Abyssal Lich is not a new class. It is the Lich ascendancy with four of its nine notables swapped out, and the notables that keep you alive are not among them. Soulless Form, Eternal Life, Eldritch Empowerment, Incessant Cacophony and Crystalline Phylactery stay exactly as they are, according to poe2db’s Abyssal Lich page. Only the offensive notables change: Rupture the Soul becomes Rupture the Flesh, Necromantic Conduit becomes Umbral Well, Blackened Heart becomes Unwilling Offering, and Price of Power becomes Steward of Kulemak.
That changes what “will it survive T11?” actually asks. Most players reach Tier 11 maps (area level 75) as a regular Lich, because the swap sits behind a fight against the Vessel of Kulemak. So the defence that carries you through T11 is the shared half of the tree, and the order you spend your 8 ascendancy points in matters more than which Abyssal notable you eventually pick.
Verified against: patch 0.5.5 (4 September 2026), whose notes state there were no Skill Gem or Ascendancy balance changes, plus current poe2db data and Maxroll’s Lich guide, updated the same week. I have not run the Kulemak fight on a Lich myself; everything below comes from the sources named, and where they disagree I say so. Energy shield figures are build-guide targets, not tested thresholds.

Quick Start: Eight Moves in Order
- Treat Abyssal Lich as a late swap, not a starting class. You must already be a Lich to use it.
- Pair 1 (points 1–2): Soulless Form. Pair 2 (points 3–4): Eternal Life. Both survive the swap.
- Wear Atziri’s Disdain once Eternal Life is allocated and take Heavy Buffer on the tree. With Soulless Form that is 25% of damage bypassing ES, which Eternal Life turns into damage reduction.
- Cap all resistances at 75%, chaos included. Chaos damage strips twice as much energy shield.
- Add Convalescence and “faster start of ES recharge” before you run into T11.
- Pick pairs 3–4 for your main skill, using the decision list below. Do not buy Abyssal damage notables for a skill Steward of Kulemak cannot copy.
- Run the T11 diagnostic table (area level 75) before you push.
- Swap only when it pays: take a Kulemak’s Invitation to the Well of Souls when your skill passes the test and you can afford a one-shot fight.

What Abyssal Lich Actually Changes
Four damage notables are replaced and none of the defensive ones are. The table pairs each Lich notable with its replacement, using poe2db’s current ascendancy data for the wording.
| Lich notable | Abyssal replacement | What actually changes | Who gains |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rupture the Soul | Rupture the Flesh | Cursed kills still have a 33% chance to explode for a quarter of max Life, but as Physical damage instead of Chaos | Physical and projectile builds; costs chaos-scaling builds |
| Necromantic Conduit | Umbral Well | Skeletal minions you would create grant you Umbral Souls (a personal buff per skeleton type) instead | Builds that want the buffs, not the minions |
| Blackened Heart | Unwilling Offering | Offerings can target enemies in cull range and affect you instead of your minions | Offering builds that cull |
| Price of Power | Steward of Kulemak | Grants Abyssal Apparition: a damaging spell consumes a Power Charge and an Apparition recasts it | Plain, non-excluded spells |
One source disagrees on the count. Poe Vault’s launch-era write-up lists only three swaps. poe2db’s current page also lists Rupture the Flesh, and Maxroll’s Lich overview still lists Rupture the Soul as the chaos version, so I follow poe2db’s four.
Steward of Kulemak Is Not a Clear Upgrade on Paper
Price of Power gives spells 40% more damage when they consume a Power Charge. Per poe2db’s Abyssal Apparition entry, the Apparition’s recast deals 50–60% less damage (gem levels 1–20), which is 40–50% of an extra cast. On the tooltips that is roughly a wash; my arithmetic, and the live numbers with your own modifiers will differ. The gain is the build types it opens up, and the limits are real: the Apparition does not copy channelling spells, spells with a cooldown, triggered spells, item-granted spells, or spells that already consume a Power Charge.
Umbral Well is more interesting for defence than its reputation suggests. Umbral Souls give Skeletal Clerics 30% increased ES recharge rate and Skeletal Frost Mages 35% increased maximum ES, alongside offensive buffs such as 15% projectile speed per Skeletal Sniper or 25% spell damage per Storm Mage. Two skeleton types become survivability buffs for you.
How to Unlock It, and What It Costs
You need a Lich, a Kulemak’s Invitation and a one-shot fight. Per Timesaver.gg’s Vessel of Kulemak guide (patch 0.5.3), the Invitation drops with 100% certainty from Tasgul, Swallower of Light or Vandroth, Blackblooded Enslaver, Abyssal Commanders found in level 79+ areas. Area level 79 is a Tier 15 waystone on poe2db’s waystone table, so farming it yourself is a T15 activity. Patch 0.5.5 added Large Abyssal Ravines, where maps are guaranteed to contain Abysses, though the notes do not say they raise Commander odds. Our Abyss guide covers depth spawning and jewel priorities.
The alternative is to buy one. poe2db’s trade snapshot showed about 1.7 Divine Orbs when I checked on 6 October 2026, while Timesaver reports 15–20 Exalted early in the league. Prices swing, so check the Currency Exchange before you plan around either number.
- Take the Invitation to the Well of Souls and jump in. It is consumed on entry with no refund if you die or leave, per Timesaver.
- Beat the Vessel of Kulemak, a level 79 boss per poe2db. Poe Vault counts four kills in total; each revival lets you add a modifier to a unique ring by choosing one of three petrified Liches.
- Kill the Vessel at Full Strength on a Lich. That triggers the “Embrace abyssal power?” prompt, and an urn lets you toggle between Lich and Abyssal Lich freely afterwards.
Two caveats. The sources disagree on retries: a Kami Labs build page says six attempts before the fight resets, while Timesaver says there is no hard reset timer. I could not confirm either, so treat the Invitation as a one-shot. And Poe Vault lists no gear or defence prerequisites, which means “have your defence solved first” is my judgement, not a rule. Timesaver does note that difficulty climbs with each revival.
The Passive Order: Four Pairs, Four Notables
Spend defence first, and keep the last pair flexible. Ascendancy points arrive in four sets of two, so 8 points buy four notables in practice. Our all 8 ascendancy points and when to run each trial covers which trial pays each pair; it was written before 0.5.5 reworked the Trial of Chaos, so check the unlock rules in-game, although the patch notes confirm no ascendancy changes.

Pairs 1 and 2 land in Acts 2 and 3, long before the Abyssal swap exists for you, so they can only go on shared notables. Soulless Form gives the first 10% of bypass and, per poe2db, regenerates mana at 6% of maximum Life per second. Eternal Life says your Life cannot change while you have energy shield. On its own it only locks your Life bar, and the bypass sources that follow are what it converts into damage reduction.
Maxroll’s Essence Drain Lich guide (updated 4 September 2026) orders its points Eldritch Empowerment, Soulless Form, Eternal Life, Crystalline Phylactery. That is a damage-first order for a Lich that never swaps. I put defence first for two reasons. Eldritch Empowerment sacrifices 5% of maximum ES every cast, a cost that hurts most when your ES pool is smallest. And Atziri’s Disdain pays off only once Eternal Life is allocated; Maxroll says to equip it “as soon as possible” after. Under Maxroll’s order Eternal Life arrives at point 6, under mine at point 4. Both are defensible, and the gap is how long you run without it.
Pairs 3 and 4 are the damage pair, and the right pick depends on the skill:
- Channelled, cooldown, triggered or item-granted main skill, or one that already consumes a Power Charge: stay a regular Lich. Steward of Kulemak cannot copy it. See our Lich build for the chaos DoT version.
- Chaos-scaled damage: stay a regular Lich. Rupture the Flesh is physical, so your chaos modifiers do not apply to the explosion.
- Physical, projectile-speed or plain-spell damage: Abyssal is worth the Invitation. A Kami Labs Plants/Bonestorm build takes Eternal Life then Rupture the Flesh, and a Twister build uses Umbral Well, whose own maths gives 15% projectile speed per Skeletal Sniper, about 210% with 10 snipers plus Projectile Acceleration III. Those are Tier 4 sources, so use them as shapes, not promises.
What happens to points you have already spent when you swap is not documented in what I fetched. poe2db only says Trialmaster and Balbala offer point refunds in rooms with ascendancy altars. Until you know, keep pairs 3–4 as late as the game allows so a swap never forces you to rebuy a defensive pick.
The Defensive Layer: 25% Reduction on Top of the ES Pool
If the bypass sources add, as the build guides assume, the shared Lich layer is worth 25% damage reduction on top of whatever ES you stack. The table lists each layer, what it gives and when you get it.
| Layer | Source | Number | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| ES bypass #1 | Soulless Form | 10% of damage bypasses ES | Points 1–2 |
| Conversion | Eternal Life | Life cannot change while ES > 0 | Points 3–4 |
| ES bypass #2 | Atziri’s Disdain | 10% bypass, plus 10–15% of max Life as extra ES; requires level 40 | After Eternal Life |
| ES bypass #3 | Heavy Buffer | 5% bypass, 40% increased max ES | Passive tree |
| Resistances | Gear and tree | 75% cap; about 115% total needed after campaign penalties; chaos is not penalised | Before T1 |
| Recovery | Convalescence | 30 Spirit, 30 s cooldown, 3–3.95 s uninterrupted recharge | Before T11 |
| Recovery | Umbral Well (Abyssal) | Cleric +30% recharge rate; Frost Mage +35% max ES | After the swap |

The mechanism: Maxroll puts it plainly: “Eternal Life turns any source of % of Damage taken bypasses Energy Shield into damage reduction, as long as you have energy shield.” Bypassed damage would normally hit your Life, but Eternal Life stops your Life changing while ES remains, so it is simply lost. Twenty-five percent less damage taken means your ES lasts 1 ÷ 0.75, about 33% longer: 8,500 ES behaves like roughly 11,300. The 8,500 figure is the endgame target in one Plants build guide; the Twister build reports a 5,000–7,000 baseline, around 9,500 in boss phases.
The catch is that ES is a single point of failure. Once it reaches zero, Life is exposed and the reduction disappears. poe2db’s energy shield entry adds two rules that decide how that happens: chaos damage removes twice as much ES, and bleeding and poison bypass ES to hit Life directly. Eternal Life should block that Life damage while ES lasts, which is my inference from its text rather than anything I found tested. The doubled chaos rate is why chaos resistance matters more here than for a Life build: a 1,000-damage chaos hit at 0% resistance strips 2,000 ES, but at 75% only 500.
Resistances need most of the campaign to get right. Maxroll’s defence guide counts a −10% elemental penalty per Act, −40% by Act 3 Cruel after the +20% from permanent boss rewards, so reaching the 75% cap needs 115% total. Chaos resistance carries no penalty. Keep elemental resistance above 30% in the campaign, then close the gap before you enter Waystones.
Two more notable costs belong in the budget. Eldritch Empowerment spends 5% of maximum ES per cast for 30% more damage, so a build that casts rapidly pays for it in buffer. And Crystalline Phylactery makes skills cost 50% more mana if you have no ES, which punishes the moment you are already in trouble.
Before You Push T11 (Area Level 75)
T11 is area level 75 per poe2db. That is also the level where the final ascendancy pair is earned, so the build you are testing is usually only just complete. No source I found publishes an official ES threshold for T11, and Maxroll says only that Waystone modifiers can make a map impossible depending on your build. Use the table as a diagnostic, not a pass mark.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| ES empties in one or two hits | Pool too small, or chaos hits at low chaos resistance (2x ES loss) | Cap chaos resistance; stack ES toward the 8,500 guide target; check bypass sources are live |
| ES does not return between packs | Recharge delay too long | Take faster start of ES recharge; use Convalescence as the panic button |
| Life bar moves while ES is above zero | Eternal Life not allocated, or ES actually at zero | Check the ascendancy tab and the ES readout |
| Dying in Abyss packs | Standing in melee; Maxroll calls Abyss mobs “quite challenging” | Keep range; Blasphemy Temporal Chains to slow them and recharge between engagements |
| Running out of maps at T11–T15 | Waystone sustain, not defence | See our waystone sustain through the T11–T15 bracket |
If You Are a New, Casual or Min-Max Player
| Player type | Do this | Skip this |
|---|---|---|
| New player | Ascend Lich, take Soulless Form then Eternal Life, and clear T11 as a regular Lich. Start with our PoE2 beginner’s guide and starting classes for the class basics | Buying an Invitation before your resistances are capped |
| Casual player | Stay Lich unless your skill passes the Apparition test; one Invitation is one attempt | Chasing the swap for the “secret” label |
| Min-maxer | Swap for a physical or projectile skill, build around Rupture the Flesh and Umbral Well, and compare against Price of Power on a training dummy first | Assuming Steward of Kulemak doubles your damage |
The Lich is also not your only Witch route: our Lich vs Blood Mage vs Infernalist comparison covers when Blood Mage or Infernalist suits you better.
When Not to Go Abyssal
- Your main skill is on the Apparition exclusion list.
- Your damage scales chaos, because Rupture the Flesh is physical.
- You cannot yet clear T11 as a regular Lich. The swap leaves the defensive half unchanged, so it will not fix a survivability problem.
- You would be paying a full Invitation for a skill you have not tested with Steward of Kulemak.
FAQ
Is Abyssal Lich stronger than regular Lich?
Not on the tooltips. Steward of Kulemak adds 40–50% of a cast where Price of Power adds 40% more damage, so the gain depends on whether your skill suits the notables. Its real strength is physical, projectile and Umbral Soul builds, and it adds little to your core defence beyond Umbral Well’s Cleric and Frost Mage buffs.
Can I switch back if I do not like it?
Yes. poe2db and Timesaver both describe a free toggle at the urn in the Black Cathedral. What happens to the points you spent is the undocumented part, so do not assume they carry over.
Should I take Eternal Life before Eldritch Empowerment?
I would, because Eternal Life’s value rises as bypass sources stack and Eldritch Empowerment drains ES at its most fragile. Maxroll reverses the order for damage reasons. If you are one-shot rather than slow, defence first is the safer bet.
Is Chaos Inoculation worth pairing with Eternal Life?
Only if chaos is your main source of ES loss. Chaos Inoculation sets maximum Life to 1 and makes you immune to chaos damage and bleeding, and the Twister build above switches to it at 5–7k ES. The trade is that ES is then your entire health bar. I have not tested the combination.
Do I need T15 to unlock it?
No, but the Vessel is a level 79 boss and farming the Commanders needs area level 79. Buying an Invitation lets you do the fight earlier, at your own risk.
