Then version 1.011 landed and introduced 8-star tempered variants of Gore Magala, Rey Dau, Uth Duna, Nu Udra, and Jin Dahaad — and changed three things that most patch note summaries buried in bullet points. The health went up, yes. But the wound resistance mechanic and the multiplayer HP formula both changed in ways that break how most hunters were farming.

- Reach HR 41 — complete the HR 40 mission “What Lies Ahead” first. 8-star tempered hunts do not appear in your quest board until then.
- Pick Rey Dau first — it is the most accessible of the five and gives you a clean look at how 8-star difficulty feels without Gore Magala’s outlier challenge.
- Target Tempered Wounds aggressively — the grey scar patches on 8-star variants take more hits to open than on their 7-star versions. Prioritize them anyway; Wyverian Bloodstones are your primary currency for the material loop.
- Stack Investigation Quests with two or more tempered monsters — these give bonus reward slots, including Wyvern Gems and rare crafting materials you will not see as reliably in single-monster hunts.
- Convert Bloodstones at the Sild Melding Pot — Wyverian Bloodstones trade into Weapon Shards and decorations. This is the loop that funds your Artian weapon upgrades.
Where 8-Star Fits in the Tempered Tier System
Tempered monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds are organized into three tiers, and the tier determines what materials you get, not just how hard the fight is.

The important detail: 8-star is still Tier 3. You get Ancient Weapon Fragments and Hunter Symbol III from both 7-star and 8-star Tier 3 hunts. What 8-star changes is not the material tier — it is the rate at which you farm it, because the higher fight difficulty means more opportunities to break wounds (and more Wyverian Bloodstones) per successful run, but only if you can sustain damage pressure through the harder health pool and wound resistance.
Think of 7-star and 8-star as two difficulty lanes inside the same material pool. Casual players can stay in the 7-star lane and get the same item types. Hunters optimizing their farming rate will want to push 8-star once they can clear it efficiently. Three Changes That Make 8-Star Harder Than 7-Star
The patch notes for version 1.011 listed three specific adjustments for 8-star tempered variants. Each one has a different implication for how you should approach the fight.
1. Increased Health Pool
8-star tempered versions of all five monsters have more total health than their 7-star counterparts. Capcom did not publish exact multipliers in the public patch notes, but community testing across multiple weapons and difficulty comparisons puts the difference as meaningfully noticeable — not just a marginal bump. Fights that took 8–10 minutes at 7-star are running 12–15 minutes at 8-star under comparable build conditions for most hunters.
The practical implication: bring your best damage build, not your farming shortcut build. If you have been running a comfort setup tuned for 7-star clears, the extended fight time at 8-star will expose its weaknesses.
2. Resistance to Wounding
This is the mechanical change that most patch note summaries skipped. At 7-star, the grey scar patches on tempered monsters open into full Tempered Wounds at a known attack threshold. At 8-star, that threshold is higher — wounds take longer to open, which means you get fewer opportunities to land Focus Strikes and fewer Wyverian Bloodstones per run if you are not actively concentrating fire on the wound locations.

The higher wound threshold makes opportunistic wound-breaking much less reliable than it was at 7-star.
3. Adjusted Multiplayer Scaling
Multiplayer HP scaling in Monster Hunter Wilds already applies a formula that increases monster health based on the number of hunters in the quest. The 1.011 patch tweaked how this formula applies at 8-star, making the scaling steeper for coordinated groups than it was at 7-star.
What this means in practice: a 4-player 8-star run will feel considerably harder than 4 times the solo experience. If your group was clearing 7-star comfortably in multiplayer, expect to need better coordination and communication on wound targeting before 8-star clicks. The Five New 8-Star Monsters: Who to Target First
All five monsters added in version 1.011 are available at HR 41, but they are not equivalent farming targets. Here is how they differ in practice.
Tempered Rey Dau
The most accessible entry point for 8-star. Rey Dau’s attack patterns are well-documented after months of 7-star farming, and the 8-star version adds health and wound resistance without introducing new moves. Note: Rey Dau is included in the patch’s increased tempered spawn rate. You will see it appear more often in Field Surveys and Investigation Quests after 1.011.
Tempered Gore Magala
The outlier. The director of Monster Hunter Wilds explicitly flagged in pre-release notes that 8-star Tempered Gore Magala “will be hard even for experienced players.” Gore Magala’s Frenzy virus mechanic — which reduces your natural recovery and requires you to build up Affliction resistance or risk losing access to your wound-targeting windows — layers with the 8-star wound resistance in a way that makes sustained offense genuinely difficult.
The reward for farming Gore Magala efficiently is access to its specific parts, which are useful for builds targeting Abnormal Status interactions. But do not start your 8-star journey here. Clear Rey Dau or Jin Dahaad first to understand the health pool difference before committing to Gore Magala’s more demanding fight.
Tempered Nu Udra and Jin Dahaad
Mid-tier challenge between Rey Dau and Gore Magala. Jin Dahaad is the better farming target of the two for general Tier 3 material accumulation. Nu Udra’s underwater-adjacent movement patterns make wound targeting harder than on the other three, which reduces your per-run Bloodstone yield if you are not practiced with it.
Tempered Uth Duna
Worth a specific callout for one patch note detail that most guides missed: the 1.011 update increased the spawn rate of all tempered monsters in Field Surveys and Investigation Quests — except Uth Duna. If you are farming Investigation Quests hoping to see Uth Duna frequently, that did not change. Plan your farming rotations around the other four if Quest availability matters to your schedule.
Uth Duna is still available and hunted via the same methods as before. It is just not more common after 1.011.
Decision Tree: Which Monster to Hunt
If you are farming for specific parts → hunt the target monster directly in dedicated Investigation Quests.
If you are farming for Ancient Weapon Fragments and Bloodstones → pick the monster you clear fastest, not the hardest one.
If you need Investigation Quests with two tempered monsters for bonus rewards → Gore Magala and Arkveld investigation stacks are the community-preferred pairing for extra reward slots.
The Trade-Up Loop: How Materials Convert to Artian Gear
The “tempered material trade-up system” is not a formal game menu — it is a three-step circuit that connects your hunts to your gear upgrades.
Step 1 — Hunt and break wounds. Every time you open a Tempered Wound with a Focus Strike, the monster drops Wyverian Bloodstones. These come in four sizes: Shards, Small, Large, and Chunk. Higher-tier monsters drop larger Bloodstones more reliably.
Step 2 — Convert at the Sild Melding Pot. Take your Wyverian Bloodstones to the Melding Pot in Sild village. Bloodstones trade into Weapon Shards (the crafting ingredient for Artian weapons) and into decorations. The Shard type you receive scales with the Bloodstone size — Chunks and Large Bloodstones give Rusted or Ancient Weapon Shards depending on the monster’s tier.
Step 3 — Craft and upgrade Artian weapons. Weapon Shards combine with monster parts to build Artian weapons, which are among the strongest weapons available in the current endgame. The key multiplier here: if you are farming Arkveld in addition to the 8-star targets, its parts exchange for Oricalcite, which provides the most Artian upgrade points per craft compared to other monster part exchanges. The 8-star tempered five do not have a comparable Oricalcite exchange, so Arkveld farming alongside your 8-star rotations is the optimal strategy for hunters upgrading multiple Artian weapons simultaneously.

Multiplayer Scaling: What the 1.011 Patch Actually Changed
Monster Hunter Wilds applies a multiplier to monster health when additional players join a quest. At 7-star tempered, this scaling was tuned so that organized groups could clear hunts faster than solo because the damage increase from four weapons outpaced the HP multiplier.
At 8-star, the multiplier is steeper. Community testing suggests that 4-player 8-star clears can feel harder than 4-player 7-star clears, not just because of the higher base health, but because the scaling formula weights the co-op multiplier more aggressively. Fewer hunters per quest means less multiplied health, which is why 2-player 8-star is sometimes faster than 4-player for practiced groups: half the HP multiplier, still coordinated wound-breaking, cleaner kill times.
The practical recommendation from the 1.011 community: run 8-star with two or three hunters rather than always filling the lobby to four, unless all four players are practiced at wound-break coordination. Do 8-star tempered monsters drop different materials than 7-star?
No — both are Tier 3 and drop the same material types: Ancient Weapon Fragments and Hunter Symbol III. The difference is the yield rate. The harder fight means a higher chance of landing more wound breaks per run, which increases your Wyverian Bloodstone output if you are managing wounds effectively. The item categories are identical; the farming efficiency is not.
Is the 8-star difficulty mandatory to progress?
No. 7-star Tempered runs at the same five monsters still drop Tier 3 materials. If you are gearing up for the first time, 7-star is a completely valid farming path. 8-star matters most when you are trying to maximize the speed of your material accumulation, or when you specifically want the increased reward money from 8-star Investigation Quests and Field Surveys.
Why does Gore Magala feel so much harder than the other four?
The Frenzy virus mechanic compounds with 8-star wound resistance. Frenzy reduces your recovery rate, which limits how aggressively you can stay on wound locations. Since wound-breaking is how you generate Bloodstones, Frenzy mechanically reduces your farming efficiency in addition to the survival pressure it applies. Build Frenzy resistance via armor or skills before farming 8-star Gore Magala consistently.
When should I start running 8-star instead of 7-star?
When you can break at least 2 wounds consistently on a 7-star Tempered run and your clears are under 12 minutes solo. That combination means your damage and wound-break timing are good enough that the 8-star HP increase will not double your hunt time — which is the threshold where 8-star becomes a meaningful efficiency upgrade over 7-star rather than just a longer, harder version of the same reward pool.
