BG3 Blood of Lathander: The 4-Turn Solar Machine Trap That Destroys Rosymorn Monastery (And How to Skip It)

Verified against bg3.wiki (Patch 8 data). Rosymorn Monastery hasn’t changed mechanically since launch.

Most guides treat the Blood of Lathander as one puzzle: solve the stained-glass window, get the mace. It’s actually two separate systems stacked on top of each other, and mixing them up is how players end up watching Rosymorn Monastery collapse around them. The stained-glass puzzle only unlocks a key item — the Dawnmaster’s Crest. A completely different trap, four turns long, guards the mace itself deep in the Githyanki Crèche below, and it doesn’t care whether you solved the puzzle upstairs. It only cares whether you’re holding the crest when you reach for the weapon.

This guide covers both systems in the order you’ll actually hit them: find the three ceremonial weapons, solve the pedestal puzzle, then navigate the path to the final chamber where the real trap waits. For everything else Act 1 locks before you leave the Mountain Pass, see the BG3 Act 1 guide.

Quick Start — Get the Mace With Zero Risk

  1. Collect the Ceremonial Mace, Battleaxe, and Warhammer (locations below — the Ceremonial Longsword is already placed)
  2. Throw or drop each weapon on its matching Dawnmaster pedestal in the stained-glass room
  3. Open the hidden compartment and take the Dawnmaster’s Crest
  4. Head to the Githyanki Crèche beneath the monastery and reach the Inquisitor’s Chambers
  5. Rotate the two statues, disarm the Dawnbreaker trap, and clear the three energy crystals blocking the vault path
  6. At the final altar, place the Dawnmaster’s Crest in the item slot — not your inventory slot — before touching the mace
  7. Take the Blood of Lathander safely and collect 145 XP

Skip step 6 and the mace triggers a monastery-collapsing trap instead of a safe pickup. That mechanic gets its own section below.

Finding the Three Ceremonial Weapons

The Ceremonial Longsword is already resting on its pedestal when you find the puzzle room, so you only need to track down three more. None of them are hidden behind combat you can’t avoid, but two have skill checks worth prepping for.

WeaponLocationHow to Get It
Ceremonial MaceGround-floor brewery, on a Kobold LooterKill or pickpocket the kobold. Alternate copy sits at Dawnmaster Stockhold’s gravesite on the upper floor if you miss the first one.
Ceremonial BattleaxeEnchanted chamber on the monastery roofLockpick the door (DC 15) or break through the chamber’s southern wall. A Guardian of Faith spirit attacks the moment you grab the axe or loot the room’s skeletons — nothing else in the room provokes it.
Ceremonial WarhammerGiant Eagle’s nest, topmost floorClimb the knotted roots to the nest. Pass an Animal Handling check (DC 18) or use Speak with Animals to avoid a fight with the eagles — otherwise you’ll have to kill or outrun them.

The battleaxe fight is the one to prep for: a Guardian of Faith deals radiant damage every turn it’s active, so grab the weapon and immediately retreat out of the chamber rather than looting the rest of the room while it’s summoned.

Solving the Stained-Glass Puzzle

The puzzle room holds four pedestals, each tied to a Dawnmaster shown in the stained-glass window on the floor. One panel of the window is cracked, so if you can’t read the full picture, look for “The Parables of Dawnmaster Vaseid” — a book found after clearing the gremishkas nearby that spells out the same answer in text.

Throw or drop each weapon onto its matching pedestal. Get one wrong and the weapon physically bounces back at whoever placed it, hard enough to knock them prone — annoying, but that’s the entire penalty. No alarm sounds, no trap arms, and nothing about a wrong guess here affects the Solar Machine trap waiting downstairs. Correct placements light up the stained glass and pop open a hidden compartment holding the Dawnmaster’s Crest, plus a party-wide buff called Morninglord’s Radiance.

From Crest to Chamber: Reaching the Blood of Lathander

The mace itself sits inside the Githyanki Crèche beneath the monastery, not in the puzzle room. Once you’re past the Inquisitor and back from the Astral Plane encounter, look for two statues on the chamber’s left side — rotate one to face sunrise and the other to face sunset. If a statue won’t turn, apply grease or hit it with a blunt weapon to free it up. The southern statue carries a DC 25 Athletics check if you try to force it by hand instead.

Beyond the statues, a Dawnbreaker trap needs a DC 14 Sleight of Hand check to disarm, and three energy-source crystals block the final stretch — clear them with ranged attacks whenever you reach them; there’s no time pressure on this part. The final chamber holds the mace on an altar with a separate item slot built into it. That slot is the entire trap.

The Solar Machine Trap — What Actually Happens If You Skip the Crest

Try to take the mace without placing the Dawnmaster’s Crest in the altar slot first, and the game warns you more than once before letting you follow through. Ignore the warnings and four Solar Machines activate around the chamber, each holding 30 HP and only damageable by ranged attacks or spells. You get four combat turns to destroy all four — or disable enough of their light barriers to get your party out — before the monastery collapses and takes every remaining item in it down with it, mace included.

If you haven’t taken the mace yet: just do the puzzle first. This entire section becomes irrelevant — placing the crest in the altar slot grants safe retrieval and 145 XP with no trap at all.

If you’ve already grabbed the mace and the timer started: count your ranged damage. Four Fireballs, Magic Missiles, or a full round of bow/crossbow shots from a 4-person party clears 30 HP per machine easily within four turns if focus-fired one at a time rather than split across all four at once. Splitting damage evenly across all four machines wastes turns — none of them go down, none of their barriers drop, and you burn your escape window for nothing. Pick one machine, kill it, move to the next. If your party is melee-heavy with no reliable ranged output, don’t gamble on the DPS check — run for the exit the instant the barriers thin enough to pass, since surviving with the mace beats losing the whole room’s loot to a wipe.

Running Honour Mode: the collapsing-monastery outcome is a wipe condition, not a reload-and-retry one. Treat the altar exactly like any other permadeath checkpoint — physically confirm the Dawnmaster’s Crest is in your inventory before anyone interacts with the mace, not just before you leave the puzzle room.

Blood of Lathander Stats and the Best Class to Wield It

The mace is a Legendary +3 weapon dealing 1d6+3 bludgeoning damage plus your Strength modifier — solid but not exceptional on the base swing. What makes it worth the run is the kit stapled to it.

PropertyEffect
Lathander’s BlessingOnce per long rest, drop to 0 HP and heal 2d6 instead — allies within 9m also regain 1d6
Lathander’s Light6m radius holy light; fiends and undead must pass a DC 14 Constitution save or go blind
SunbeamCasts the level 6 evocation spell once per long rest — no spell slot spent

Concussive Smash shows up on the mace’s action bar too, but that’s a generic weapon action available to any proficient mace user, not something unique to this one — don’t pick this weapon expecting it as a special property.

BG3 cleric wielding the Blood of Lathander mace, its light pushing back shadow-cursed enemies in Act 2
Lathander’s Light dispels the Shadow Curse and blinds fiends and undead — most Shadow-Cursed Lands enemies are vulnerable to the radiant damage this mace deals.

The real reason to make this trip is Act 2. Lathander’s Light dispels the Shadow Curse and counts as sunlight for Sunlight Hypersensitivity, and most Shadow-Cursed Lands enemies are vulnerable to radiant damage — which Sunbeam deals in bulk. Carrying a permanent light source also frees up a cantrip slot that would otherwise go to Light.

Which Build Should Actually Use It?

Player TypePriority
New playerUse the Parables book instead of the cracked glass panel, fight the eagles rather than risking the Animal Handling check, and don’t touch the final altar without the crest already in inventory
Casual playerGrab all three weapons on one pass through the monastery, solve the puzzle, then go straight to the Crèche — skip re-looting the battleaxe room after the Guardian of Faith fight
Light Domain Cleric / Oath of Devotion PaladinEnd-game target for this weapon — radiant synergy with Sunbeam and Divine Smite makes it a straight upgrade over most Act 1–2 maces
Life Domain ClericLathander’s Blessing’s free self-revive lets you leave Revivify unprepared for another spell slot without losing your safety net

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get both mace locations if I miss the kobold?

No — the Kobold Looter mace and the gravesite mace are the same item in two possible spawn points, not two separate weapons. If you’ve already looted one, the other won’t be there.

Does placing the wrong weapon on a pedestal ever trigger the Solar Machine trap?

No. That’s the most common mix-up with this quest — the pedestal puzzle and the Solar Machine trap are unconnected systems. A wrong pedestal guess only knocks a party member prone; the Solar Machines only activate at the final altar, and only if you skip placing the crest there.

Is the Blood of Lathander worth it if I’m not running a Cleric or Paladin?

It’s still a Legendary weapon with a free heal and a free level 6 spell attached, so it’s rarely a bad pick. The radiant kit just underperforms outside a build that already leans into radiant or holy damage — a Rogue or pure martial gets the stats and the utility but not the full synergy.
