Sulfur runs out fast once you’re crafting Gunpowder in batches, and most “best sulfur locations” round-ups stop at a pin on a map. Two things actually decide whether your sulfur supply keeps up: which zone you’re mining in, and how long a stripped node actually takes to refill — and that second number gets stated wrong more often than not. Mount Obsidian holds roughly 60% of every sulfur node on the map, but it’s also a Level 2 heat zone that will burn you down if you walk in wearing your default gear. This guide covers the real regen math, the specific coordinates worth building a base around, and the heat-resistance mechanism you need to understand before you plant a base anywhere near lava. New to the game? Our Palworld beginner’s guide covers the fundamentals this one assumes you already know.

Quick Start: Sulfur Farming Checklist
- Craft or buy at least a Level 2 heat-resistant armor set before entering Mount Obsidian — anything less and lava alone will drain your health fast
- Assign only Mining-suitability Pals to your gathering party so they don’t waste swings on trees and rocks you don’t need
- Head to West of Mount Obsidian (-744, -442) for the densest single cluster: 7 nodes tight together plus 4 more nearby
- If you’re not ready for heat gear yet, farm Astral Mountains instead — it holds 16% of all sulfur nodes and the danger there is cold, not fire
- Don’t bother chaining node runs faster than every 3 in-game days — that’s the default respawn window for mineral nodes, sulfur included
- Unlock the Sulfur Quarry at level 46 once you’re tired of the commute — it produces sulfur passively at any base, no volcano required
- Keep a Pierdon on Mining duty if you’d rather skip node-hunting altogether — it drops 4-5 guaranteed sulfur per kill on top of its day job
Where Sulfur Actually Comes From
Sulfur nodes are large, yellow-streaked rocks that stand out against normal stone — mostly clustered in the Volcano biome, with smaller amounts tucked into dungeon rooms. Across the whole Palpagos map there are 261 sulfur nodes total, and they are not spread evenly [9].
| Region | Node Count | Share of Total |
|---|---|---|
| Mount Obsidian | 156 | 60% |
| Astral Mountains | 42 | 16% |
| Bamboo Grove | 15 | 6% |
| Twilight Dunes | 15 | 6% |
| Sakurajima (DLC) | 15 | 6% |
| Sea Breeze Archipelago | 4 | 2% |
| Marsh Island / Verdant Brook | 1 each | <1% each |
The practical takeaway most guides skip: Mount Obsidian genuinely does hold more sulfur than every other region combined, but Astral Mountains is the only other region with a meaningful share — and it’s a cold zone, not a hot one. If heat resistance gear is the bottleneck slowing down your farming, Astral Mountains is a real alternative, not just a consolation prize.
The Regen Timer Most Guides Get Wrong
Search around and you’ll see “sulfur nodes respawn once a day” repeated constantly. That’s the tree and berry-bush respawn rate, not the mineral rate. Ore, stone, and sulfur nodes default to roughly a 3 in-game day respawn cycle — three times longer than trees [10]. If you’re planning farming runs assuming a daily reset, you’ll show up to a still-empty node twice out of three trips.
This is a server/world setting, not a hardcoded constant — it’s controlled by the “Gatherable Objects Respawn Interval” option, so a self-hosted or rented server can shorten it. On default settings, though, plan sulfur runs on a 3-day rotation, and route through two or three separate node clusters so you’re never standing around waiting on a respawn timer. One more thing that kills a farming route without you noticing: building over a node’s spawn point stops it from respawning at all, so don’t drop foundations or walls directly on top of a vein you want to keep mining.
Best Sulfur Farming Locations Ranked
Coordinates and ratings below are current as of the 1.0 map layout [6][8].
| Location | Node Density | Best For | Avoid If |
|---|---|---|---|
| West of Mount Obsidian (-744, -442) | 7 nodes clustered + 4 nearby — the single densest spot on the map | Late-game players who already have Level 2+ heat gear and a dedicated mining Pal | You don’t have heat-resistant armor yet, or need open build space (lava pools eat most of the flat ground) |
| South of the Foot of the Volcano (-341, -566) | Moderate — mixed ore and sulfur deposits | Mid-game players easing into the volcano biome | You’re under character level 25 — regional enemies run 25-35 |
| South of Cinnamoth Forest (-77, -310) | Light sulfur alongside its main ore/wood yield | Anyone who wants sulfur as a bonus while running a normal-climate resource loop | Sulfur is your primary goal — this is a secondary stop, not a dedicated farm |
| Astral Mountains | 42 of the map’s 261 nodes (16%) | Players who have cold-resistant gear ready before heat-resistant gear | You’re not equipped for a Level 2 cold zone either — bring a base heat *or* cold layer before committing to either biome |
West of Mount Obsidian wins on raw density, but it’s genuinely a late-game spot — the surrounding lava pools leave little flat ground to actually build a base on, so most players park a small mining outpost there rather than a full main base.
Building a Volcano Base: Heat Management, Explained
The reason volcano bases go wrong isn’t the lava itself — it’s players not understanding that heat resistance is tiered, not binary. Palworld runs a Level 1/2/3 resistance system: Heat/Cold Resistant Metal, Refined, or Pal Metal armor each grant Level 2 protection on their own, while undershirts stack an additional level on top (basic undershirts add Level 1, Uncommon and Rare variants add Level 2 or 3) [5].
Mount Obsidian itself is only a Level 2 hot zone, so armor alone clears it. The mechanism that trips people up: every Fire-element Pal in your active party raises the ambient heat by one full level. Bring a Fire Pal along to help mine or fight at Mount Obsidian, and you’re now facing Level 3 heat with only Level 2 gear — which is exactly when players report “heat resistant armor not working” on forums. It’s working; the Pal pushed the requirement past it.
Lava adds a second, sharper threshold on top of the ambient heat: below Level 3 resistance, direct lava contact deals full damage and sets you on fire. At Level 3, that same lava tick drops to far less damage. If your farming route runs anywhere near an actual lava pool — and West of Mount Obsidian’s cluster does — treat Level 3 as the real minimum, not Level 2, regardless of what the ambient zone rating says.

Use this as your gear check before committing to a base site:
- Farming without a Fire Pal, no lava contact planned: Level 2 heat resistance (any Heat Resistant Metal-tier armor) is enough
- Farming with a Fire Pal in your active party: bump to Level 3 — stack a Rare heat undershirt on top of your armor
- Base site borders a lava pool: Level 3 minimum, no exceptions — the full-damage threshold doesn’t care whether you’re mining or just walking past
- Building the actual base structure: place it on the flattest ground you can find away from active lava flow — see our full Palworld base building guide for foundation and defense placement basics that apply anywhere, volcano included
Best Mining Pals for Sulfur
Mining suitability level is what actually determines yield speed — a Lv1 miner chips at a node far slower than a Lv4. Mining Lv3 or better is the practical floor if you want a base assignment that keeps up with demand [9].
| Pal | Mining Level | Why It Works Here |
|---|---|---|
| Blazamut | Lv4 | Fire-immune — the only Pal on this list that ignores Mount Obsidian’s heat and lava damage entirely, making it the default pick for a volcano-based mining team |
| Astegon | Lv4 | Top-tier output, but not fire-immune — pair with your own Level 3 gear if assigning it to volcano duty |
| Anubis | Lv3 | Solid generalist base worker, viable the moment you clear the Mining Lv3 floor |
| Digtoise | Lv3 | The easiest of the four to acquire early, if you need a Lv3 miner before you’ve unlocked the others |
See our full best worker Pals ranking for how these stack up against other base-assignment picks outside of mining.
Skip the Volcano: Passive Sulfur Options
You don’t have to keep commuting to Mount Obsidian forever. Two routes let you sidestep the heat mechanic entirely.
The Sulfur Quarry (listed as “Sulfur Mine” on some wikis, added in the Sakurajima Summer Update) unlocks at character level 46, costs 5 Ancient Technology points, and requires defeating the PIDF Tower first [2][11]. Building it costs 70 Stone, 100 Sulfur, and 30 Paldium Fragments — steep for something meant to end your sulfur shortage, so plan to make one final volcano run to fund it. Once placed, it lets any Pal with Mining suitability generate sulfur passively at your base, with higher Mining levels producing faster — no world-node dependency at all.
Before level 46, Pierdon is the closest thing to a shortcut. It only has one useful work skill — Mining Lv5 — but its combat and capture drops include a guaranteed 4-5 Sulfur alongside 4-5 Ore and 4-5 Coal, every single kill, 100% of the time [7]. Farming a Pierdon spawn on a loop won’t out-produce a dedicated Mount Obsidian run, but it’s zero heat-gear investment and it feeds your smelter at the same time.
Priority by Player Type
| Player Type | Priority |
|---|---|
| New player | Farm South of Cinnamoth Forest or hunt Pierdon — both skip the heat-gear requirement entirely while you’re still gearing up |
| Casual player | Craft Level 2 heat armor, run West of Mount Obsidian on a 3-day rotation, and don’t overbuild — a small mining outpost beats a full base you’ll rarely visit |
| Hardcore / optimizer | Stack Level 3 resistance, run a Blazamut-led mining squad at the lava cluster, and treat the node math (156 nodes, 3-day cycle) as your actual throughput ceiling |
| Completionist | Unlock the Sulfur Quarry at 46 regardless of need — it’s the only way to stop depending on world nodes at all, and it frees up the Mount Obsidian trip for boss farming instead |
What All This Sulfur Is Actually For
Gunpowder is the main sink: the community wiki lists the recipe as 1 Sulfur plus 1 Charcoal at a High Quality Workbench (Technology Level 21) [3], though at least one major guide site lists it as 2 Charcoal to 1 Sulfur — we’re using the wiki figure since it matches the workbench’s own listed Workload value, but check your in-game recipe screen if the numbers look off after a patch. Beyond ammo, sulfur is also the core ingredient in your late-game medical items: Advanced Recovery Meds take 10 Sulfur, High Quality Recovery Meds take 5, and a single Revival Potion costs 20 [1]. If you’re stockpiling for a boss fight, the meds alone will eat through a farming run faster than gunpowder does.
FAQ
Is Mount Obsidian or Astral Mountains the better sulfur farm?
Mount Obsidian wins on raw volume — 60% of the map’s nodes against 16% — so if you’re set up for heat, go there. But “better” depends on which resistance gear you already have. If you’ve built out cold resistance for other reasons and haven’t touched heat gear yet, Astral Mountains’ 42 nodes are a legitimate primary farm, not just a fallback.
Do I really need to wait 3 days between sulfur runs?
Only if you’re farming a single cluster. The 3-day mineral respawn is a per-node timer, not a global cooldown, so running a rotation across two or three separate node clusters (say, West of Mount Obsidian one day, South of the Foot of the Volcano the next) keeps you mining every session without ever standing over an empty node.
Does a Fire Pal actually make Mount Obsidian more dangerous?
Yes, and it’s not a rumor — Fire-element Pals raise the ambient heat level by one, turning Mount Obsidian’s base Level 2 zone into an effective Level 3 the moment that Pal is in your active party. If you’re bringing a Fire Pal for combat or work assignments, gear up for Level 3 heat resistance, not Level 2, or you’ll take damage you weren’t expecting.
