Ghost of Yōtei Beginner’s Guide: Which of the 5 Weapons Beats Which Enemy, What the Wolf Actually Does, and the PC Port Bloomberg Says Was Dropped

Ghost of Yōtei is a PlayStation 5 game, and the reporting says it will stay one: Kotaku relayed Bloomberg’s March 2026 report that plans for a PC port were dropped. Inside the game, each of the five melee weapons counters one enemy type, but that match is a bonus, not a gate. Co-director Nate Fox told IGN that the game “will not hurt you” if you stick to one blade (GamesRadar).

Two claims that circulate about this game do not hold up. Yōtei has no stance system, because Sucker Punch replaced Tsushima’s stances with swappable weapons, and the wrong weapon does not punish you; it makes your attacks less effective (Game Rant). Below you get a seven-step first-hours checklist, a table of where each weapon unlocks and what it counters, the stagger mechanism that explains why the match matters, what the wolf really does, and the PC question with dates.

Scope and version: this hub covers the fundamentals. Bosses, armor, Legends and the new expansion are separate topics, and each future guide will link back here. We checked the guides below against sources published up to the Complete Edition and patch 2.0 launch on 1 October 2026, and ran our own Steam and Metacritic checks on 19 October 2026. We did not play the game on PS5 for this piece, and we found no official Sucker Punch matchup table, so the pairings are the consensus of the guides we read, with disagreements flagged. Confirm them in game.

Quick Start: Your First Hours in Seven Steps

Seven habits cover most of what trips up a new player: set a forgiving difficulty, learn the glint colors, keep the starter katana, collect each region’s weapon, read what enemies hold, spend Spirit and start the wolf dens.

  1. Set the difficulty first. There are five presets (Casual, Easy, Medium, Hard, Lethal) plus Custom, and you can change them any time from the menu (Space4Games). Casual is the easiest, and no trophy depends on difficulty (PowerPyx). Our pick for a first run is Easy: enemies can take more hits but do not require perfect reactions.
  2. Learn the glint code. A blue-white glint means you can parry by pressing L1 just before the hit; yellow and red glints cannot be parried, so you dodge them (Deltia’s parry guide).
  3. Keep the Wolf Blade as your default. It is the starting katana, and you upgrade it at the forge in your home, which unlocks early in the game (PowerPyx).
  4. Collect each region’s weapon as you reach it. Dual Katana in Yotei Grasslands, Yari in Ishikari Plain, Odachi in Tokachi Range and Kusarigama in Teshio Ridge (Push Square). Inverse recommends doing these quests early, and you can clear each area’s weapon quest without advancing the story much.
  5. Read what the enemy is holding, then swap. You can switch weapons in the middle of a fight, and the weapon wheel sits in the bottom-right corner (Game Rant). The next section says which weapon answers which enemy.
  6. Spend Spirit on healing. Spirit works like Tsushima’s Resolve and can heal you or power strong moves (Wikipedia). A Perfect Parry, a parry on the last possible moment, slows time and earns a moderate amount of it (Deltia’s).
  7. Complete the first two wolf dens. Two completed dens let you buy the Wolf Howl and Wolf Strike Summon skills (PowerPyx). The wolf section below explains what the wolf will and will not do.

The Five Weapons and the Enemy Each One Counters

Each weapon has one job: the Katana beats sword users, the Dual Katana beats spear and polearm users, the Yari beats sickle and kusarigama users, the Kusarigama beats shields and the Odachi beats Brutes. The table adds where each one unlocks, so you can plan the route.

WeaponWhere you get itCountersWhy it works
Katana (Wolf Blade)Starting weaponEnemies with swordsAll-rounder: a solid option against any enemy type
Dual KatanaRevenge Quest “The Way of Dual Katana”, Yotei GrasslandsSpear and polearm usersA fast flurry of strikes against a long weapon
YariSensei Quest “The Way of the Yari”, Modaiwa Island, Ishikari PlainSickle users: kusarigama and dual kamaLong reach
KusarigamaSensei Quest “The Way of the Kusarigama”, northern Teshio RidgeShield usersHeavy hits smash through shields; light blade attacks then finish
OdachiRevenge Quest tied to the Saito Brothers, Tokachi RangeBrutes, the large enemiesA blade made for the largest opponents

Unlock locations come from Push Square’s weapon list; the counters come from Shacknews’ alignment table, Deltia’s Gaming and Game Rant, which agree on every pairing. The wording differs in two places. Shacknews and Game Rant say the Yari counters “Sickles”, while Deltia’s and allthings.how spell that out as kusarigama and dual kama users, and allthings.how adds knives. Game Rant says the Dual Katana counters polearms, while Deltia’s says spear and polearm users. We use the wider wording, and none of these guides gives a numeric damage bonus.

What replaced the stances

If you played Ghost of Tsushima, the closest thing to its stance system is now the weapon in your hand. Nate Fox said the weapons are “more than a simple visual replacement” and that combat now has “a lot more layers to create a more improvisational feel” (Insider Gaming). One of those layers is the disarm: attacks can make you or an enemy drop a weapon, and you can pick up a dropped weapon and throw it (Wikipedia). So your loadout is not fixed for a whole fight, and neither is the enemy’s.

Why the match matters: the stagger meter

The match is about stagger, not raw damage. Enemies have a stagger meter, and filling it breaks their defensive stance so you can finish them fast (Deltia’s parry guide). When you are “weapon aligned”, your Heavy Attacks deal much more stagger damage and interrupt enemy attack sequences, while a misaligned attack still deals damage but is less effective (Game Rant). So the Kusarigama against a shield is the clearest case: its heavy hit smashes the guard, and you finish with the blade’s light attacks (Shacknews).

Armor can build on this. Gamepressure says the Armor of the Undying heals you when you stagger enemies, speeds stagger buildup from focused attacks and eases Perfect Parries and Perfect Dodges, but only while you use the right weapon. If you play Hard or Lethal, that is a reason to swap constantly.

What the game tells you, and what it doesn’t

“Weapon aligned” is a real in-game term, because it shows up on the Armor of the Undying (Deltia’s). Game Rant says the term “isn’t really explained all that well by the game’s systems”, and Inverse says the game explains weapon matchups only “at some point”. None of the guides we read describes an on-screen icon for alignment, so we will not tell you there is one. The practical cue is in the fight: allthings.how says that if enemies “stonewall” your strikes you are likely misaligned, so swap and test their guard again.

Our three-second read (our rule of thumb, not an official one):

  1. Look at the hands, not the armor: the weapon an enemy carries names its type.
  2. Match the enemy that is hardest to handle with the Wolf Blade. A Brute’s red-glint attacks cannot be parried (Game Rant), and a shield holder blocks your strikes.
  3. If you are unsure, go back to the Wolf Blade. It works against everything (Shacknews), and you can parry blue-glint attacks while you read the next group.

When the weapon is wrong: a quick diagnosis

Most early frustration with the combat comes from five situations, and each has a different fix. The table maps what you see to the likely cause and the swap or habit that fixes it.

What you seeLikely causeFix
Your strikes keep getting blocked or bounce offA misaligned weapon; allthings.how calls this being “stonewalled”Swap to the counter, and mix heavy and light attacks to build stagger (Shacknews)
A shield holder stays untouchableShields are the Kusarigama’s listed counter, so other weapons have to work around themHeavy Kusarigama hit to smash the guard, then light blade attacks
A large enemy ignores your parriesBrute attacks with a red glint cannot be parried (Game Rant)Dodge them, and bring the Odachi
You take heavy damage right after a parryThe attack had a yellow or red glint (Deltia’s)Dodge those; parry only blue-white glints
Your weapon is suddenly goneYou were disarmed; attacks can make you or an enemy drop a weapon (Wikipedia)Pick up a dropped weapon and keep fighting; you can also throw it

The pattern behind the table is that every fix is a swap or a dodge, never a longer combo. That fits how the game is built: a counter system that rewards reading the enemy before you commit.

Which Weapon Should You Care About? By Player Type

New players should not memorize the whole table. They should stay on one weapon until parrying is a habit, while completionists and hardcore players need all five.

Player typeWhat to doWhy
New playerStay on the Wolf Blade on Casual or Easy until blue-glint parries are a habit, then add one weapon at a time. The game “will not hurt you” for sticking to one weapon, and the Wolf Blade is a solid option against every type.
Casual playerSwap only for shields (Kusarigama) and Brutes (Odachi). Our judgement: those are the matchups where the Wolf Blade is stonewalled or faces attacks you cannot parry. No source measures it.
Hardcore playerSwap on every encounter on Hard, Lethal or Custom, and build around Armor of the Undying.Fox calls switching “the most efficient way to play”. Custom lets you tune enemy strength, parry windows and healing efficiency (Space4Games).
CompletionistCollect all five melee weapons for the “Tools of a Warrior” trophy and do the weapon quests region by region.Nothing is missable and everything stays open after the story; the Platinum takes about 50 to 70 hours and about 85% completion (PowerPyx).

If you rushed the story and skipped a weapon quest: you have not lost it. PowerPyx says nothing is missable and all side content stays available in free roam after the story.

The Wolf: What It Does, and Why You Cannot Order It Around

The wolf is a chance-based helper, not a pet you command. Sucker Punch’s own wording is that “at first, the wolf roams freely”, and that it lends its ferocity only by “chance”; Push Square reports that you cannot control it directly. You deepen the bond by “discovering wolf dens and rescuing caged wolves”, and unlocks raise the chance that it fights beside you.

Sucker Punch says the wolf roams freely at first and helps by chance, not on command (AI-generated illustration)

The trophy list counts ten wolf dens, and each completed den gives you one wolf skill unlock (PowerPyx). Once you have the Wolf’s Call skill, you can play the Song of the Wolf by swiping left on the touchpad, and the wolf appears and fights alongside you (Dexerto). No source we read gives one clear den count for Wolf’s Call, so check your skill tree rather than counting dens.

Wolf skillWhat it does
Wolf Strike SummonThrowing a weapon or sake jar may call the wolf in for a follow-up attack
Wolf RescueOccasionally rescues you when you are downed
Wolf StandoffThe wolf may join a standoff against another enemy
Wolf’s MightWolf abilities instantly kill Brutes and Leaders
Primal BondThe wolf responds to the song more often and in more locations

The skill to know about as a beginner is Wolf’s Might, because it gives the Brute problem a second answer next to the Odachi. We found it in a single wiki list and did not verify it in game, so treat it as likely rather than proven. The Primal Bond entry also implies the wolf is not always available otherwise, which matches the developer’s “chance” wording.

One practical use of the “chance” design: PowerPyx says that throwing an empty sake jar at an enemy, ideally from stealth, can summon the wolf for a kill once you own Wolf Strike Summon, but it will not trigger every time. Plan on the wolf as a bonus that sometimes arrives, and keep your parry and weapon swaps as the plan that always works.

Is Ghost of Yōtei Coming to PC? The Honest Answer

No, and there is no dated plan to change that. Ghost of Yōtei is PS5-only, Bloomberg reported on 4 March 2026 that plans for a PC port were dropped, and the Complete Edition that launched on 1 October 2026 is listed for PS5 only. What we cannot say is that Sony has confirmed it in a press release: heise wrote at the time that “Sony has not yet commented on the report”, and no source we read quotes a later Sony statement.

The reasons reported are that PlayStation games reportedly do not sell as well on PC and that PC releases could hurt console sales (Game Informer). Kotaku says the strategy “is subject to change”. The precedent cuts both ways: Ghost of Tsushima reached PC a few years after its console launch, and our check of its Steam page shows the Director’s Cut released there on 16 May 2024 at a $59.99 US list price. A reversal is possible in principle, but nothing in the reporting points to one.

If PC is your platform, the closest thing is Tsushima itself, and our Ghost of Tsushima Steam Deck settings guide covers the stutter fix. For other big single-player action RPGs that do run on PC, our ranked list of the 20 best action RPGs of 2026 (it does not cover Yōtei) is the next stop, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which reached Steam on 23 January 2025, has its own beginner guide here.

For a buying decision, that means the reporting gives you no date to wait for. If you want to play Ghost of Yōtei, treat it as a PlayStation game; if you only have a PC, the options above are the ones that exist today. The picture changes only if Sony issues an official statement or a Steam page appears.

Which Version to Play in October 2026

The base campaign is the beginner content, and the Complete Edition adds material for after it. Deku Deals lists the Complete Edition as the base game plus Echoes of Sekigahara (a story expansion), Most Wanted (a combat survival mode) and Legends (co-op multiplayer), with the expansion and survival mode arriving in patch 2.0. Legends itself went out as a free update on 10 March 2026 (Wikipedia). Check the PlayStation Store for the upgrade price if you already own the base game, because we could not verify a price from a source we could read.

For a sense of how critics rated the base game, Metacritic showed a Metascore of 86 from 139 critic reviews when we read it on 19 October 2026.

FAQ

Do I have to switch weapons in Ghost of Yōtei?

No. Fox says the game “definitely would like players best to learn to switch weapons when it is appropriate, cause it’s the most efficient way to play”, and also that “the game will not hurt you” if you do not. Our verdict is to stay on the Wolf Blade for the first hours, then swap for shields and Brutes first, because those are the matchups where an unaligned weapon should cost you the most time. That ordering is our judgement, not a measured result.

Which difficulty should a first-time player pick?

Easy for most people, because enemies take more hits without demanding perfect reactions, and you can change the setting any time. Pick Casual if action games are new to you, and move to Hard or Lethal once blue-glint parries are automatic. Custom is there if you want strong enemies with forgiving parry windows, or the reverse.

Do I need to play Ghost of Tsushima first?

No. Metacritic’s description calls Yōtei a standalone experience set 300 years after Tsushima. If you have played Tsushima, the one habit to drop is stances, because Yōtei replaced them with weapon swapping.

Can I play Ghost of Yōtei on PC?

Not today. It is PS5-only, Bloomberg reported that PC plans were dropped, and Steam’s store search finds no listing as of 19 October 2026. Sony has not issued a public statement that we could find, so “reportedly cancelled” is the accurate wording.
