The short version: the Abandoned Deck removes all 12 face cards and starts you on 40 cards, Ace through 10 in each suit. It does not make flushes easier. In an 8-card opening hand a flush is slightly less likely (5.8% vs 7.0%). What gets likelier is everything built on rank: straights go from 9.8% to 17.3%, three of a kind or better from 12.0% to 19.9%, and four of a kind more than doubles, from 0.34% to 0.77%. The price is 11 Jokers that stop doing anything, and one Uncommon, Pareidolia, that wakes 9 of them back up.
The odds are our own exact count (method below), not a wiki figure. Deck and Joker facts come from the community-maintained Balatro Wiki. Checked 8 October 2026 against build 1.0.1o: the wiki’s version history lists it as the latest live build, and Balatro HQ confirms that update 1.1 has not shipped. If 1.1 lands, re-check the Joker rows.
Quick start: six rules for an Abandoned Deck run
- Unlock it by winning one run with the Green Deck on any stake. The Green Deck itself needs 75 collection items discovered.
- Build for straights, pairs and three or four of a kind, not flushes. Our beginner guide steers first runs toward a flush build. On this deck that advice flips.
- Skip the face-card Jokers (Scary Face, Smiley Face, Photograph, Business Card, Reserved Parking, Midas Mask, Faceless Joker, Sock and Buskin) unless you also own Pareidolia.
- Take rank-triggered Jokers (Odd Todd, Even Steven, Fibonacci, Hack, Scholar, Walkie Talkie). Each fires on 30% more of your cards than it would in a 52-card deck.
- Skip Blue Joker, and remember Erosion pays nothing until you thin below 40 cards.
- Watch for face cards sneaking back in. Strength can turn a 10 into a Jack and Familiar hands you three. Add them on purpose or not at all.
How to unlock the Abandoned Deck, and what it actually changes
Win a run with the Green Deck on any difficulty. According to the wiki’s deck list, the Green Deck pays $2 per unused hand and $1 per unused discard at the end of each round but earns no interest, and it unlocks once you have discovered 75 items in your collection.
The Abandoned Deck’s only effect is “Start run with no Face Cards in your deck.” Jacks, Queens and Kings go; four suits of ten ranks remain, 40 cards in total. The wiki lists it as the lowest starting card count of any non-challenge deck. You are dealt a default hand of 8 cards, which is the hand size the odds below assume.
What 40 cards does to your odds
Cutting face cards changes ranks, not suits, so every hand that depends on matching or consecutive ranks gets likelier and the flush is the only common hand that loses. The table counts every possible 8-card opening hand from each deck.
| Opening 8-card hand contains | 52-card deck | Abandoned (40) | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| A pair or better (2+ of a rank) | 88.8% | 96.2% | +7.4 points |
| Three of a kind or better | 12.0% | 19.9% | +66% |
| Four of a kind | 0.34% | 0.77% | 2.3× |
| A Straight | 9.8% | 17.3% | +76% |
| A Flush (5+ of one suit) | 7.0% | 5.8% | −16% |
Method: exact count over all possible 8-card hands, no Jokers, no enhancements. It models the opening deal only; discards change the numbers a little but not their direction.
Why flushes slip. Each suit is still exactly 25% of the deck (10 of 40, 13 of 52), so there is no gain to find. The small drop comes from sampling: eight cards from a smaller pool make lopsided suit counts a touch rarer. It shows up in the draw too. Hold four of a suit, throw four other cards, and you complete the flush 58.4% of the time on 40 cards versus 61.4% on 52, because you already hold 4 of the suit’s 10 cards instead of 4 of 13.
Why everything else climbs. Thirteen ranks become ten, so each rank is 4 of 40 cards (10%) instead of 4 of 52 (7.7%). Pairs, trips and quads all pile up faster. Straights are the surprise: there are only 6 possible runs (Ace-to-5 up to 6-to-10, because Aces play high or low but never both and 10-J-Q-K-A cannot exist) against 10 in a full deck. They still get likelier, because five consecutive ranks out of ten is a far bigger share of the ladder than five out of thirteen, and eight cards cover most of it. A Straight is also a cheap swap: it scores a base 30 chips × 4 against 35 × 4 for a Flush, so you give up five chips.
The one real cost is chips. Per the wiki’s rank table, Aces give 11 chips, 2 through 10 give face value and Jacks, Queens and Kings give 10. Losing the 10-chip face cards drops the average card from 7.3 to 6.5 base chips, about 11% less per scored card. That is why early Antes can feel thin. Our deck-building mistakes list calls 52-plus cards deck bloat and recommends trimming to 30–40; this deck starts at the top of that range.
The 11 Jokers that go dead on the Abandoned Deck
Every Joker that pays for face cards does nothing here, because there are none to play, hold, discard or destroy. The right-hand column shows the fix: nine of the eleven wake up under Pareidolia, and the two that need actual Kings or Queens never will.

| Joker | What it needs (wiki text) | Revived by Pareidolia? |
|---|---|---|
| Scary Face | Played face cards give +30 Chips | Yes |
| Smiley Face | Played face cards give +5 Mult | Yes |
| Photograph | First played face card gives X2 Mult | Yes |
| Business Card | Played face cards: 1 in 2 chance of $2 | Yes |
| Reserved Parking | Each face card held in hand: 1 in 2 chance of $1 | Yes |
| Midas Mask | Played face cards become Gold cards | Yes |
| Sock and Buskin | Retriggers all played face cards | Yes |
| Faceless Joker | Earn $5 if 3 or more face cards are discarded at once | Yes |
| Canio (Legendary) | Gains X1 Mult whenever a face card is destroyed | Yes: any destroyed playing card counts |
| Triboulet (Legendary) | Played Kings and Queens each give X2 Mult | No: needs real Kings and Queens |
| Shoot the Moon | Each Queen held in hand gives +13 Mult | No: needs real Queens |
Effect text is from the wiki’s Joker list. Our Jokers ranked guide builds its strongest combo around Photograph and Sock and Buskin, praises Triboulet, and lists Ride the Bus as a Joker that sabotages runs. That ranking assumes a full 52-card deck. On this one the verdicts invert.
Weaker, not dead. Blue Joker gives +2 Chips per card left in the deck, so it opens at +80 here instead of +104. Erosion adds +4 Mult for each card below the deck’s starting size, which is 40 on this deck, so it pays nothing until your first removal. Thin to 25 cards and it gives +60 Mult instead of the +108 it would give a 52-card deck.
One free pass. The Plant (all face cards debuffed, from Ante 4) and The Mark (all face cards drawn face down, from Ante 2) have nothing to hit, per the wiki’s blind list. Two boss effects that wreck other decks do nothing here.
Pareidolia: revives 9 Jokers and breaks 3 things
Pareidolia ($5, Uncommon) makes every card count as a face card, so Scary Face and Smiley Face suddenly fire on every scored card. Per the wiki’s Pareidolia page, cards keep their original rank, suit and chip value, which is why Triboulet and Shoot the Moon stay dead. Canio is the sleeper: with Pareidolia any destroyed playing card feeds it, though Jokers or consumables destroyed by Madness, Popcorn or Ceremonial Dagger do not.
What it breaks:
- Ride the Bus resets to +0 Mult on every hand, because every hand now contains a face card.
- The Plant now debuffs every card. The wiki calls this an almost guaranteed run-ender unless you reroll the Boss Blind.
- The Mark flips every card face down, and selling Pareidolia mid-blind does not flip the non-face cards back.
Our call (judgement, not a tested rule):
- Holding Ride the Bus and no face-card payoff? Pass on Pareidolia. Ride the Bus only resets on a scoring face card, so it keeps climbing until you add face cards yourself.
- Offered Pareidolia with zero or one face-card payoff Joker? Pass.
- Own two or more (Photograph plus Smiley Face, say)? Take it, sell Ride the Bus, and have a plan for The Plant before Ante 4.
The Jokers that get better: every rank trigger fires 30% more often
A rank-based Joker fires on a fixed set of ranks. Drop the deck from 13 ranks to 10 and each rank becomes 1.3 times as common (13 ÷ 10), so every trigger rate below rises by the same 30%.
| Joker | Triggers on | Share of cards, 52-card deck | Share, Abandoned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Odd Todd | A, 9, 7, 5, 3 | 38.5% | 50.0% |
| Even Steven | 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 | 38.5% | 50.0% |
| Fibonacci | A, 2, 3, 5, 8 | 38.5% | 50.0% |
| Hack | 2, 3, 4, 5 (retrigger) | 30.8% | 40.0% |
| Walkie Talkie | 10 and 4 | 15.4% | 20.0% |
| Scholar | Aces | 7.7% | 10.0% |
| Wee Joker | 2s | 7.7% | 10.0% |
Odd Todd and Even Steven are the clearest case. Between them they cover every card in this deck (five odd ranks, five even ranks), which a 52-card deck can never do because Jacks, Queens and Kings count for neither.
For straight builds, three Jokers stand out: The Order (X3 Mult if the hand contains a Straight; Rare), Shortcut (Straights with gaps of one rank) and Superposition (a Tarot when the hand holds an Ace and a Straight). The Order unlocks by winning a run without playing a Straight, so you may meet it on another deck first. Ride the Bus, gaining +1 Mult per consecutive hand without a scoring face card, is the cheap anchor ($6, Common); our Gold Stake guide makes the same pairing call.
Three builds that fit this deck
| If you are… | Build | Anchor Jokers | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A new player | Pairs and three of a kind | Jolly Joker, Zany Joker, Odd Todd or Even Steven | Face-card Jokers in the shop look strong and do nothing |
| A casual player | Straights | The Order, Shortcut, Superposition, Ride the Bus | Runs top out at 6-7-8-9-10; there is no 10-J-Q-K-A |
| An optimiser | Rank-stacked four of a kind | Hack, Fibonacci, Walkie Talkie, plus Cryptid or Incantation | Strength and Familiar quietly add face cards |

Four of a kind scores a base 60 chips × 7 and shows up in 0.77% of opening hands here, 2.3 times the 52-card rate. You can raise that yourself: Cryptid creates two copies of a selected card, and Incantation destroys one random card in hand and adds four random Enhanced numbered cards, while Grim adds two Enhanced Aces (both per the wiki’s Spectral list). Those are the deck-friendly consumables.
Where face cards leak back in. Per the wiki’s Tarot list, Strength increases the rank of up to two selected cards by 1, so a 10 becomes a Jack. Familiar destroys a card in hand and adds three random Enhanced face cards. Either can be right if you own Pareidolia or a face-card payoff; otherwise they undo the deck.
Thinning is cheaper here, because each removed card is 2.5% of the deck instead of 1.9%. The deck-thinning rules in our advanced strategy guide still apply, with one twist: its flush example thins toward a single suit, which is exactly what this deck does not do. Thin by rank instead.
FAQ
How do you unlock the Abandoned Deck in Balatro?
Win a run with the Green Deck on any stake. The Green Deck unlocks after you discover 75 collection items.
Does the Abandoned Deck make flushes easier?
No. Each suit stays at 25% of the deck, and an 8-card opening hand holds a flush 5.8% of the time versus 7.0% on 52 cards. Straights, pairs and four of a kind get easier instead.
Do any face cards appear in the Abandoned Deck?
Not at the start. They only arrive if you add them, for example with Familiar or by using Strength on a 10.
Is the Abandoned Deck good for beginners?
Yes if you build pairs or straights, no if you chase flushes or face-card Jokers. Matching ranks are likelier and two boss effects (The Plant, The Mark) do nothing.
What is the best Joker for the Abandoned Deck?
There is no single best one. Ride the Bus is the cheapest anchor, The Order is the strongest for straights, and Odd Todd plus Even Steven cover the whole deck between them.
Verified 8 October 2026 against build 1.0.1o. Joker values come from a community wiki and may shift if update 1.1 changes them.
