Valheim Ashlands Guide: Barley Wine Won’t Stop Lava, and Boiling Water Sinks Your Longship

Fire Resistance Barley Wine will not save you from lava. The Valheim Wiki says lava deals “a high amount of true damage on contact” regardless of resistances, and the potion only halves the fire that keeps burning you afterwards. The thing that sinks a Longship on the way in isn’t fire either: it’s the boiling Ashlands sea, which hits any ordinary boat for 1 to 30 blunt damage a second.

The Ashlands is Valheim’s seventh biome of eight, added in patch 0.218.15 on 14 May 2024, with Deep North now sitting after it since the 1.0 release. The three Ashlands guides we checked (HostedGG, XGamingServer, Timesaver) all say to bring fire resistance and build a Drakkar, but none gives ship-damage numbers and none states that lava contact damage ignores fire resistance. This guide does: how far a Longship gets before it sinks, what each defence actually stops, and a landing routine. Verified against the Valheim Wiki’s 28 September 2026 Ashlands revision and patch notes through 1.0.14 (17 September 2026).

Quick Start: 7 Steps Before You Leave Dock

  1. Build the Drakkar first. It costs 100 Iron Nails, 30 Ceramic Plates, 50 Finewood and 25 Yggdrasil Wood. Don’t test the Longship on the Ashlands sea; it won’t come back.
  2. Upgrade your Mistlands gear fully. You can’t wear Flametal until you’ve mined its ore on the island, so the first landing happens in your old kit.
  3. Brew at least one batch of Fire Resistance Barley Wine. One batch is 6 bottles; each lasts 10 minutes.
  4. Carry portal and base materials plus a Workbench. Your first job on shore is a walled pocket with a portal in it.
  5. Don’t stop to fight in open water. A Bonemaw serpent is a rare spawn, but its fireballs carry 40 blunt, 20 fire and 20 poison damage each.
  6. Never walk into lava “because you drank the potion.” Cross it on Basalt Bomb platforms or a tamed Asksvin.
  7. Drink barley wine before the fight or the fire, not after. Resistance isn’t applied retroactively to a burn already ticking.

What Actually Sinks a Longship (It Isn’t Fire)

The Ashlands sea sinks wooden boats by blunt damage, not by burning them. The Valheim Wiki lists 1 to 30 blunt damage per second to a boat in Ashlands water, reaching the 30 per second maximum from 300 m inside the ocean. A Longship has 1,000 HP, so a Longship that stops 300 m or more in is gone in about 33 seconds. The Drakkar has 3,000 durability and is the only boat immune to boiling water.

The Longship’s fire weakness (it takes ×1.5 fire damage, against the Drakkar’s ×0.25) is a second problem, not the main one.

The wiki gives the two ends of the damage range and the 300 m point, but not the curve between them. Assuming it climbs in a straight line, here is how far each Longship setup gets before the hull is gone. These are our arithmetic from the wiki’s speeds, not measured in-game figures, and they ignore waves, steering and repairs.

Longship conditionSpeed (wiki)Time to reach 300 m inHull gone after about
Full sail, 100% tailwind9.35 m/s32 s457 m
Weak wind (5%)5.02 m/s60 s312 m
Paddling, no wind3.16 m/s95 s246 m (sinks before reaching the 30/s zone)
Drakkar, any condition8.62 m/s (full sail, tailwind)n/aNo boiling-water damage

The takeaway: even a perfect tailwind buys a Longship under half a kilometre of boiling sea, and the crossing is usually longer than that. The Drakkar isn’t faster, either. Its top speed with a full tailwind is 8.62 m/s against the Longship’s 9.35 m/s. What you pay 100 Iron Nails and 25 Yggdrasil Wood for is immunity to the water and 32 storage slots (the Longship has 18).

Boiling Ashlands water deals 1 to 30 blunt damage per second to a Longship; the Drakkar is the only boat immune to it.

Do you need to beat The Queen to build a Drakkar?

Sources disagree, so decide with the recipe in hand. The wiki’s Ashlands page, XGamingServer and Timesaver all say the Drakkar comes after you defeat The Queen. The Drakkar and Yggdrasil Wood pages list no boss requirement. The real gate is the 25 Yggdrasil Wood, which only comes from Yggdrasil Shoots in the Mistlands and needs a Black Metal Axe or better. For most players the two gates collapse into one, because the Queen is the Mistlands boss. Our Mistlands guide covers the gear for that fight.

What about swimming?

Don’t. A player in boiling water builds up heat, and at the threshold takes 50 pure damage per second. The wiki puts the swimming limit at 28 seconds. Standing in shallow boiling water gives 42 to 84 seconds depending on where in the biome you are, and the heat dissipates in under 0.7 seconds once you’re out. If the hull is going, swim for the nearest shore at once.

What does Bonemaw add?

Bonemaw has 1,100 HP and spawns only in the Ashlands ocean, as a rare spawn with a limit of one. It spits three fireballs every 20 seconds when you’re 10 to 30 m away (40 blunt, 20 fire and 20 poison each, applying Burning and Poison) and bites for 140 slash inside 3 m. It is immune to fire and weak to frost (×1.5). The wiki doesn’t document it attacking ships, so treat HostedGG’s “assume you will lose the boat” as caution rather than data. Its fireballs travel at 20 m/s.

The Lava Rule: Fire Resistance Does Not Make Lava Safe

Lava’s contact damage ignores damage resistances. The Valheim Wiki describes it as true damage that can kill a high-health player in one or two seconds, and its Resistance page adds that stacking fire resistance “does not make you able to swim on lava like Minecraft.” What fire resistance does cut is the afterburn: you stay on fire after leaving the lava, and that part is reduced.

Flametal armor is the other half of the rule. Its heat resistance is a separate stat from fire resistance, and the wiki says the chestplate and greaves reduce lava damage and extend swim time in boiling water. A full set gives +40% heat resistance (+20% on each of those two pieces). The wiki’s own example for boiling water is that 40% turns 50 damage per second into 30 and stretches the time before damage starts by about 66%.

Players describe the effect as survival time, not immunity. A Steam post from July 2024 says the set took lava “from instadeath to 2ish seconds”. That is one person’s report, not a tested figure, and patch 0.218.21 (27 August 2024) later changed lava damage to depend on how deep into the lava you are and raised the damage threshold slightly. Treat “one or two seconds” as a ceiling for how long you have, not a plan.

In short: the potion is for things that burn you, the armor is for things that boil or melt you, and neither is for the lava itself.

How to cross lava without touching it

The Basalt Bomb is the standard answer. It crafts at a Workbench from 1 Asksvin Hide, 1 Asksvin Bladder and 3 Proustite Powder for 5 bombs. Thrown into lava it makes a small platform that floats for 30 seconds and then sinks slowly, so one bomb buys you roughly 30 seconds of footing. A tamed Asksvin can also carry you across. Buildings follow their own rule: only Flametal structures can go anywhere on lava, and everything else needs at least 2 m of clearance from the surface or it burns. If you die in lava your tombstone lands on top of the lava, which is a good reason to keep your valuables out of the first crossing.

Fire Resistance Barley Wine: Recipe, Numbers and What It Halves

Fire Resistance Barley Wine gives “Resistant vs. Fire”, meaning you take 50% of incoming fire damage, for 600 seconds (10 minutes). You make the base in a Mead Ketill from 10 Barley and 10 Cloudberries, then ferment it for two in-game days to get 6 bottles. The wiki lists a 10-minute cooldown and stacks of 10, and files it as a Plains-tier drink. One third-party wiki entry adds Honey to the recipe; the Valheim Wiki doesn’t, so check the recipe in your own Mead Ketill before you farm.

Fire Resistance Barley Wine needs 10 Barley and 10 Cloudberries per base and halves fire damage for 10 minutes.

The “halves” is the ceiling, not the typical case. The wiki’s Resistance page gives a range of 25% to 50% damage taken for “Resistant” once armor is counted, and 6.25% to 25% for “Very resistant”, which is what the Drakkar has against fire (×0.25).

Why Fader still hurts with the potion on

Fader’s Fissure attack deals 120 fire, 80 spirit, 40 chop and 40 pickaxe damage. Halving the fire part leaves 60 fire plus the same 160 of everything else, about a 21% cut to the raw hit before armor (our arithmetic). The wiki says Fissure can kill a player in seconds even with full Flametal and an active barley wine, and that it can’t be dodged or blocked. Fader has 25,000 HP, is immune to fire and spirit, and takes ×0.5 from pierce, so bring blunt or slash.

To summon him you place three Bells around the coliseum altar, and each Bell needs three Bell Fragments from Charred Fortresses, so nine fragments in total. When not to go: if you don’t have Flametal armor and a spare stack of barley wine, the fight is mostly a waiting game for Fissure. That is our judgment, not a wiki rule.

Landing and Base: Cinder Rain, Wood Fires and the Shield Generator

Build in stone and put a Shield Generator over anything you care about. Cinder rain destroys structures in the Ashlands, and wooden build pieces can catch fire and spread it. The Shield Generator costs 5 Iron, 5 Copper and 1 Shield Core at a Workbench, covers a 30 m sphere, blocks cinders and the lava balls thrown from nearby lakes, and burns one fuel (Bone Fragments or Charred Bone, up to 10 held) per 500 damage it absorbs.

The sensible landing is a small raised pocket: pickaxe an earth wall, drop a portal and a Workbench inside it, and only then explore. The wiki confirms stone portals become available early and can carry metals such as Flametal Ore, so you never have to sail ore back across the boiling sea. Our building guide has the stability numbers for stone and iron if you plan a permanent outpost.

Decision tree for the first hour:

  • If the hull is losing HP steadily with no enemy in sight, it’s the water and you’re not on a Drakkar: turn back.
  • If you reach a beach, you’re on a Drakkar: land, wall in, portal out.
  • If you see a lava river between you and an ore vein, you need Basalt Bombs, not more potions.
  • If enemies are firing at you, drink barley wine and break line of sight with earth walls.
  • If you’ve died near lava, don’t run back unprotected: your tombstone is on the lava surface, so plan a bomb route first.

Which Setup Fits Your Playstyle?

If you are…Do thisSkip this
New to the late gameBuild the Drakkar, land, wall in a portal, and stop there for a session. Mine only what you can reach from the beach.Don’t attempt the lava fields or a Fortress on your first trip
Casual, short sessionsMake a portal-and-Workbench pocket the first goal; brew two batches (12 bottles) so you never wait on fermentationDon’t farm Flametal before your base is shielded
Hardcore or optimiserCraft Flametal at quality 4 (132 armor, still only +40% heat) and treat barley wine as a Fader fight consumableDon’t count the potion as lava protection
CompletionistCollect every Ashlands material first: Ashwood, Grausten, Sulfur, Charred Bone, Molten Core, Asksvin partsDon’t leave Charred Fortress loot for last; its Bell Fragments gate Fader

Version Note and Where This Fits

Verified on 8 October 2026 against patch notes through 1.0.14, the latest Ashlands-related entry we found. The numbers come from the Valheim Wiki’s Ashlands, Lava, Drakkar, Longship, Flametal Armor and Fader pages (Ashlands revision 28 September 2026). The 1.0.14 patch fixed “Ashlands water (VFX, water damage not stopping)”, so older complaints about boat damage that never stopped may predate it. If you play with mods, disable any that alter biome, ship or damage values before comparing against these figures; our best Valheim mods list flags which ones are 1.0 compatible. If you’re weighing Valheim’s prep-heavy progression against a more combat-driven survival game, our V Rising vs Valheim comparison breaks it down on six axes. When you’re done here, the Deep North guide is the next biome.

FAQ

Does fire resistance protect you from lava in Valheim?

No. Lava contact damage ignores damage resistances, so Fire Resistance Barley Wine does nothing to the initial hit. It does halve the burning that continues after you leave the lava. Flametal’s heat resistance is the stat that reduces lava damage.

How do you get to the Ashlands in Valheim?

Build a Drakkar and sail south of the Mistlands. Ordinary wooden boats take boiling-water damage and sink, and the Drakkar is the only boat immune to it. The practical requirement is 25 Yggdrasil Wood from the Mistlands.

Can a Longship cross the Ashlands sea?

Only for a short distance. A 1,000 HP Longship takes up to 30 blunt damage per second, so under perfect wind we estimate about 457 m before it sinks, and far less in weak wind or when paddling. That is why the Drakkar is not optional.

Is Flametal armor worth the movement penalty?

Yes for lava work and boiling water, because nothing else reduces heat damage. The full set costs 10% movement speed (5% each on the chestplate and greaves) and still leaves you with only 40% heat resistance, so it makes lava survivable for a few seconds, not safe.
