers exists specifically to no-sell the opening flurry of a Guardian fight — the moment most survival builds actually lose runs.

Unlock Order: What to Grab First, Whichever Build You Choose
Both builds share the same cheap opening — The Sorceress and The Wayward Son cost 4 Ash and 2 Grasp combined, and both are useful regardless of which build you’re working toward. After that, the path splits:
- Going DPS? Unlock Night (35 Ash) before Origination (35 Ash) — Night’s crit chance is useful the moment you have any Omega combo going, while Origination sits dead until you’ve also built a dual-curse boon loadout. Add Excellence (40 Ash) and The Furies (3 Ash) once your curse pairing is confirmed.
- Going Survival? Unlock Death (25 Ash) before Strength (40 Ash) — Death is useful from the first run you equip it, while Strength does nothing until you’ve burned through your Death Defiances, which won’t happen consistently until you’re several rooms deep. Add Persistence (10 Ash) early since it’s cheap and always active, then The Lovers (40 Ash) once you’re regularly reaching Guardian fights.
Either way, don’t unlock past what your current Grasp cap supports. Unlocking with Ash and activating with Grasp are separate steps — a card sitting unlocked but inactive because you’re out of Grasp is wasted Ash you could have spent on something you can actually run.
Which Build Fits Your Playstyle
| Player Type | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New player | Survival-Floor, stop at Death + Wayward Son + Persistence (7 Grasp) | Extra Death Defiances forgive mistakes while you’re still learning enemy patterns — the DPS build offers no such cushion |
| Casual player | Survival-Floor, full 15 Grasp build | Consistent clears matter more than fast clears when you’re not running the same biome ten times a night |
| Hardcore / optimizer | DPS-Max, full 15 Grasp build, push toward 20 Grasp for a 6th card | Origination’s damage ceiling only pays off with a deliberately built dual-curse loadout — worth the setup cost if you’re already min-maxing boons |
| Completionist | Unlock all 25 cards regardless of Grasp, activate whichever fits the run | Ash unlocks are permanent account progress; you don’t need the Grasp to spend it, so there’s no reason to leave cards locked |
Two Data Problems to Watch For in Other Guides
Beyond the fourth-rank gap above, two more specific errors are actively circulating:
The “Titan” rename. Several currently-published guides still refer to the card at grid position VII as “The Titan”[7]. That card was renamed to Persistence at some point after early access — same Prometheus artwork, same effect, different name. If you’re cross-referencing a guide that mentions “The Titan” next to The Unseen and Eternity on the grid, you’re looking at Persistence under its old name, not a missing card.
The Grasp cap ceiling. Guides verified against Hades 2’s original 1.0 release list the maximum Grasp cap as 29. As of the current patch, it’s 30 — Supergiant added a final, expensive tier (500 Psyche plus two additional reagents) after launch[1]. If a build guide’s math assumes a 29-point ceiling, its endgame Grasp numbers are one patch behind.
FAQ
Why doesn’t Hades 2 have a Mirror of Night?
Because Melinoë isn’t Zagreus, and the game deliberately avoided reusing the first game’s exact meta-progression system. Grasp cards are the mechanical equivalent — permanent power you build between runs — but the cap-and-cost design forces choices the old toggle-based Mirror never did. If you’re comparing the two systems directly, our Hades 2 vs Hades 1 breakdown covers the wider set of changes.
Should I max my Grasp cap before finishing a build?
No. The Psyche cost curve gets brutal past 20 Grasp, and both builds above are complete, functional loadouts at 15. Push toward 20 only once you’re specifically trying to run a sixth card on top of a build you’ve already confirmed works — chasing 25-30 Grasp for its own sake burns Psyche you could spend on Ash-adjacent progression instead.
Can I run a hybrid of both builds?
You can, but the math argues against it early on. Both full builds land at exactly 15 Grasp; splitting the difference gets you a half-strength version of each without the payoff of either — Origination without enough crit/damage support to matter, or Death without Strength to carry you once the Defiances run out. Commit to one path until your Grasp cap comfortably clears 20, then start blending.
Does Origination work with any two curses, or does it need to be from different gods specifically?
Specifically different gods. The card’s text requires curses “from different Olympians”[1] — two applications of the same god’s curse, even from different boons, won’t trigger the bonus. This is the single most common reason players report Origination “not doing anything.”
