Pokemon GO Giovanni Guide: How to Beat Him & Get Shadow Legendaries

Giovanni is the ultimate villain in Pokemon GO — the boss of Team GO Rocket and the only trainer in the game who rewards you with a shadow legendary Pokemon upon defeat. Fighting him is a monthly event tied to Special Research, and the reward changes every season. If you want shadow Mewtwo, shadow Entei, shadow Lugia, or whatever legendary is currently on offer, you need to beat Giovanni first.

This guide covers everything: how to get the Super Rocket Radar, how to find Giovanni, his full lineup with counters, battle strategy, and what to do with your shadow legendary reward.

How to Get the Super Rocket Radar

You cannot challenge Giovanni without a Super Rocket Radar. This special item is obtained exclusively through completing Special Research — the Giovanni-specific quest chains that Niantic releases periodically (titled things like “A Shadowy Threat” or “Shadowy Skirmishes”).

Here is the general process to earn your Super Rocket Radar:

  1. Complete the active Giovanni Special Research chain in your quest tab.
  2. As part of the research, you must defeat the three Team GO Rocket Leaders: Arlo, Cliff, and Sierra. Each leader drops a Rocket Radar component when defeated (you need six components total to build one Rocket Radar).
  3. Defeat each Leader once using your assembled Rocket Radars.
  4. After defeating all three Leaders, the final research step awards the Super Rocket Radar.

If you already have an unused Super Rocket Radar from a previous month, it carries over — you can save it and use it whenever you are ready. However, only one Super Rocket Radar can be held at a time.

Before you can reach Giovanni, you will also need to be battling Team Rocket Grunts regularly to collect the Mysterious Components that build your standard Rocket Radar. Grunts are the first step in the whole progression chain.

How to Find Giovanni

Once you activate your Super Rocket Radar, Giovanni can appear in two locations:

  • Hot Air Balloons: Giovanni occasionally appears in a Team Rocket balloon floating above the map. Tap the balloon to initiate the encounter directly. This is the most reliable method.
  • PokeStops: Spin PokeStops while the Super Rocket Radar is active. Some stops will have Team Rocket grunt icons — most will be disguised Grunts pretending to be Giovanni. You must battle and defeat each fake Giovanni before moving on to find the real one.

Dealing with Disguised Grunts

The disguised Grunt mechanic is one of the most confusing parts for new players. When you spin a PokeStop and a “Giovanni” appears, it is often just a regular Grunt in disguise. You will know immediately at the start of the battle — real Giovanni opens with Persian; fakes use their normal Grunt lineups. Defeat the fakes to narrow down which stop holds the real Giovanni. Balloons skip this problem entirely.

Giovanni’s Lineup

Giovanni always uses three Pokemon across three phases. His lineup is partially fixed and partially rotating:

Phase 1 — Persian (Always)

Giovanni always leads with Persian, a Normal-type Pokemon. Persian is relatively easy to counter but has decent speed and can be annoying if you let it stack up fast moves.

Best counters for Persian:

  • Machamp (Counter / Dynamic Punch)
  • Conkeldurr (Counter / Dynamic Punch)
  • Lucario (Counter / Aura Sphere)
  • Hariyama (Counter / Dynamic Punch)

Fighting-types are the clear choice here. Use this phase to burn Giovanni’s shields — throw charged moves as fast as possible.

Phase 2 — Rotating Slot

Giovanni’s second Pokemon rotates between a set of options. Historically these have included Nidoqueen, Rhyperior, Kingler, and Garchomp. Check the current rotation on Leekduck or Pokemon GO Hub before your fight, as Niantic updates lineups with each new season.

RhyperiorRock / GroundKyogre, Vaporeon (Water); Torterra, Leafeon (Grass)
KinglerWaterMagnezone, Raikou, Zekrom (Electric); Tangrowth (Grass)
GarchompDragon / GroundMamoswine, Glaceon (Ice); Togekiss, Gardevoir (Fairy)

Phase 3 — Shadow Legendary

Giovanni’s final Pokemon is always a shadow legendary, and it changes each month or season. Past shadow legendaries have included:

  • Shadow Mewtwo
  • Shadow Entei
  • Shadow Suicune
  • Shadow Raikou
  • Shadow Articuno
  • Shadow Zapdos
  • Shadow Moltres
  • Shadow Lugia
  • Shadow Latias / Latios

Check the current in-game Special Research or community resources like Pokemon GO Hub and Leekduck to confirm which legendary is available right now. Counter it based on its type weaknesses — always research before the fight so you are not caught off guard.

Battle Strategy: How to Beat Giovanni

Giovanni is one of the harder trainer battles in Pokemon GO. He uses two shields, which means you need to plan your charged moves carefully.

Shield Baiting

The standard strategy is to bait his shields early using low-energy charged moves in Phase 1 (Persian). Moves like Machamp’s Cross Chop charge quickly and can force Giovanni to waste both shields before Phase 2 or 3. Once his shields are gone, your heavy charged moves will land unblocked on the shadow legendary in Phase 3.

Team Composition Tips

  • Lead with a strong Fighting-type to handle Persian and bait shields fast.
  • Bring a type-specific counter for his Phase 2 rotation (check the table above).
  • Save your highest DPS attacker for Phase 3 — the shadow legendary has the most HP and no shields remaining.
  • Shadow Pokemon of your own deal 20% more damage, making them ideal choices if you have strong shadow attackers powered up.
  • Giovanni’s Pokemon have boosted Attack as shadow Pokemon, so they hit harder than standard versions — do not underestimate his legendary in Phase 3.

Timing Charged Moves

Tap rapidly during the charged move mini-game to maximise damage. Giovanni’s AI sometimes delays its charged moves slightly — use that window to switch Pokemon if one is about to faint, preserving your team health across all three phases.

Shadow Legendary Reward: What to Do Next

After defeating Giovanni, you get a guaranteed encounter with the current shadow legendary. The catch rate is reasonably high with Golden Razz Berries, but always use them — missing a shadow legendary encounter stings.

Should You Purify Your Shadow Legendary?

This is the most common question. Here is the short answer: usually no.

Shadow Pokemon deal 20% more damage in battles, raids, and PvP (at the cost of taking 20% more damage). For offensive roles — which is what most legendaries excel at — the shadow bonus almost always outweighs the benefits of purification. The +2 IV bonus from purification rarely makes a meaningful difference at high IV ranges, and the reduction in power-up cost is minor for most players.

Exceptions where purification might make sense:

  • You caught the legendary with perfect or near-perfect IVs and want a strong PvP defender.
  • You plan to use it in the Great League or Ultra League where bulk matters more than raw damage.
  • You simply want the purified Pokedex entry.

For raids and Master League, keep it as a shadow Pokemon.

Farming Giovanni: Monthly Resets & New Research

Giovanni resets monthly. Here is what that means for farming:

  • Each month (or season), Niantic releases a new Giovanni Special Research quest with a new shadow legendary reward.
  • Completing the research and defeating Giovanni awards the legendary encounter — you cannot farm him repeatedly with the same radar.
  • After claiming your reward, watch for the next Special Research to drop and begin the chain again immediately.
  • Old Special Research tasks (from previous events) often remain completable even after the event ends, though the reward Pokemon may no longer be the current one. Check in-game notifications to confirm.

The fastest way to stay on top of Giovanni cycles is to defeat Rocket Grunts consistently throughout the month to stockpile Mysterious Components and keep your Rocket Radar chain moving.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not checking the current rotation: Giovanni’s Phase 2 changes — bringing wrong counters wastes potions and time.
  • Wasting shields on Phase 3: If you do not bait shields in Phase 1, Giovanni will block your strongest moves in the shadow legendary phase.
  • Ignoring balloons: Many players forget that Giovanni appears in balloons. Check the sky — it saves time over PokeStop hunting.
  • Purifying immediately: Do not purify in a rush. Evaluate the IVs and your intended use case first.
  • Missing the research window: Special Research does not always expire, but the shadow legendary reward changes. Complete it while the legendary you want is current.

Conclusion

Giovanni is the hardest — and most rewarding — Team Rocket battle in Pokemon GO. The shadow legendary he drops each month is one of the best ways to add a high-value attacker to your roster without relying on raid luck. Follow the Super Rocket Radar process, bait his shields early, tailor your team to his current lineup, and the shadow legendary encounter is yours.
