Every Gore Magala Material in MHW Wilds: Drop Rates by Body Part, Carve vs. Capture Compared

Capturing Gore Magala gives you zero chance at Feeler+ from the base reward pool. Killing it with a severed tail roughly doubles your Nyctgem rate compared to capturing. Frenzy Crystal doesn’t care either way — it only drops from wound destruction. Most guides hand you a table and leave you to figure out the rest.

This guide breaks down all nine Gore Magala materials by source, shows the exact drop percentages for each farming method, and tells you which approach to use based on what you’re after. Drop rates sourced from the Fextralife MHW Wilds wiki and Game8. Verified as of Title Update 5 (Ver. 1.021, February 2026).

Quick Start Checklist

  1. Reach High Rank — Gore Magala has no Low Rank version whatsoever
  2. Accept “Shrouded in Black” (assignment, one-time) or “Misty Depths” (repeatable optional quest)
  3. Target the antenna with a blunt weapon during the Frenzy phase for a guaranteed Feeler+
  4. Sever the tail before killing if you need Nyctgem — tail carve is 7% vs body carve at 4%
  5. Attack the same body part repeatedly until a wound fires — that is the only way to get Frenzy Crystal
  6. Check the target rewards screen after every hunt — Certificate S only appears here, never in the carve pool

All Gore Magala Materials

Gore Magala drops nine distinct materials in MHW Wilds. Each comes from a specific source — and some sources are mutually exclusive depending on whether you kill or capture.

Gore Magala NyctgemR8Tail carve (7%) / body carve (4%)High-tier armor, gems
Frenzy CrystalR7Wound destruction only (24%)All Rarity 8 Gore weapons, Sanity Charm II

Wing+ and Feeler+ are effectively guaranteed through part breaks — the stat that matters is how you break those parts efficiently. Nyctgem and Frenzy Crystal are the bottleneck materials in almost every crafting build, so they get the most detailed treatment below.

Drop Rate Tables by Body Part

Three separate pools control what you actually pick up: body carves after the kill, the severed tail carve, and wound destruction during the fight. These pools are independent, and only the last one — wound destruction — requires active targeting rather than passive farm.

Body Carve Pool (3 rolls after kill)

MaterialDrop Rate (per roll)
Gore Magala Scale+24%
Gore Magala Carapace21%
Gore Magala Wing+13%
Gore Magala Feeler+11%
Gore Magala Tail11%
Gore Magala Ripclaw+16%
Gore Magala Nyctgem4%

Severed Tail Carve Pool (1 roll — requires tail sever)

MaterialDrop Rate
Gore Magala Tail93%
Gore Magala Nyctgem7%

The tail carve is the single most efficient source of the Tail material and the highest single-roll Nyctgem chance in the game. Severing the tail costs roughly 90 seconds of focused cutting-weapon strikes — it is almost always worth it.

Part Break Rewards (one-time per fight)

PartRewardDrop Rate
Left WingGore Magala Wing+100%
Right WingGore Magala Wing+100%
Antenna (Feelers)Gore Magala Feeler+100%

Wound Destruction Drops (trigger by destroying wounds mid-fight)

MaterialDrop Rate (per wound destroyed)
Gore Magala Scale+38%
Gore Magala Carapace38%
Frenzy Crystal24%

Wound destruction is the only way to get Frenzy Crystal — it does not appear in the carve pool or target rewards. The 24% rate per wound means a typical hunt that fully wounds the monster will yield at least one Frenzy Crystal if you destroy the wounds consistently.

Carve vs. Capture: Compared Per Material

Capturing Gore Magala gives you 3 draws from the target reward pool. Killing it gives you 3 draws from the body carve pool — plus one draw from the severed tail pool if you cut the tail first. These two pools are similar, but not identical, and for a few materials the difference is significant.

The key mechanic: a severed tail only enters the carve pool if you kill the monster and carve the tail yourself. Capturing, even after severing the tail, does not grant the 93% tail carve roll.

MaterialKill + Sever Tail

Capture
(3 target reward draws)
Verdict
Nyctgem~19 per 100 hunts*~9 per 100 huntsKill wins (2x rate)
Feeler+33% from carves or 100% from antenna break0% from rewards or 100% from antenna breakKill wins; antenna break overrides both
Tail93% from tail carve33% from target rewardsKill + sever wins decisively
Ripclaw+~48% expected (3 × 16%)~63% expected (3 × 21%)Capture slight edge
Scale+~72% expected (3 × 24%)~66% expected (3 × 22%)Kill slight edge; wounds add 38%
Carapace~63% expected (3 × 21%)~66% expected (3 × 22%)Near equal; wounds add 38%
Certificate S0%~24% expected (3 × 8%)Capture only
Frenzy Crystal0%0%Wound destruction only

*Expected count per 100 hunts calculated as sum of independent roll probabilities: 3 × 4% body + 1 × 7% tail = 19.

Takeaway for most players: kill Gore Magala (don’t capture) and always sever the tail. The gains on Nyctgem and Feeler+ outweigh the marginal advantage capture offers on Ripclaw+, and the Tail material difference is not even close.

The one exception: if you only need Certificate S for decoration crafting, capture is the only option — it genuinely does not appear in the carve pool.

How to Break Each Part Efficiently

Breaking the right parts at the right time cuts your farming runs in half. Here is the practical sequence for a clean part-break run.

Antenna (Feelers) — 100% Feeler+ Guaranteed

The feelers only become targetable once Gore Magala enters its Frenzy phase, visually indicated by glowing purple antenna horns. The feelers count as a head hitzone, so blunt weapons — Hammer and Hunting Horn specifically — deal the highest stagger accumulation and break the part fastest. Use Focus Mode to create an Open Wound on the head first, then commit burst damage to the wound before it closes. Shock Traps and Pitfall Traps extend the window considerably in solo runs. Fire element damage is the most effective against the antenna hitzone, so a Fire Hammer is the optimal tool [7].

Wings — 100% Wing+ per Wing

Break both wings for two guaranteed Wing+ drops. Wings have no special phase requirement — strike them repeatedly from the side during any part of the fight. Any weapon works, but fast multi-hit weapons (Dual Blades, Insect Glaive) accumulate break damage more quickly. Breaking both wings adds two Wing+ to your total, making this a low-effort, high-value part of every run.

Tail — The Critical Sever for 93% Tail Carve

The tail sever is the single biggest efficiency decision in any Gore Magala materials run. Cutting weapons are required to sever tails in MHW Wilds — Long Sword, Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, or targeted Bow shots. Aim specifically at the tail during the first half of the fight before spending your Focus Mode charges. Once the sever notification fires, the tail pools its carve at 93% Tail / 7% Nyctgem. Leave the tail on the ground; it remains carveable after the hunt ends.

Wounds — Frenzy Crystal Farming

Strike the same body part with repeated, heavy hits until the wound animation triggers — then immediately destroy that wound before it regenerates. Gore Magala opens wounds on the head and torso most frequently. Any weapon type can destroy wounds; the goal is concentration of damage on one spot, so slower, harder-hitting weapons (Great Sword, Hammer, Switch Axe) create and destroy wounds more reliably per minute. Each destroyed wound gives a 38% chance at Scale+/Carapace and 24% at Frenzy Crystal [6].

Farming Priority: What to Do Based on What You Need

Frenzy CrystalWound destructionNot in carve or capture pools; attack same body part, then destroy the wound
Scale+ / CarapaceKill + create woundsWound destruction adds 38% per wound on top of body carve rates

By Player Type

Player TypePriority
Casual — building one setBreak antenna each run. Sever tail if you have a cutting weapon equipped. Everything else will accumulate naturally.
Efficient farmer — needs Nyctgem fastKill (do not capture), sever tail, carve all 3 body slots + tail. Farm Investigations for guaranteed Nyctgem when available.
Completionist — needs every materialKill, sever tail, break both wings, break antenna (Frenzy phase), destroy all wounds for Frenzy Crystal. Repeat “Misty Depths” until Certificate S drops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does capturing Gore Magala give more materials than killing it?

No — and for two key materials, capturing is worse. Feeler+ has a 0% rate in the target reward pool, so capturing gives you no carve-based chance at it (antenna break still works regardless). Nyctgem rates are roughly double when you kill and sever the tail compared to capturing. The only material exclusive to capture is Certificate S, which doesn’t appear in the carve pool at all.

What is the fastest way to farm Nyctgem in MHW Wilds?

Two routes: kill Gore Magala, sever the tail, and carve everything (19 expected Nyctgems per 100 hunts), or find an environmental Gore Magala encounter on the map, which drops a guaranteed Nyctgem. Save that encounter as an Investigation and repeat it until it expires. The Investigation route is faster per-hour once you have one active [10].
