Terraria drops you into a world with a sword, a pickaxe, and almost no explanation. 1. Right-Click the Guide NPC to Look Up Any Recipe
The Guide NPC standing in your starting town is Terraria’s built-in wiki. Right-clicking him opens a recipe lookup: drop any item into the slot and he tells you every recipe that uses it, or every item you can craft from the materials you currently hold. New players routinely spend hours on external wikis searching for crafting chains that the Guide would have answered in seconds. He is the single most useful NPC in the game, and the majority of players never interact with him after the first five minutes.
2. Build NPC Houses Near Biome Edges and Use Pylons
Once you have multiple NPCs housed, position them in pairs near key biomes — forest, snow, desert, underground, ocean, jungle, and hallow. Each pair of happy NPCs (see tip 8 for happiness rules) sells you a Pylon, a teleportation device you place in their biome. Connect enough Pylons and you can fast-travel across the entire map instantly. This system transforms the late game and turns your scattered base network into a functional transit system that makes exploration and farming dramatically faster.
3. Unlock the Torch God’s Favor for a Permanent Luck Bonus
Place 100 or more torches in underground areas of your world, then stay underground until the Torch God event triggers — a brief shower of fireballs that you must dodge. Survive it and you permanently unlock the Torch God’s Favor: a passive +10% luck bonus and improved natural lighting around your character, active for the rest of your playthrough. Luck in Terraria affects drop rates, fishing power, and critical hit chance, making this the cheapest permanent stat upgrade available. It costs nothing but torches and 90 seconds of dodging.
4. Hold Left or Right While Placing a Torch to Mount It on a Wall
By default, torches placed in open air sit on the floor, which means they roll around and are harder to use when lighting tunnels. Holding the directional key (left or right) while placing a torch mounts it on the nearest wall instead. Wall-mounted torches cast more useful light in horizontal corridors and cave systems and behave identically to floor torches in terms of brightness and biome-specific effects. This works with candles and lanterns too. Knowing this saves dozens of wasted torches across a full playthrough.
5. Fishing Is the Fastest Route to Several Key Early Items
Terraria’s fishing system is almost entirely unexplained at the start. Craft a Fishing Pole from five iron or lead bars, then fish in any body of water that is at least 300 tiles wide. Fishing unlocks the Crimson Rod weapon from Crimson biome crates, the Blood Rain Bow from Blood Moon fishing events, and — most importantly — the Reaver Shark pickaxe from ocean fishing. The Reaver Shark is one of the most powerful pre-Hardmode shortcuts in the entire game and is covered in the next tip. Patience while fishing pays off far more than grinding enemies for the same gear.
6. The Reaver Shark Pickaxe Skips You to Hardmode Mining Tier
The Reaver Shark is a pickaxe obtainable only by fishing in the ocean biome, with roughly a 1-in-30 chance from ocean crates. It has 59% pickaxe power — high enough to mine Titanium and Adamantite ores, which are Hardmode-tier materials that normally require a Hardmode pickaxe to obtain. You cannot mine Hardmode ore veins until Hardmode is active (they do not spawn until you defeat the Wall of Flesh), but having the Reaver Shark ready means you can immediately begin mining them the moment Hardmode starts. This gives pre-Hardmode players a substantial head start on the gear curve.
7. Stack Buff Potions — Minimum Three for Every Boss Fight
Buff potions stack freely with each other and with your armor stats. The difference between fighting a boss with three active buffs versus none is roughly equivalent to wearing a full tier of better armor — for free. The minimum stack for any boss fight is Ironskin (+8 defense), Regeneration (passive HP regen), and Swiftness (+25% movement speed). For harder encounters, add Endurance, Lifeforce, Wrath or Rage depending on your damage type, and Summoning if you use minions. Each potion costs almost nothing to craft from common ingredients. Once you settle on a Terraria class build, look up which buffs synergise with your chosen weapon type and pre-craft a stack before every major encounter.

8. The NPC Happiness System Unlocks Purchase Discounts
Every NPC in Terraria has a preferred biome and a preferred NPC neighbor. When both conditions are satisfied, that NPC sells items at a discount of up to 25% and eventually offers you a Pylon for their biome. The Goblin Tinkerer prefers underground and wants to live near the Mechanic — satisfy both conditions and his reforging service costs noticeably less per roll, which matters when you are spending large amounts of coins on accessories. Check the Terraria wiki for each NPC’s specific preferences before placing permanent houses; ten minutes of planning here saves thousands of coins over the rest of the playthrough.
9. Craft Wings as Your First Hardmode Priority
The moment you defeat the Wall of Flesh and enter Hardmode, Wyvern enemies begin spawning at high altitude in the sky. Wyverns drop Souls of Flight, the primary crafting ingredient for Wings — the Hardmode mobility upgrade that makes all vertical movement effortless and transforms your ability to dodge boss attacks. Wings require Souls of Flight plus Feathers from Harpies and a small number of bars depending on the tier. Craft your first pair before engaging any Mechanical Boss. Every combat encounter in Hardmode becomes significantly more manageable once you are no longer limited to ground-based movement.
10. The Grappling Hook Passes Through Platforms
The Grappling Hook — craftable from a hook dropped by Skeletons underground or purchasable from the Goblin Tinkerer — passes through wooden platforms on floors and ceilings. This makes it the fastest way to move through multi-story base structures: aim at the ceiling of the floor above, fire, and you are through instantly without climbing. Most players use platforms to climb manually for years before discovering this. Upgrade to the Dual Hook as soon as possible; multi-hook variants allow you to swing between anchor points rather than simply pulling yourself to a fixed location.
11. A Few Bombs Clear More Space Than Five Minutes of Pickaxing
Bombs are craftable from Gel dropped by Slimes plus Stone, cost almost nothing to produce in large quantities, and each one clears a 7×7 tile area of stone instantly. Using bombs to excavate boss arena space or clear horizontal mining corridors is dramatically faster than pickaxing in the early game. Sticky Bombs (Bombs plus Gel) stick to walls and detonate reliably in tight spaces without rolling away. Dynamite has a larger blast radius and clears harder materials including Dungeon Bricks — more expensive but invaluable for deep pre-Hardmode tunneling when time matters.
12. Plan Every Boss Fight Around the 60-Second Potion Sickness Cooldown
After drinking a Healing Potion, a 60-second debuff called Potion Sickness prevents you from drinking another. Panic-drinking a potion the moment your health drops wastes this cooldown window. The correct approach is to drink at roughly 40 to 50 percent health, which leaves time for passive regeneration from campfires and Heart Lanterns to partially refill your bar before the cooldown expires. Honey — from standing in a honey pool placed in your arena — also provides healing that bypasses Potion Sickness, making it a useful backup. 13. Destroy Demon Altars in Sets of Three, Then Stop
Demon Altars and Crimson Altars must be smashed with the Pwnhammer (dropped by the Wall of Flesh) to spawn Hardmode ores in your world. Each smash adds one ore vein, but also permanently converts one random stone block somewhere in the world to Corruption or Crimson. Destroying too many altars causes rapid evil biome spread that can consume your Jungle and other biomes permanently. The widely accepted community rule is to smash between six and nine altars at most — giving you two or three complete ore cycles without triggering catastrophic biome conversion that ruins the world for late-game content.
14. Build a Proper Boss Arena Before Every Fight
A flat arena of wooden platforms spanning 100 to 150 tiles, with Campfires and Heart Lanterns placed every 25 tiles, provides constant passive HP regeneration throughout the entire fight at zero cost. The Campfire gives a base regen buff; the Heart Lantern (crafted from a Heart Crystal plus a Gold or Platinum Watch) multiplies the regen rate. Fighting any boss without this setup in place makes the encounter significantly harder than necessary. Add a Sunflower for the morale movement buff and a Peace Candle to reduce random enemy spawns during the fight. 15. The Piggy Bank and Safe Give You Extra Storage That Survives Death
The Piggy Bank (sold by the Merchant for 1 gold) and the Safe (sold by the Merchant for 20 gold) each provide an additional 40-slot inventory accessible from any flat surface. Items stored in either container are not dropped on death — they persist across every death in the game. This effectively gives you a permanent overflow bag for materials and consumables from your very first gold piece. Buy the Piggy Bank as your first major merchant purchase. In Hardmode, the Defender’s Forge adds a third container, giving you access to all three simultaneously from a single placed surface.
16. Collect Fallen Stars Every Night for Mana Crystals
Fallen Stars shower down onto the surface every night and can simply be picked up from the ground. Five Fallen Stars combine into a Mana Crystal, which permanently increases your maximum mana by 20, up to a cap of 200. You need nine Mana Crystals to reach the mana cap, requiring 45 stars — collectable over roughly five to six nights of play. Stars also craft the Star in a Bottle (a furniture piece that passively regenerates mana while placed) and Mana Regeneration Potions. Magic class players should treat star collection as a daily priority from the very start of a world, before any mana upgrades are crafted.
17. Enemy Banners Reduce Damage From That Enemy Type by 15%
Killing 50 of any specific enemy type causes their banner to drop. Placing the banner anywhere in your world activates a passive effect: you deal 15% extra damage to that enemy type and receive 15% less damage from them. Banners stack with armor, accessories, and buff potions. In the late game — particularly in the Dungeon or Jungle Temple, where individual enemies deal large chunks of damage — banner bonuses against the most dangerous mob types meaningfully reduce the punishment of getting hit. Farming banners for Dungeon enemies before starting the main Dungeon assault is a legitimate strategy used by experienced players.
18. Build the Nurse’s House Inside Your Boss Arena
The Nurse NPC heals you for gold coins in proportion to your missing HP, completely bypassing Potion Sickness. Her cost scales with the amount of health restored, so topping up from critical health is expensive but the alternative is dying. Build a small valid house for her directly adjacent to your main boss arena and she becomes an emergency heal point during fights. During Mechanical Boss encounters, experienced players build her house into the arena platform itself and duck in briefly between damage phases. This technique trades gold for survivability without any cooldown penalty, functioning as a paid extra life system.
19. Build in the Glowing Mushroom Biome to Unlock the Truffle NPC
The Truffle NPC only moves in if you have a valid house built inside an above-ground Glowing Mushroom biome. You cannot find a naturally occurring above-ground mushroom biome — you must create one manually using Mushroom Grass Seeds planted on Mud, then wait for the biome to expand to the required minimum of 100 tiles. The Truffle sells Mushroom Spear and Strange Brew, but his most important item in Hardmode is the Autohammer, used to craft Shroomite Bars — the material for Shroomite Armor, the best ranged armor set available before the Lunar Events. Plan the mushroom biome build early in the game rather than scrambling to construct it mid-Hardmode.
20. Moon Charm and Neptune’s Shell Remove Two Major Frustrations
The Moon Charm (dropped by Werewolves at night with a roughly 1-in-357 chance) transforms you into a Werewolf after dark, providing passive melee stat bonuses at no cost. Neptune’s Shell (obtained from Corruptors, Floaty Gross enemies, or Hardmode ocean fishing crates) grants infinite underwater breathing and removes the movement speed penalty that makes ocean exploration so punishing. Combined at the Tinkerer’s Workshop into the Moon Shell accessory, you receive both effects simultaneously. The Shell alone eliminates one of Terraria’s most persistent quality-of-life frustrations and makes ocean biome farming — including Reaver Shark fishing — far more comfortable.
