Your Faith stat isn’t a smooth ramp of “more Faith = more damage.” It’s a series of hard unlocks, and three of them matter more than the rest: 25, 40, and 60. Each one changes not just which incantations you can cast, but which Sacred Seal actually scales them best. Here’s the short version before the breakdown:
- 25 Faith: Golden Vow (the incantation version, not the Ash of War) becomes castable, and you have enough room for a full early-fight kit — Flame Grant Me Strength, Fire Serpent, Lightning Spear. Run the Finger Seal.
- 40 Faith: The Erdtree Seal becomes usable for the first time, but don’t switch to it yet — the numbers say wait. Multilayered Ring of Light and a stronger Giantsflame Take Thee loadout open up. Run the Godslayer’s Seal.
- 60 Faith: Black Blade is in reach, Elden Stars is castable, and your damage per FP point spikes. Still run the Godslayer’s Seal — the Erdtree Seal doesn’t pull ahead until well into the high-60s Faith range, past this breakpoint.

25 Faith: Your First Real Caster Loadout
At 25 Faith you cross the threshold for Golden Vow — and it’s worth building around, because the incantation version is meaningfully stronger than the Ash of War everyone starts with. The Ash of War gives +11.5% attack power and +7.5% damage negation for 45 seconds on any weapon, no Faith required. The incantation costs a memory slot and 47 FP but pushes that to +15% attack power and +10% negation for 80 seconds — almost double the uptime with a 50% higher damage bonus[7]. 40 Faith: The Midgame Power Spike
This is where the loadout stops being “a few good spells” and becomes an actual kit. Multilayered Ring of Light unlocks at 36 Faith, and by 40 you have full access to Giantsflame Take Thee (30 Faith, 30 FP after the Patch 1.07 cost reduction from 32), one of the hardest-hitting single-cast fire options in the game and a strong pairing with Flame Grant Me Strength or Golden Vow already in your rotation[2].
Here’s the part most loadout guides skip: 40 Faith is also the exact point the Erdtree Seal becomes equippable — and the exact point you should not switch to it. Ancient Dragon’s Lightning Strike also opens at 26 Faith and is worth slotting in if you’re fighting armored or large enemies — it’s a heavier, chargeable hit rather than a spam tool, which makes it a good complement to the faster Fire Serpent/Lightning Spear pair from the 25 Faith tier rather than a replacement for them[1].
60 Faith: The Endgame DPS Loadout
At 46 Faith, Black Blade becomes usable — but it isn’t purchased, it’s traded. You get Remembrance of the Black Blade from Maliketh, the Black Blade boss fight, then hand it to Enia at Roundtable Hold[9]. That’s a structurally different unlock from everything else in this guide: no amount of Runes gets you there early, only progression. Seal choice at 60 Faith: still Godslayer’s Seal, not Erdtree. This is the single most common mistake in Faith build planning past the midgame, and it’s worth its own section.
The Seal Breakpoint Almost Nobody States Correctly
Most guides tell you to run Finger Seal early and Erdtree Seal late, without ever saying where “late” actually starts. Looking at each seal’s own maxed-upgrade scaling table tells a clearer story than “just get the Erdtree Seal”: Godslayer’s Seal (usable from 27 Faith, maxes at +25) tops out at 257 Incant Scaling once you’ve hit 80 Faith. Godslayer’s Seal is found early — a chest in Stormveil Castle behind a Stonesword Key fog gate near the Rampart Tower elevator — so most Faith builds can be running the correct mid-to-late seal well before they hit the Faith to use it optimally[4]. Erdtree Seal is a free pickup in Volcano Manor, on a corpse near the Omenkiller below the Prison Town Church grace, but there’s no rush to grab it until your Faith is actually closing in on that high-60s crossover[5].

Here’s a correction worth making explicitly, because it trips up a lot of players: Brother Corhyn does not sell incantations at the Church of Vows. That’s a different NPC — Miriel, Pastor of Vows — and confusing the two sends players to the wrong building looking for a merchant who was never there.
Corhyn starts at the Roundtable Hold, selling Catch Flame and Flame Sling early on, plus the Heal line. He later leaves to search for Goldmask, relocating through Altus Plateau (where he adds Great Heal and Lightning Fortification), the Forest-Spanning Great Bridge, and eventually Leyndell. Most of the higher-tier incantations in this guide unlock through prayerbooks you hand him or Miriel, not Runes alone — the Giant’s Prayerbook for Giantsflame Take Thee, the Dragon Cult Prayerbook for Lightning Spear[2][6][8].
Miriel, at the actual Church of Vows on the East Isle of Liurnia, sells Black Flame, Lightning Spear, Giantsflame Take Thee, and Ancient Dragons’ Lightning Strike directly once you’ve handed over the right prayerbook — functionally the same catalogue as Corhyn’s later stock, just accessible without chasing Corhyn’s Goldmask questline across the map[11]. Is the Erdtree Seal always the best late-game seal?
Eventually, yes — its maxed scaling (353 at 80 Faith) comfortably beats Godslayer’s Seal’s maxed scaling (257 at 80 Faith). But not the moment it’s equippable at 40 Faith, and not at 60 either. Godslayer’s Seal out-scales it through the entire 40-to-high-60s range and adds a Black Flame damage bonus on top. Treat “40 Faith unlocks Erdtree Seal” and “40 Faith means switch to Erdtree Seal” as two separate facts, because most guides conflate them.
Should I buy from Corhyn or Miriel?
Miriel, if you’re still in Liurnia and don’t want to track Corhyn through his Goldmask questline moves. Corhyn’s stock catches up eventually and his later locations add a couple of incantations Miriel doesn’t carry, but for the core 25/40 Faith kit in this guide, Miriel is the faster stop.
Is Golden Vow worth a memory slot over the Ash of War version?
Yes, once you’ve got 25 Faith and FP to spare — 80 seconds of uptime at +15%/+10% beats 45 seconds at +11.5%/+7.5%, and you’re not tying up your weapon’s Ash of War slot for a buff, freeing that slot for an actual combat skill.
Do I need to reach 60 Faith to make Black Blade worth planning around?
Only 46 Faith to cast it, but it’s gated by defeating Maliketh and trading his remembrance with Enia, not by Runes. Plan your Faith stat around 46+ once you know you’re heading into that fight, rather than treating it as a 60 Faith reward.
