Terraria Twins Guide: Spazmatism or Retinazer First? The 40% Phase-2 Trigger, Spazmatism’s Defense Jump to 28, and the Skybridge Arena

Kill Spazmatism first. The Terraria Wiki’s Twins page, its strategy guide and Corrosion Hour’s guide all pick the green-eyed twin, and the numbers below show why. Each eye drops into its tougher second form on its own, the moment its health falls below 40%. Spazmatism’s second form has defense 28 (up from 10), a flame stream and Cursed Inferno, so you want it dead while your potions and ammo are full and Retinazer is still in its weakest form.

This guide covers the Twins only. The order of every boss is in our Terraria bosses in order guide, and what to do before you can summon them is in the Terraria Hardmode guide. If you’ve beaten the Eye of Cthulhu, the habits carry over: the Twins are its Hardmode version, split into two bodies with separate health.

Verified against the Terraria Wiki pages as edited between 8 September and 3 October 2026, whose code references cite versions 1.4.5.6 to 1.4.5.8. The only 1.4.5 change to this fight is its music track. Values may change with future updates.

The Twins at a glance

EyeMax health (Classic / Expert / Master)Turns into form two atDefense, form one to form twoSignature attack
Retinazer (red iris)20,000 / 30,000 / 38,2508,000 / 12,000 / 15,30010 to 20Eye Lasers, then Death Lasers
Spazmatism (green iris)23,000 / 34,500 / 43,9889,200 / 13,800 / 17,59510 to 28Cursed Flames, then a flame stream of about 7 seconds

The takeaway: the two eyes share a summon, not a health bar, and each flips to its second form at 40% of its own health, so where you aim decides which one flips first. The Twins flee at dawn (4:30 AM), and the loot, including hearts, drops only once both eyes are dead.

Quick start: the Twins in seven steps

  1. Build a long sky bridge in the Sky layer before you summon anything (lengths and materials are in the arena section below).
  2. Wear your fastest boots (Spectre Boots or better) and wings if you have them. Drink a Swiftness Potion before Retinazer’s second form, as Corrosion Hour suggests.
  3. Load Ichor ammo or arrows if you can. It cuts the defense problem down to size (see “Why phase 2 changes the answer”).
  4. Use a Mechanical Eye at dusk, 7:30 PM, so you get the whole night. A night is about nine real minutes and both eyes flee at 4:30 AM.
  5. Run along the bridge and shoot Spazmatism only, until it’s dead.
  6. Turn on Retinazer and finish it from range.
  7. Collect the drops. Nothing drops until both eyes are down.

Spazmatism or Retinazer first?

Spazmatism first, unless you’re fighting from a walled box (see the build table below). The Terraria Wiki’s tips say Spazmatism may be the better one to defeat first because its Cursed Flames are hard to avoid without mobility gear and buffs in its second form, while Retinazer “cannot inflict debuffs and will not charge in its second phase”. Corrosion Hour’s guide makes the same pick for the same reason, the cursed-flame debuff. I found no guide that argues for Retinazer first with numbers behind it.

Here’s what I added. On the wiki’s own damage numbers, raw damage doesn’t separate the two orders. In Expert Mode the worst moment of a Spazmatism-first fight is Spazmatism’s form-two Eye Fire (108) alongside Retinazer’s form-one laser (76), which adds up to 184 per volley. In a Retinazer-first fight it’s Retinazer’s form-two Death Laser (92) alongside Spazmatism’s form-one flame (88), which adds up to 180. Four points apart. What differs is who you’re left alone with.

OrderEyes on screen togetherWorst overlap (Expert damage per projectile)Who you fight alone at the end
Spazmatism firstSpazmatism 1 + Retinazer 1, then Spazmatism 2 + Retinazer 1Eye Fire 108 + Eye Laser 76 = 184Retinazer: no debuffs, no charges in form two, and a box blocks it
Retinazer firstRetinazer 1 + Spazmatism 1, then Retinazer 2 + Spazmatism 1Death Laser 92 + Cursed Flame 88 = 180Spazmatism: flame stream, Cursed Inferno, defense 28

The takeaway: take the harder eye while your health, potions and ammo are full, and leave the eye that can’t stop your health regeneration for when they aren’t. That’s my reading of the sources, not a tested result.

If you want a quick branching rule:

  • Sky bridge, boots, room to run: Spazmatism first.
  • Walled box with heart statues: the wiki’s own arena note points the other way. Walls block Spazmatism’s Cursed Flame, so it can only charge, and you gun down Retinazer in the meantime.
  • A weapon that hits both eyes: the wiki says Crystal Darts from the Dart Rifle and the Shadowflame Knife can strike both at once. That’s extra damage per shot, but every point on the second eye moves it toward its own 40% line, and the wiki warns the fight gets much harder with both eyes in form two. My advice, which is inference rather than something I’ve timed: spread damage only after the first eye is dead.

Why phase 2 changes the answer

Below 40%, an eye gets more defense and a new attack set, and that’s the only reason the order matters. The 40% rule also has a consequence the wiki doesn’t spell out: the total amount of work is the same whichever eye you pick, so the order only changes who is on screen while you do it. Here’s the ledger for a 40-damage hit on Classic health, with and without Ichor.

StageHealth to removeDefenseDamage kept from a 40 hitHits needed (plain / with Ichor)
Retinazer, form one12,0001035343 / 300
Retinazer, form two8,0002030267 / 217
Spazmatism, form one13,8001035395 / 345
Spazmatism, form two9,2002826354 / 279
Whole fight43,0001,359 / 1,141

Spazmatism’s form two holds 15% more health than Retinazer’s but takes about a third more hits to clear (354 against 267), because of the defense gap. That is the real cost of Spazmatism’s second form, and it’s why you want it dead before your ammo and potions thin out.

The reason is the damage formula. The Terraria Wiki’s Defense page gives enemy damage reduction as the hit minus half the enemy’s defense, in every difficulty, applied after the usual 15% damage variation. Because the reduction is a flat amount per hit, small hits suffer most:

Hit before defenseForm one (defense 10)Retinazer form two (defense 20)Spazmatism form two (defense 28)
20 damage15 (20 with Ichor)10 (17 with Ichor)6 (13 with Ichor)
40 damage35 (40 with Ichor)30 (37 with Ichor)26 (33 with Ichor)
60 damage55 (60 with Ichor)50 (57 with Ichor)46 (53 with Ichor)

The takeaway: a 20-damage hit keeps only 6 against Spazmatism’s second form, 30% of its strength, while a 60-damage hit keeps 46, about 77%. Rapid-fire weapons with weak ammo are the ones that hit this wall. The fix is armor penetration. The Ichor debuff adds 15, which ignores defense completely in form one and wipes out more than half of the 28 in Spazmatism’s form two. Ichor is also the ammo the wiki’s Twins strategy page names for Stormbow, repeater and gun users.

These figures come from the wiki’s formulas, not a stopwatch. Real hits vary by 15% either way and critical hits shift them, so treat the hit counts as a guide to relative cost.

When not to attempt it

Don’t summon the Twins until you have movement boots, a way to move up and down (wings), and Hardmode ore armor. The wiki rates Adamantite armor as the best overall pick and Titanium as the defensive alternative. Two more warnings. First, Life Fruit only starts growing once a mechanical boss has been defeated, and several gear upgrades (Hallowed armor, the Tavernkeep armor sets, Asphalt from the Blend-O-Matic) need one too, so a Twins fight as your first mechanical boss is the leanest-geared version of it. Second, don’t summon late in the night: a Mechanical Eye used at 2:00 AM leaves you about two and a half real minutes before the eyes flee at 4:30 AM, per the Day and night cycle page.

The skybridge arena

A sky bridge is a long single layer of blocks or platforms built high in the sky, usually just under the Space layer so Harpies and Wyverns don’t spawn on you, according to the wiki’s Practical tips page. For the Twins the wiki’s strategy guide calls a very long one optimal, ideally Asphalt or Frozen Slime blocks, because vertical movement is needed to dodge most attacks. With Spectre Boots or an upgrade you keep running, both eyes miss you often, and each one sits at a roughly fixed horizontal position, so you can fire without re-aiming. Platforms leave a clear line of fire, and Asphalt adds speed but needs a Blend-O-Matic from the Steampunker, which only becomes possible after another mechanical boss.

One trap: on Asphalt with boots you can outrun Retinazer, and it can fall behind and despawn. Spazmatism is fast enough to keep up. The Twins also flee if they get too far off-screen, so check behind you now and then.

No source gives a minimum length. The wiki just says “very long”. So here is how long “long” is, using the sprint table on the Movement speed page (Spectre Boots 6 pixels per tick, Lightning Boots 6.75, at 60 ticks a second and 16 pixels a tile):

Bridge length (tiles)One-way run, Spectre Boots (22.5 tiles/s)One-way run, Lightning Boots (25.3 tiles/s)
50022 seconds20 seconds
1,00044 seconds40 seconds
2,0001 min 29 s1 min 19 s
4,120 (full width of a Small world)3 min 3 s2 min 43 s
6,320 (full width of a Medium world)4 min 41 s4 min 10 s
8,320 (full width of a Large world)6 min 10 s5 min 29 s

The takeaway: even a bridge across a whole Small world is only about three minutes one way, and a night lasts nine, so plan on turning around at least once. Widths are the accessible widths on the World size page. These are top speeds, so add a few seconds for acceleration.

Cursed Inferno and the flames

Spazmatism’s flames inflict Cursed Inferno 11 times in 16 (68.75%). The debuff lasts 2 to 3 seconds in Classic, 4 to 6 in Expert and 5 to 7.5 in Master, and it stops your health regeneration while it ticks. The Cursed Inferno page lists the damage as 12 per second on players, 24 on enemies. That page still gives Spazmatism a one-in-three chance, which disagrees with the Twins page; the Twins page’s change history (6 in 16 for the longer duration plus 5 in 16 for the shorter) adds up to 11 in 16, so I used that.

I couldn’t find a published range for the flames in tiles, so I won’t invent one. What is documented: in form one Spazmatism tries to stay horizontally level with you and charges ten times in short bursts; in form two it alternates six faster charges with a stream of about seven seconds that slowly closes in, like a Flamethrower. In Expert its projectiles are 16.7% faster and the delay between form-two charges is much shorter. Walls block the flames. Cursed Inferno also works on the eyes themselves: the wiki notes Spazmatism isn’t immune to it, and because the debuff’s damage can’t be reduced by defense, it ticks the same against defense 28 as against defense 10.

Phase by phase: what each form does

The gear floor is the same for all four forms: Hardmode ore armor and boots, as above. What changes is what you do with them.

  • Retinazer, form one (defense 10): fires purple Eye Lasers, usually from diagonally above, and charges four times over long distances. The Twins page says its aim is poor against a stationary player; the strategy page says the fast lasers make it accurate. I couldn’t reconcile those, so don’t treat it as harmless.
  • Spazmatism, form one (defense 10): green Cursed Flames plus ten quick charges, and it tries to stay level with you horizontally. On a bridge that puts you in its firing line, so keep changing height.
  • Spazmatism, form two (defense 28): the mouth. Stream, then six charges, repeating. Jump as it slows down at the end of a charge and it passes over you, which the wiki says is easier than outrunning it. Use Ichor here.
  • Retinazer, form two (defense 20): only Death Lasers, fired faster as its health drops, with a periodic rapid barrage that tracks well. Falling fast dodges the barrage, and wings let you zig-zag. It needs a clear line of sight, so a box blocks it completely.

Playing with the Calamity Mod?

This guide is for vanilla Terraria. The Calamity Mod changes the fight: its wiki says the twins enter phase 2 at 70% health and that a twin in phase 2 takes almost no damage while the other is still in phase 1. Use our Calamity Mod guide and the mod’s own wiki instead, because the order advice here doesn’t apply.

Frequently asked questions

Which Twin should I kill first?

Spazmatism, in almost every setup, because its second form has the highest defense in the fight and its flame stream stops your regeneration. Leave Retinazer for last, since in form two it can’t inflict debuffs, never charges and can’t hit you through cover.

Does the second Twin get stronger when the first one dies?

No stronger form is documented. The wiki’s strategy page says that when one dies the other continues attacking in the same pattern. The fight gets easier, not harder, because you’re dodging one attack set instead of two.

When do the Twins despawn?

At dawn (4:30 AM), if all players die, or if they get too far off-screen. Since version 1.2.3, one Twin can’t despawn while the other is still active. Killing only one drops no loot and no hearts.

How do I summon the Twins?

Use a Mechanical Eye at night, in any biome. They can also arrive on their own at dusk once you’re in Hardmode and have smashed an altar: a 1 in 30 chance per night at first, rising to 1 in 20 after another mechanical boss falls and 1 in 10 after two.

Did version 1.4.5 change the Twins?

Only the music. Version 1.4.5.0 gave the fight its own track. The 40% trigger and Spazmatism’s 23,000 health date from 1.2.3, and the Cursed Inferno timings from 1.4.0.1.
