Zone 4 is where Hytale’s endgame lives. The Devastated Lands is an ash-covered volcanic continent separated from the rest of Orbis by open ocean — and it contains the current ceiling for gear progression in Early Access. Adamantite, the top craftable armour tier, is here. So are two of the game’s hardest bosses, a hidden underground jungle running four layers deep, and bioluminescent dinosaurs that hunt in the dark.
This guide is written for players who have cleared Zone 3 and are ready to cross the ocean. Zones 5 and 6 exist in Hytale’s lore but are not accessible in current EA — Zone 4 is your endgame destination. Here is everything you need to reach it, survive it, and gear up through it.
Gear Check: What to Bring Before You Cross
The stated minimum to enter Zone 4 is Iron-tier gear. In practice this is a death sentence. The recommended minimum is Cobalt or Thorium armour and weapons — both craftable in Zone 3. Cobalt is offence-oriented; Thorium offers poison resistance, which matters less in Zone 4 than raw combat stats. Either will get you through early Zone 4 surface content.
The single most important preparation before crossing is upgrading to the Tier 3 Archinist’s Workbench. Without it you cannot craft Adamantite gear once you find the ore. The upgrade requires:
- 25× Thorium Bars
- 25× Cobalt Bars
- 20× Fire Essences
- 40× Ice Essences
- 100× Void Essences
This is a significant materials gate — gather everything in Zone 3 before you leave. Arriving in Zone 4 without the Tier 3 workbench means you can mine Adamantite but cannot smelt or craft it into gear.
Also pack: water buckets (to extinguish Ember Golem fire patches during the boss fight), torches (the underground jungle is near-total darkness), stamina-recovery food, and the materials to set up a teleporter outpost at your Zone 4 base camp on arrival. How to Reach the Devastated Lands
The Devastated Lands is geographically isolated — separated from Zones 1–3 by open ocean. There is no completion gate or portal requirement; any player can sail there at any gear level. Cross by raft or boat, navigate to the Devastated Lands coastline, and set a teleporter waypoint immediately on arrival.
On the map, look for circular orange markers in the Devastated Lands area. These indicate underground cave entrances and boss structures. Volcanic mountain formations near the coast mark the boundary between the Charred Woodlands and the volcanic interior. That terrain is your landmark for orienting to Zone 4’s major sub-regions.
Surface Biomes
Zone 4’s surface splits into several distinct biomes. The visual palette across all of them is consistently blacks, reds, and deep oranges — ash-dimmed sky, cracked ground, lava rivers, and charred tree remnants.

Fire Mechanics and Environmental Hazards
Zone 4 runs on a fire-damage model that players from earlier zones are not prepared for.
Lava deals continuous damage on contact. There is no immunity window — step in lava and you keep taking damage every tick. Wooden structures adjacent to lava can catch fire, so place your Zone 4 outpost away from lava pools.
Zone 4 mobs are fire-immune. The Emberwulf, Ember Golem, and Magma Rhino Toad all resist fire damage completely. Do not use fire-based weapons or abilities against them — switch to physical builds for the entire zone.
There is no vanilla fire resistance until you finish the zone’s gear grind. The Adamantite full armour set grants +15% fire resistance as a set bonus — but you have to farm Zone 4 to unlock that protection. Until then, avoid lava, respect fire-immune mobs, and rely on blocking and movement over elemental damage.
A note on burn damage: the Burn debuff from fire attacks was reduced in Update 1, but damage from lava itself was left unchanged. Environmental lava contact is the bigger threat throughout your Zone 4 progression.

Zone 4 Bosses
Zone 4 has two major bosses with completely different fight styles. The Ember Golem is a methodical surface encounter that rewards patience. Ember Golem
Location: Charred Woodlands, Zone 4 surface. Spawns at a Forgotten Temple gateway — look for the gateway portal icon on your map. Spawn location is randomised per world seed within the biome. The arena may include a stone platform surrounded by lava, approached through the Charred Woodlands.
Attacks:
- Heavy melee slams — blockable with shield
- Spinning Attack — blockable, with a clear telegraph before activation
- Burns ground patches at attack points — these persist and deal lava-level continuous damage
Strategy: The Ember Golem is slow — use that. Ranged players (shortbow or crossbow) can kite it continuously, repositioning as fire patches accumulate. Melee players: block the Spinning Attack, counterattack during recovery, reposition off the fire patches. Bring a water bucket and pour it on ground patches to extinguish them instantly and recover safe footing. The fight follows the same rhythm as the Zone 1 Earthen Golem — block, counterattack, reposition. Veterans of that encounter will adapt quickly.
Drops: Red Crystal Shards, Cindercloth Scraps, Fire Essences, Firesteel Ingots.
Cave Rex
Location: Forgotten Jungle (Layer 4, the deepest underground layer). Look for circular orange markers on your surface map in the Devastated Lands — cave openings at the base of volcanic mountains lead into the underground jungle system. Navigate through all four layers to reach the Forgotten Jungle.
Stats: 400 HP. Can kill unprepared players in 2–3 unblocked hits. The highest HP of any vanilla EA boss.
Attacks:
- Bite: Forward lunge and jaw snap. Brief recovery window after the lunge — this is your counterattack window.
- Bite Toss: Grabs the player with its jaws and flings them. Generates fall damage and displacement — extremely dangerous near cave walls and elevated ledges.
Strategy: Go in with Cobalt or Adamantite gear at minimum — this is not a fight for early Zone 4 gear. Shield-block the Bite lunge, counterattack during the recovery window, then back out. Circle the rex: staying directly in front means you eat Bite Toss. Stamina management is the fight’s core mechanical challenge — blocking every hit drains stamina fast, and a stamina break means an unblocked Bite Toss into a cave wall. Use weapon abilities aggressively; the Cave Rex’s 400 HP means your ability charge bar fills quickly. Watch the cave ceiling — Pterodactyls patrol the upper layers and may dive on you mid-fight. Stock torches: the Forgotten Jungle is near-dark.
Drops: Heavy Hide, Raw Wildmeat.
The Underground Jungle: Four Layers Deep
Beneath Zone 4’s volcanic surface is a complete second ecosystem — an underground jungle running vertically through four distinct layers. Added in Update 1, this biome contains the Cave Rex, most of Hytale’s dinosaur roster, and the best Heavy Hide farming in the game.

The tonal contrast with the surface is total. Zone 4’s surface is open, ash-grey, fire-lit under a dim sky. The underground is humid, primeval, and dark — lit only by bioluminescent organisms. Dinosaurs in the Forgotten Jungle have modified fin-ray appendages (illicium) topped with a glowing lure organ (esca), structurally similar to deep-sea anglerfish. This is both a visual identifier in darkness and, in lore, a hunting mechanism. A bobbing light in a dark passage means something is hunting you.

For Heavy Hide farming — required for Adamantite armour crafting — Trillodon in Layer 3 is the most efficient source. They are passive and drop large quantities per kill, making them far less hazardous to farm than Cave Raptors or the Cave Rex.
Adamantite: Where to Find It and What to Craft
Adamantite is Zone 4’s primary progression ore and the current vanilla EA gear ceiling. It spawns in two locations:
- Surface: The Cinder Wastes biome is the best surface farming location. Ore nodes appear in rocky outcroppings across the open wasteland.
- Underground: Layers 1–2 (Devastated Caves and Transition Caves) contain concentrated Adamantite nodes in the cave walls — denser per area than surface deposits.
You need a minimum Cobalt or Thorium Pickaxe to mine Adamantite. Anything below that tier will not break the node.

Full set total: 77 Adamantite Ingots + 24 Heavy Leather + 20 Cindercloth Scraps.
Full set bonus: +15% fire resistance, +10% increased threat generation, +2 HP per second regeneration during combat.
Note that the fire resistance bonus only activates with all four pieces equipped. Until the full set is complete, you have zero fire resistance in vanilla EA. The set bonus rewards committing to full Adamantite over mixing tiers from different zones.
Adamantite Sword: 11 Adamantite Ingots + 4 Heavy Leather + 3 Cindercloth Scraps.
Beyond Adamantite: Mithril and the Current EA Ceiling
Mithril is the material tier above Adamantite and exists in vanilla EA. It is found in Zone 4’s volcanic regions — primarily in deep cave sections of the Volcanic Peaks biome — and also drops from a giant skeleton boss found within Zone 4. Crafting Mithril gear requires the Tier 3 workbench and schematics from that boss encounter.
In vanilla EA, Mithril crafting exists but the full post-Adamantite content path (Swamp Dungeon, Void Realm boss chain) requires the Endgame & QoL mod by Lewaii (296,000+ CurseForge downloads). That mod unlocks the complete Mithril → Onyxium → Prisma progression ladder, the Dragon Frost boss fight, and the subsequent dungeon chain. Zones 5 and 6 are not accessible in current EA. The vanilla ceiling is Adamantite with Mithril as a partial step above it. Everything beyond that requires mods.
Zone 4 Survival Tips
- Set up your teleporter network before going underground. Place waypoints at your Zone 4 base camp, the Charred Woodlands near the Ember Golem’s Forgotten Temple, and the cave entrance to the underground jungle. The Forgotten Jungle is disorienting and dangerous to exit without fast travel. See the Hytale Teleporter Guide for setup steps.
- Complete the Tier 3 workbench upgrade before crossing the ocean. Having the upgrade done on arrival means you can start crafting gear from the first Adamantite you mine.
- Trillodon is your Heavy Hide farm. You need 24 Heavy Leather for the full Adamantite set. Trillodon in Layer 3 are passive and drop large quantities. Farm them, not Raptors.
- Orange map markers are your navigation system. Boss locations and underground cave entrances both appear as orange circular markers on the surface map. Use them to plan your route before descending.
- Never use fire attacks against Zone 4 native mobs. Emberwulf, Ember Golem, Magma Rhino Toad — all immune to fire damage. Physical builds only.
- Water bucket for the Ember Golem. Ground fire patches accumulate quickly and restrict your movement. One water pour clears a patch and resets the safe zone instantly.
