Chase Shiny Applin first. It is the shiny that never existed in Pokémon GO before this week: Niantic’s event post says “for the first time in Pokémon GO, you’ll be able to encounter Shiny Applin.” The boosted shiny is Smoliv, but Shiny Smoliv debuted in the November 2024 Harvest Festival, so it is a second-chance shiny, not a debut. The clock matters too: the event ends Monday, October 5 at 8:00 p.m. local time, and Harvest Festival: Taken Over (the Shadow Zekrom debut) switched on at 12:00 a.m. local time on Friday, October 2. Both halves are running at once.
Which Shiny Should You Chase First?
Shiny Applin is the better first target because it is the only one you cannot get any other way, and it unlocks four shiny evolutions. Shiny Smoliv gets the odds boost, but you may already own one.
| Question | Shiny Applin | Shiny Smoliv |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Debut this event | Debuted Nov 2024 |
| Event odds | “If you’re lucky” — no boost listed | “Increased chance” listed as an event bonus |
| How you meet it | Rare wild spawn, Mossy Lure taps, Field Research encounters | Common wild spawn, Mossy Lure taps |
| What it leads to | Shiny Flapple, Appletun, Dipplin, Hydrapple | Its own evolution line |
| Chase it if | You want a shiny nobody has had before | You missed 2024 or want a second chance |
Why the Boost Isn’t the Whole Story
A shiny chance applies to each encounter, so what limits you is how many encounters you get per hour. Smoliv is a common wild spawn, so its boost converts into a yes-or-no answer quickly. Leek Duck’s event page lists Applin only as a rare wild encounter, which means walking around waiting for one is the slow route.
Mossy Lure Modules change that. During the event they attract only apples, and tapping one gives Tart, Sweet or Syrupy Apples or an encounter with an event Pokémon, with Applin and Smoliv both on the list. In practice, that makes lures the most efficient place to stack Applin encounters while Smoliv boost rolls come along for free. At GO Pass Rank 10, Niantic says lures last an hour.
One thing nobody has published: neither Niantic nor Leek Duck nor Pokémon GO Hub gives a numeric shiny rate for either Pokémon. Any “1 in X” figure you see quoted is a community estimate, so this guide doesn’t use one.
What Changes When Taken Over Starts
Very little changes for the apple hunt. Leek Duck notes that Applin Picking Pokémon “will continue to appear in the wild” during Taken Over, so the pool merges rather than swaps. What Taken Over adds is competition for your time.
- Shadow Zekrom: you earn a Super Rocket Radar through GO Pass: Harvest Festival, then track Giovanni at PokéStops. Niantic’s page doesn’t say which GO Pass rank carries the Radar, so check your Pass in-game. Our Giovanni guide covers the fight.
- Shiny Shroodle: hatchable for the first time, and it evolves into Shiny Grafaiai.
- Shiny Slugma: increased encounter chance, plus more Team GO Rocket at PokéStops and in balloons.
- Frustration removal: a Charged TM now lets a Shadow Pokémon forget Frustration.
The deadline gap is worth knowing: the events end together on Monday, October 5 at 8:00 p.m., but GO Pass rewards can be claimed until Wednesday, October 7 at 8:00 p.m. local time.
Priorities by Player Type
The right split of your last three days depends on what you want from the event, and the Applin hunt and the Zekrom chase compete for the same hours.
| If you are | Spend your time on | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| A shiny hunter | Mossy Lures all day, both shiny rolls at once | Rocket fights beyond the Zekrom rescue |
| A casual player with one hour a day | One lure session, then the Timed Research | Hatching for Shroodle unless eggs are already incubating |
| A Shadow and PvP player | Radar, Giovanni, Shadow Zekrom | Chasing Shiny Smoliv |
| A completionist | Applin first, then Shiny Shroodle hatches | Nothing, but order matters |
Last Three Days: Quick Start
- Finish the Branching Timed Research before Monday, October 5, 8:00 p.m. local time. You pick a Flapple, Appletun or Dipplin path, each paying a different apple. Our research tasks guide explains how branching tasks work.
- Run Mossy Lures wherever you can stand still, since they are the encounter engine for both shinies.
- Budget your apples before you evolve anything. Pokémon GO Hub puts the evolution cost at 200 Candy plus 20 apples, and lures and research are where the apples come from. Check the cost in-game before you commit. The Applin evolution breakdown covers the branches.
- Claim every GO Pass reward by Wednesday, October 7.
Verified on October 2, 2026 against Niantic’s event posts and Leek Duck. Bonuses and spawn lists can change during an event. We haven’t logged our own shiny encounters for this event, so everything above comes from the named sources, not first-hand play.
