The players who out-resource you in V Rising aren’t farming harder. They’re running the servant loop on autopilot while you grind manually.
How to Recruit Servants: Dominate and the Charm Mechanic
Servants are recruited through a two-phase ability called Dominate. The ability was reworked in patch 1.1 — previously limited to humans under the name Dominate Human, it now functions against any unit with a detectable blood type, though human NPCs remain the most consistent recruitment source.

Step 4 — Convert. Interact with the coffin to begin conversion. This costs 100 Blood Essence and takes 20 real-time minutes (halved from 40 minutes in patch 1.1). At the conversion screen you’ll see the servant’s blood type, blood quality percentage, and their rolled expertise value — the multiplier that scales their mission power.
Capture location matters. A servant recruited from Dunley Farmlands carries a Dunley faction bonus — they earn 20% more loot when sent on missions within that region. Where possible, capture servants in the zone you plan to send them. It’s a passive bonus that compounds over hundreds of missions.
Resurrection after death costs 50 Blood Essence and 10 minutes. Losing a servant is a minor setback, not a catastrophe — run missions aggressively.

Every servant carries one of five blood-type perks. One hard rule: perks do not stack. Feeding a servant a different blood type activates a new perk and permanently replaces the old one. The mission system uses three colour-coded duration tiers, each with a different risk-reward trade-off:

Leveling Servants: How Expertise Works
Servant power follows a two-variable formula: Gear Score × Expertise Multiplier.
Gear score is straightforward — equip your servants with armour and a weapon exactly as you would your own character. Expertise is locked in at conversion. When you convert a human, the game rolls an expertise percentage within a range determined by blood quality:
- 100% blood quality: expertise rolls 15–26%
- 80% blood quality: expertise rolls 11–20%
The practical implication: 100% blood gives access to the highest expertise ceiling, but the actual power difference between a 100% servant and an 80% servant is roughly 12–14% at the extremes — not worth agonising over. The working threshold is 80%+ blood quality. Below that, conversion is a resource gamble; above it, the returns are diminishing.
The important rule: once converted, blood quality has zero further effect. The expertise is permanently set at conversion. After that, only gear upgrades change servant power. Keep their equipment current with your own progression tier and they will handle the corresponding mission zones.
One exception: servants gain location-specific expertise bonuses based on their capture origin. A servant recruited in Silverlight Hills carries a Silverlight expertise bonus that improves their loot yield there beyond the base perk system. Capture from the zone you plan to farm when you have the option.
Oakveil Woodlands: Four New Servant Missions in 1.1
The Invaders of Oakveil update added four servant hunt locations to the Oakveil Woodlands biome. All are end-game zones requiring high gear scores. Brute-blood servants (Tenacious Strength perk) are the recommended assignment here, as Oakveil qualifies as a harsh environment for the perk’s -100 difficulty reduction.
Venom Blades Bastion — Ruins repurposed by the Venom Blades faction. High-value drops: Ember Glass and Schematics. Priority target if you’re gating on late-game crafting recipes that require schematic unlocks.
Carvers Logging Outpost — The map’s best source of Corrupted Oak, Venom Sap, and Corrupted Flower. Golden chests spawn here regularly. If you need Oakveil-specific wood-type resources, this is your primary destination.
Venom Mixing Outpost — The single best flower-farming mission in the entire game. Returns Blood Rose, Fire Blossom, Snow Flower, Hell’s Clarion, Ghost Shroom, Trippy Shroom, Plague Brier, and Corrupted Flower from a single mission. Useful for alchemy-heavy play styles.

Can servants die permanently?
No. Servants can be defeated but are never lost permanently. Resurrect them at their Servant Coffin for 50 Blood Essence with a 10-minute revival timer. The low cost means you should send servants on borderline-power missions without hesitation — the risk is an inconvenience, not a loss.
How many servants can I have?
Castle Heart Level 1 gives you four Servant Coffin slots. The maximum is nine coffins at full castle upgrade. Do not wait for max upgrade to start — four servants running from early game outperforms nine servants starting at hour 50 by a wide margin of cumulative loot.
Does blood quality still matter after conversion?
No. Blood quality determines the expertise range rolled at conversion — higher quality gives access to higher expertise ceilings.
