How to Romance Wyll in BG3: Approval Triggers, Duke Ravenguard’s Rescue, and the Mizora Ending

Wyll appears straightforward on the surface — charming, heroic, and openly idealistic. But romancing him correctly means understanding three interconnected systems: his approval mechanics, the fate of Duke Ravenguard, and the contract offer Mizora will use to derail everything in Act 3. Miss any of these and the romance does not just stall — it ends permanently, sometimes with no warning.

This guide covers every approval trigger, each act’s romance scene conditions, the five-step Duke Ravenguard rescue chain, and the Mizora decision that most guides fail to explain clearly. Verified on Patch 8.

Wyll’s future — Grand Duke of Baldur’s Gate or wandering demon-hunter — hinges on the Mizora deal in Act 3.

Wyll’s Approval: What He Respects and What Ends It

Wyll measures you by your actions toward the vulnerable. Heroic choices consistently earn his approval; cruelty and cowardice consistently lose it. To reach the minimum 10 Approval needed to begin Act 1 romance, focus on these early-game actions:

ActionApproval
Support Karlach against Hendricks+20
Save the Emerald Grove from the goblin siege+15
Rescue Tiefling refugees (multiple actions)+1 to +5 each
Refuse a devil’s pact in dialogue+5
Free enslaved people (gnomes, artists, prisoners)+1 to +3 each
Attack goblin leaders, hags, or devils+1 to +3 per combat

What ends it permanently: Siding with the goblins and attacking the Emerald Grove removes Wyll from your party for the rest of the playthrough. There is no recovery from this — his quest line and romance become inaccessible the moment you commit.

Wyll is strictly monogamous. He will not accept an open relationship. If you are in a confirmed romance with him and accept Mizora’s romantic advances in Act 3, he walks in the following morning and ends the relationship with no dialogue option to prevent it.

Act 1 — Starting the Romance at the Tiefling Celebration

The Act 1 romance window opens after you save both Halsin and the Tiefling refugees at the Emerald Grove. Take a Long Rest immediately after clearing the goblin camp — a celebration begins at your campsite, and Wyll appears with an exclamation mark above his head if you have at least 10 Approval.

Approach him at the campfire and choose the flirtatious dialogue options. He will lead you to a quieter spot by a stream, where a DC 15 Persuasion check determines whether you can kiss him that night. Pass it and Wyll responds: “There will be another time for us” — confirming the relationship. Fail and the conversation ends warmly but without a commitment.

Missing the celebration entirely is not fatal — the romance can still be initiated in early Act 2 — but the celebration scene is the most emotionally complete introduction to Wyll as a partner and is worth triggering correctly by resting promptly.

Act 2 — Deepening the Bond at Moonrise

The Act 2 romance scene triggers during a Long Rest in the Shadowlands, subject to two conditions: at least 20 Approval with Wyll, and a confirmed dating relationship (from Act 1 or initiated in early Act 2).

Wyll invites you to dance at camp. Accepting leads to a DC 10 skill check — straightforward for most builds. The scene culminates in a waltz and a kiss. It is quieter than Act 1, focused on Wyll’s vulnerability about his pact rather than heroic confidence. This tonal shift matters for understanding what the Mizora decision in Act 3 will cost him emotionally.

Do not pursue competing romances during Act 2. Wyll will ask you to choose if he discovers a parallel relationship.

The Duke Ravenguard Quest Chain — Why You Cannot Ignore It

This is the most consequential mechanic in Wyll’s romance: if Duke Ulder Ravengard dies at any point in Act 3, Wyll initiates a breakup. He tells you he hurts everyone around him while grieving, asks for one last dance, and ends the relationship regardless of your approval score or any dialogue option. There is no skill check, no override.

The Duke’s survival depends on completing a five-step chain that begins in Act 1:

  1. Act 1 — Rescue Counsellor Florrick at Waukeen’s Rest. This is time-sensitive. Once you trigger the burning inn cutscene, do not long rest or fast travel away before entering the building. The trapped survivors die if you delay. Free Florrick from her cell — she is the only thread that connects to Acts 2 and 3.
  2. Act 2 — Find Florrick at Last Light Inn. She briefs you on the Duke’s disappearance and establishes the contact chain into Act 3.
  3. Act 3 — Attend Gortash’s coronation at Wyrm’s Rock Fortress with Wyll in your active party. You will encounter the Duke, now infected with a mind flayer tadpole and under Gortash’s influence. Wyll recognizes immediately that something is wrong with his father.
  4. Speak to the Duke again at camp after the coronation, then enter the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate.
  5. Accept Mizora’s camp visit. She appears at your next Long Rest with a proposal. This meeting is mandatory — travel to the Iron Throne before meeting Mizora and the Duke is already dead when you arrive.

Skipping or failing step 5 is the most common reason players lose the romance in Act 3 without understanding why. The game does not warn you explicitly.

The Mizora Decision — Accept, Break, or Outmaneuver Her

At camp, Mizora offers Wyll a choice that defines both his character arc and the shape of your romance ending. She knows where Duke Ravengard is imprisoned in the Iron Throne — an underwater prison beneath the harbor — and will help rescue him. In exchange: Wyll must bind his soul to her and Zariel permanently, for the rest of his life.

Most guides frame this as a binary. There are actually three paths:

Path 1 — Accept the Eternal Contract (Easiest)

Wyll secures his father’s rescue and the romance continues intact, but his soul remains permanently bound to Zariel. Mizora retains leverage over him into the epilogue — the Grand Duke route carries this weight, and the Blade of Frontiers life he wants requires her approval to pursue.

This is the lowest-friction option for keeping the romance alive, but it resolves Wyll’s core character arc — the quest to reclaim his autonomy — in the direction of failure. Recommended for casual players who prioritize story continuity over Wyll’s personal outcome.

Path 2 — Break the Pact Alone (High Risk)

Wyll gains his freedom from Mizora’s contract. But the Duke is, in her words, as good as dead — she will not assist, and the Iron Throne rescue becomes significantly harder without her. If the Duke dies during the attempt, the romance ends. Do not choose this path without committing to Path 3 below.

Path 3 — Break the Pact and Rescue the Duke Independently (Best Outcome)

This is what most guides omit: you can break Wyll’s contract and still save Duke Ravengard. Without Mizora’s help, the rescue becomes harder, but the Emperor may be able to assist at the Iron Throne — the Duke can potentially be retrieved without the eternal servitude deal. This path:

  • Frees Wyll from Zariel permanently
  • Keeps the Duke alive (and the romance intact, if the rescue succeeds)
  • Unlocks the Blade of Frontiers epilogue with no ongoing obligations to Mizora

The tradeoff: the Iron Throne sequence is timed, and losing the Duke there still triggers the breakup. Bring movement abilities and prioritize Ravengard’s location first. Recommended for completionist and hardcore players who want the best outcome for both Wyll and the romance.

One absolute rule: Do not accept Mizora’s romantic advances in Act 3 while pursuing Wyll. Declining her cleanly closes that thread. Accepting — even once — triggers Wyll discovering you the next morning. No dialogue option saves the romance after that scene plays.

Act 3 — Tales of Ansur and the Proposal

The final romance scene requires completing both of Wyll’s companion quests: the Duke Ravenguard rescue chain above, and Tales of Ansur — Wyll’s personal quest that resolves his identity as the Blade of Frontiers through a confrontation with the legendary dragon Ansur beneath Baldur’s Gate. Complete both, then take a Long Rest. An exclamation mark above Wyll signals the scene is ready.

Wyll proposes using an acorn from the Wilden Oak, a symbol of the natural world he has spent his life protecting. Accept, and the scene fades to an intimate moment. His epilogue then branches into three paths based on your choices:

EndingConditionWhat Happens
Grand DukeDuke Ravengard survives; Wyll inherits the titleRules Baldur’s Gate alongside you as co-leader; the two adopt a daughter, Lily Aurora Ravengard
Blade of FrontiersPact broken; Wyll fully freeWyll hunts demons in Avernus; player can join or maintain the relationship long-distance
IllithidPlayer character transformedWyll stays despite your transformation; adapts the relationship to the new circumstances

One unusual mechanic: if you want to decline the proposal while keeping the relationship, a DC 20 Charisma/Persuasion check lets you refuse gracefully without ending the romance. Most players will simply accept — but the option is there for those who want the relationship without the formal commitment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you save Duke Ravengard without accepting Mizora’s deal?

Yes, but it requires more effort. Breaking the pact means Mizora will not help, but the Emperor may be able to assist at the Iron Throne. The rescue is timed and more difficult without Mizora’s support — bring movement abilities and go to the Duke’s location first. If the Duke dies during the attempt, the romance ends regardless.

Does siding against the Tieflings permanently remove Wyll?

Yes. Attacking the Emerald Grove or siding with the goblins in the grove assault causes Wyll to leave the party permanently. His companion quest, approval history, and all romance options go with him. There is no way to bring him back in the same playthrough.

What happens to the romance if Duke Ravengard dies?

Wyll initiates a breakup at your next camp. He explains that he hurts those around him while grieving and asks for one last dance before ending the relationship. It is one of the more affecting companion exits in the game — but it is not recoverable. No approval score or dialogue option changes the outcome once the Duke is confirmed dead.

Can you romance both Wyll and Astarion?

Not long-term. Wyll is monogamous and will force a choice if he discovers a competing relationship. For how other companion romances work alongside main quest decisions, see our BG3 Companion Romance Guide and our Astarion Romance Guide.
