Golem has 60,000 HP on Classic, but only 40,000 of it has to die: the head (25,000) and the body (15,000). The two fists, 10,000 each, are optional, so the question that decides this fight is not how to survive the whole boss but which extra 20,000 HP you choose to take on. Below: the arena rule that matters (height, not walls), the fists-or-head call with hit counts, and the real odds on the Picksaw, Sun Stone and Eye of the Golem.
You can only summon Golem after beating Plantera, whose kill is also what drops the Temple Key, and Plantera needs Hardmode, which the Wall of Flesh opens. Golem is the next checkpoint in our Terraria progression guide. Numbers come from the Terraria Wiki (Desktop 1.4.5.8, checked 23 October 2026); the wiki’s Golem history lists a single 1.4.5 change, the Mobius Strip drop added in 1.4.5.7.
Golem at a glance: three kinds of target, two must die
Golem is one boss made of separate health pools, and the table shows which ones you have to empty. Defense is flat, so it matters more for weak hits than strong ones.
| Part | Classic | Expert | Master | Defense | Must die? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Head (first form) | 25,000 | 37,500 | 47,812 | 20 | Yes: the body is invincible until the head falls |
| Body (second form) | 15,000 | 22,500 | 28,687 | 26 | Yes: killing it ends the fight |
| Each fist | 10,000 | 15,000 | 19,125 | 28 | No |
| Required total (our sum) | 40,000 | 60,000 | 76,499 | ||
| Everything, both fists included | 60,000 | 90,000 | 114,749 |
Both fists add 50% on top of the mandatory total in every mode, and every part is immune to knockback. The wiki also lists a “detached head” with its own health figure, but that head is invulnerable and is destroyed when the body dies, so it is never a target.
How to beat Golem: quick start before you press the altar
- Beat Plantera and take her Temple Key to the Lihzahrd Temple door; one key unlocks it for everyone in the world.
- Carry a Lihzahrd Power Cell: the altar uses one per summon. Every Lihzahrd Chest holds one, and Lihzahrds and Flying Snakes drop one at 1 in 50.
- Walk to the altar room at the bottom of the temple and build the platform row described below before you use the altar.
- Set up regeneration in the room: the wiki guide picks campfires and a Heart Lantern for health, Stars in Bottles for mana if you use magic, and Lihzahrd and Flying Snake Banners (you will be in the temple on a first kill).
- Check your survivability against Golem’s heaviest hits, all before your defense: the detached head does 80 / 128 / 192 on contact, the body 72 / 115 / 173, and the Eye Beam 56 / 112 / 168 (Classic / Expert / Master). If two in a row would kill you, do not start.
Where to fight: the altar cannot move, so build up
Fight in Golem’s own temple room and put a row of platforms about 25 to 30 tiles above the floor: the wiki’s strategy guide gives about 25 to 30 tiles and says Golem cannot jump that high. That is the core of the arena in one rule, and it exists because of three constraints you cannot change on a first kill.
First, the three Lihzahrd Bricks under the Lihzahrd Altar cannot be actuated, so the wiki says it is impossible to relocate the altar before Golem has died once. Second, the room’s bricks need a Picksaw or better to mine, and the Picksaw is one of Golem’s own drops, so you will not have it yet. Third, walls are useless against this boss: it passes through solid blocks when it leaps, its fists travel through blocks, and so do its Eye Beams. Height beats the jump; no wall you build stops the rest.

Two more arena facts from the wiki. Golem despawns if its head chases you too far, because distance is measured from the body, so keep your row inside the room. And Golem enrages whenever it is outside the Underground Jungle (faster jumps, and faster Eye Beams once the head is under 50%), which matters only if you later mine the altar and move it. One caution: neither the wiki nor its guide publishes the room’s height, so we could not check that your room is tall enough, and we did not test the figure in game. Build the highest row your room allows and watch whether the body reaches it.
The wiki’s Golem page also records an odd case in its tips: terrain around the altar can leave Golem stuck at spawn, able to punch and fire but unable to jump, and you can recreate that by placing blocks near the altar. We did not verify it in game, so treat it as a wiki-documented option rather than a tested strategy.
Fists first or head first?
The strategy guide says to take the fists out first because they become “brutal” if left, but the wiki’s boss page lists the price: a fist launches more often as its health drops, and each dead fist makes Golem jump more often, compounding when both die. So the right order depends on where you stand.
| Your position | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| On a platform row above the jump range | Fists first, then head, then body | The extra jumps cannot reach you, so killing the fists costs only damage, and it removes the punches. |
| On the floor or a low ledge | Head first, leave the fists | Every dead fist adds jumps you must dodge on foot, and you skip 20,000 HP of work. |
| Low damage per hit (about 100 or less before defense) | Head and body only | The table below: at 100 per hit the required 40,000 HP takes 451 hits, and the fists add 234 more. |
This is our reading of the wiki’s mechanics, not a published ranking. The hit counts use the wiki’s defense rule: an enemy’s defense removes half its value from each hit, and Expert and Master do not change that. They ignore the 15% damage variance, so treat them as the middle of a range.
| Raw damage per hit | Hits on head (def 20) | Hits on body (def 26) | Hits per fist (def 28) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 | 500 | 320 | 218 |
| 100 | 278 | 173 | 117 |
| 150 | 179 | 110 | 74 |
| 250 | 105 | 64 | 43 |
These are Classic counts. Expert HP is exactly 1.5 times Classic, so multiply by 1.5; Master is about 1.9 times. The jump from 60 to 100 damage per hit cuts the head from 500 hits to 278, so a weapon upgrade moves this fight more than most arena tweaks.
Phase two: when the head comes off
Below 50% head health (12,500 on Classic, 18,750 on Expert) the head starts firing Eye Beams, and its fireballs, which have a 50% chance to set you On Fire!, hit harder: 36 damage becomes 48 on Classic. When the head’s health runs out it detaches, becomes invulnerable, passes through blocks and always fires two Eye Beams, while the body jumps faster as its own health falls. The wiki guide’s advice for the burn is blunt: dodging the fireballs is your priority, because On Fire! blocks regeneration.
| If you are… | Prioritize |
|---|---|
| New to Hardmode | Platform row, campfire and Heart Lantern under it, fists first. Do not chase the head; keep inside the room. |
| Casual, wants it over fast | Head and body only. At 150 damage per hit that is 289 hits, against 148 more for the fists, so skipping them is a choice about time, not a necessity. |
| Optimizer | Armor penetration: it returns half the defense, so 20 penetration recovers 10 damage per hit on the head. The wiki guide names Golden Shower (+15), the Terra Blade for the fists, and the Spectre Staff, Leaf Blower and Inferno Fork for magic. |
| Completionist | Master mode adds a Golem Relic (100%) and the Guardian Golem pet (25%); the Expert bag adds a Shiny Stone. Plan for repeat kills, per the odds below. |
Loot and the real odds
Each kill makes one roll among seven items, 1 in 7 (14.29%) each: Sun Stone, Eye of the Golem, Heat Ray, Staff of Earth, Stynger (always with 60 to 99 bolts), Possessed Hatchet and Golem Fist. The wiki’s history notes explain the number: when the Picksaw moved to its own roll in 1.4.0.1, the rate rose from 1/8 to 1/7. The Picksaw is 25% on Classic and 33.33% from the Expert Treasure Bag.

Because the seven share one roll, the Sun Stone and the Eye can never drop together. The table turns the wiki’s rates into the kills you should budget, assuming independent kills.
| Kills | One named item (1/7) | Sun Stone or Eye | Picksaw, Classic | Picksaw, Expert bag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 14% | 29% | 25% | 33% |
| 3 | 37% | 64% | 58% | 70% |
| 5 | 54% | 81% | 76% | 87% |
| 7 | 66% | 91% | 87% | 94% |
| 10 | 79% | 97% | 94% | 98% |
| 15 | 90% | 99% | 99% | 100% |
In plain terms: about 15 kills for a 90% chance at one specific item, 7 for either accessory, 8 for the Picksaw on Classic and 6 in Expert, and roughly 18 on average to collect all seven. Also worth knowing: the Mobius Strip (16.67%) arrived in 1.4.5.7 per Re-Logic’s patch notes, and the same patch cut the Possessed Hatchet’s Hemorrhage from 8 to 12 seconds down to 2 to 4, so any guide older than 19 August 2026 will list the old duration. Beetle Husks are guaranteed (4 to 8 on Classic, 18 to 23 from the bag).
What Golem unlocks
Defeating Golem is the prerequisite for the Lunar Events, Martian Madness and tier 3 of the Old One’s Army, so it is the gate between mid-Hardmode and the endgame. The full order is in our progression guide, and the boss sequence sits in all Terraria bosses in order.
FAQ
Do I have to kill the fists?
No. The wiki states it is not required to defeat them, and the fight ends when the body dies. Kill them only if you are on a platform where the extra jumps cannot reach you, or your damage is high enough that 50% more work is cheap.
Can I fight Golem outside the temple?
Not on a first kill, because the altar cannot be moved. After that, you can mine the altar once you own a Picksaw or better (it drops at 25% per Classic kill) and place it elsewhere, but Golem enrages outside the Underground Jungle, so keep it inside the jungle unless you want faster jumps.
Sun Stone or Eye of the Golem?
For a boss-fighting build the Eye is the safer pick: its +10% critical chance works at any time, while the Sun Stone’s bonuses only apply during the day. The Sun Stone’s other use is as an ingredient for the Celestial Stone, together with a Moon Stone.
How many Power Cells should I bring?
One per summon. If you are farming a specific item, the table says to budget about 15, and chests give one each, guaranteed, while Lihzahrds drop one at only 1 in 50.
