Best Mimikyu Nature and Moveset: Disguise Buys One Turn, Jolly Buys 3 Speed Tiers, Adamant Buys 7 Better KOs

Run Jolly. In Smogon’s October 2026 Scarlet/Violet RU stats, the Jolly spreads listed for Mimikyu at the 1630 cutoff add up to 93.4%, and the only Adamant spread listed is 2.0%. The standard set is Swords Dance, Shadow Sneak, Shadow Claw and Drain Punch.

The reason is mechanical, not tradition. Disguise absorbs the first hit, so Mimikyu gets one Swords Dance turn almost for free, and from the second turn on Speed decides who moves first. Jolly’s 320 Speed outspeeds three common RU Pokémon that Adamant’s 291 does not: Kleavor, Krookodile and Timid Yanmega (unscarfed sets). Adamant is not useless, though. I ran the damage calcs, and its extra Attack improves the best knockout against 7 of the 30 most-used RU Pokémon, mostly slow walls. This guide gives the set, both sides of that trade and the move-by-move coverage.

Quick Start: The Standard Jolly Set

  • Nature: Jolly (+Speed, −Special Attack)
  • EVs: 252 Attack / 4 Special Defense / 252 Speed. 83.4% of Mimikyu run exactly this at the 1630 cutoff.
  • Ability: Disguise (Mimikyu’s only ability)
  • Item: Life Orb (59.5%) or Red Card (37.4%)
  • Tera type: Ghost (77.4%)
  • Moves: Swords Dance / Shadow Sneak / Shadow Claw / Drain Punch. Play Rough is the swap slot, and Wood Hammer is the pick against Quagsire.

Verified against Smogon’s October 2026 Scarlet/Violet RU usage stats (published 1 November), Smogon’s RU Strategy Dex analysis and Pokémon Showdown’s game data on 2 November 2026. Everything here is the singles ladder, not VGC. Mimikyu is an RU Pokémon: it ranks 14th there at 12.5% usage at the 1630 cutoff. In OU it is a niche pick, covered near the end.

What Disguise Actually Buys: One Free Turn, Not Two

Disguise cancels the damage of the first attacking move that hits Mimikyu, which turns the Swords Dance turn into a 12.4% HP tax instead of a hit. Pokémon Database describes it as letting the bearer “avoid damage for one attack, in a similar way to Substitute.”

The detail that matters is in Showdown’s code for the ability. The first damaging move deals 0 damage, whatever its power or type (the ability is flagged as breakable, so Mold Breaker-style abilities get past it), and then Mimikyu switches to its Busted form and loses one-eighth of its maximum HP, rounded down. On the standard spread (251 HP with no HP EVs) that is 31 HP, or 12.4%, which leaves Mimikyu on 220. The code only reacts to damage from moves, so a status move such as Will-O-Wisp is not blocked.

Smogon’s own RU analysis says the same in one sentence: “Disguise gives Mimikyu a free turn that it can use to reliably set up Swords Dance” (Smogon Strategy Dex, Mimikyu RU). The same analysis adds that RU has no viable Mold Breaker Pokémon, so Disguise “almost always guarantees Mimikyu a free turn to set up Swords Dance.” Two words in the first sentence need care. “Free” means 12.4% of Mimikyu’s HP, not nothing. And “a turn” means exactly one: once the Busted form appears, the next hit lands in full.

That is why the nature debate lives on turn two. Mimikyu is now at +2 Attack and 220 HP with no disguise left, and whoever moves first takes or deals a full hit. Swords Dance raises Attack and nothing else, so the Speed stat Mimikyu walked in with is the Speed it still has. Dragon Dance behaves differently because it raises Speed as well, which is why our Dragonite nature guide finds that Adamant still beats Jolly after one Dragon Dance. Mimikyu gets no second chance like that. Its tiers are raw stat numbers.

Jolly vs Adamant: What 29 Speed Points and 27 Attack Points Mean

At Level 100 with 252 EVs and 31 IVs, Jolly Mimikyu has 320 Speed and 279 Attack, while Adamant has 291 Speed and 306 Attack. Those figures come from Showdown’s stat formula, and Pokémon Database lists the same 306 Attack and 320 Speed maximums.

Stat (Level 100, 252 EVs)JollyAdamant
Speed320291
Attack279306
Attack at +2 (after Swords Dance)558612

Adamant’s Attack edge is 9.7% (306 against 279) and Jolly’s Speed edge is 10.0% (320 against 291). The trade is symmetrical on paper, which is why the ladder data settles it better than arithmetic does.

That data is lopsided. At the 1630 cutoff, the listed Jolly spreads make up 93.4% of Mimikyu and the only listed Adamant spread 2.0%. Looser ladders list more Adamant: 9.9% at the 1500 cutoff and 10.0% across the whole ladder, against 82.7% and 76.7% Jolly (listed spreads only; Smogon groups the rest as “Other”). Smogon’s own RU analysis lists only Jolly. Read the trend as “the stronger the ladder, the more Jolly”, not as proof that Adamant is wrong. The rest of this guide tests it.

The Three Speed Tiers Between 291 and 320

Three common RU Pokémon sit between Adamant’s 291 and Jolly’s 320: Kleavor at 295, Krookodile at 311 and Timid Yanmega at 317. Jolly outspeeds all three and Adamant outspeeds none. I found them by taking the 30 most-used RU Pokémon after Mimikyu (ranks 1 to 31) and working out each one’s Speed from its most-used spread.

Krookodile, 311
92%
Earthquake, 83-98%
Yanmega (Timid), 317
27%
Shadow Ball, 71-84%

The last column is the share of Busted Mimikyu’s remaining 220 HP that one hit takes, with no damage item on the attacker. Each of those hits removes most of what Disguise leaves behind, so the order of moves on turn two is the whole game. Choice Band Krookodile’s Earthquake does 124-146%, an outright OHKO, and Choice Band is on 23% of Krookodile sets.

Smogon’s RU analysis points at the same two: “A Jolly nature with maximum Speed ensures that Mimikyu can outspeed a large chunk of the tier and, in particular, Kleavor and Krookodile.”

Two caveats cut the value of Jolly’s three tiers. Choice Scarf is on 32.2% of Kleavor sets and 39.0% of Krookodile sets and lifts them to 442 and 466 Speed, past either nature, so Jolly’s edge only exists against their unscarfed sets. And Yanmega runs Speed Boost on 73.8% of sets: after one turn on the field it is at +1 and outspeeds both natures anyway, so the 317 only matters on the turn it comes in.

The same band logic points the other way in our Jynx nature guide, where Timid’s extra Speed rarely flips a matchup and Modest wins on damage. Mimikyu’s band is different because two of its three occupants, Kleavor and Krookodile, are top-10 RU Pokémon by usage.

Everything else is settled before the nature is. Entei (#1 in RU, 328 Speed in its two most-used spreads), Terrakion (346), Gengar (350), Maushold (353), Cyclizar (375) and Noivern (379) outspeed both natures. Gardevoir and Gallade (284), Necrozma (282) and Modest Yanmega (289) are slower than both, and Adamant clears the last of those by two points. The only other Speed matchup is the mirror: 93.4% of Mimikyu run a 320 spread, so Jolly ties it and Adamant loses it. Smogon’s analysis names Entei, Terrakion and Choice Scarf Krookodile as the faster threats that survive Shadow Sneak.

What Adamant Buys Instead: Seven Better Knockouts

Adamant’s extra 27 Attack improves the best knockout against 7 of the 30 most-used RU Pokémon, and Jolly already guarantees a one-hit KO on 20 of them after one Swords Dance. The numbers come from the Smogon damage calculator on Generation 9 rules: Mimikyu at +2 Attack with 252 Attack EVs, Life Orb and Tera Ghost (the set Smogon lists), against each target’s most-used ability, item and spread at full HP. They ignore hazards, Intimidate, Focus Sash, Sturdy and defensive Terastallization, so read a “guaranteed” as guaranteed on paper.

Target (RU rank)Best move, Jolly → Adamant
Blissey (#21)Drain Punch: 50% to OHKO → guaranteed OHKO
Empoleon (#24)Drain Punch: 94% → guaranteed OHKO
Magnezone (#30)Drain Punch: 44% → 94% to OHKO
Goodra-Hisui (#19)Drain Punch: 19% → 69% to OHKO
Registeel (#31)Drain Punch: 91% → guaranteed 2HKO
Entei (#1)Shadow Claw: 69% → guaranteed OHKO
Quagsire (#15)Three-hit KO: 88% likely → guaranteed

Registeel’s 2HKO includes Leftovers recovery. Quagsire’s Unaware ignores the +2, so Adamant only moves a three-hit KO from 88% likely to certain, and Entei outspeeds both natures, so its row matters only if Mimikyu survives the first exchange.

Five of the seven are slow walls: Blissey (146 Speed), Empoleon (156), Magnezone (178), Registeel (136) and Goodra-Hisui (163), all far below even Adamant’s 291. In their most-used spreads Mimikyu moves first against all five with either nature, so Adamant’s gain there is a bonus, not a rescue. It also matches Smogon’s warning that Mimikyu struggles to break through Magnezone and Registeel even at +2: Adamant helps, but Magnezone still survives the Drain Punch about 6% of the time and Registeel needs two hits.

Compare what each nature is buying. Jolly’s three tiers decide who moves first against attackers whose single hit takes 71% to 105% of Mimikyu’s remaining HP. Adamant’s seven decide whether Mimikyu needs one more turn, mostly against walls it already outspeeds. A slower target gives Mimikyu extra turns by definition; a faster attacker removes them.

Which Nature Should You Run?

Run Jolly unless your team already covers Kleavor, Krookodile and Yanmega and loses to slow walls. Like Venusaur, whose best nature in our Venusaur nature guide depends on whether sun is on the field, Mimikyu’s answer depends on the team around it. Unlike Venusaur, one answer covers nearly everyone:

  1. Your team has no other answer to Kleavor, Krookodile or Yanmega, or you expect to meet other Mimikyu (Jolly ties the mirror, Adamant loses it): run Jolly.
  2. Your team already handles those three and you keep stalling on Blissey, Registeel, Magnezone or Empoleon: Adamant is a defensible swap. Smogon’s RU analysis lists no Adamant set and the only Adamant spread listed at the 1630 cutoff is 2.0%, so expect to be off-meta.
  3. The opponent runs Choice Scarf or Entei: neither nature outspeeds them. Shadow Sneak ignores Speed, so use it to finish them once something else has weakened them.
  4. Not sure: run Jolly.
PlayerPick and why
New playerJolly, Life Orb and the four-move set. Kleavor and Krookodile are top-10 RU Pokémon, so you meet them often, and Jolly beats their unscarfed sets without any scouting.
Casual ladder playerJolly with Red Card when your team has no answer to setup sweepers, Life Orb otherwise. The ladder splits 37.4% Red Card to 59.5% Life Orb.
OptimiserJolly by default. Test Adamant only once your answers to the three speed tiers exist, and swap Wood Hammer in for Shadow Claw on teams that cannot beat Quagsire.

Moveset: Shadow Sneak vs Play Rough vs Drain Punch

Run Swords Dance, Shadow Sneak, Shadow Claw and Drain Punch, and treat Play Rough as the swap rather than the default. At the 1630 cutoff Shadow Sneak is on 99.3% of Mimikyu, Swords Dance on 99.2%, Drain Punch on 77.6%, Shadow Claw on 77.3% and Play Rough on 34.1%. Smogon’s RU set lists Swords Dance, Shadow Claw, Drain Punch or Play Rough, and Shadow Sneak.

Coverage matrix of Shadow Sneak, Play Rough and Drain Punch against the 15 most-used RU Pokémon
Type effectiveness from Showdown’s type chart against the RU usage list; the footer counts the top 30. Chart built for this article.

The takeaway from the matrix: Drain Punch is the move that fixes Ghost. Seven of the top 30 resist or are immune to Ghost damage (Cyclizar, Maushold and Blissey are immune; Bisharp, Krookodile, Umbreon and Crawdaunt resist), and all seven take super-effective damage from Drain Punch. No Pokémon in the top 30 resists both Ghost and Fighting. Type matchups are from Showdown’s type chart.

MoveJob in the set
Shadow Sneak (Ghost, 40 power, +1 priority)Ignores Speed. It finishes what outspeeds you: at +2 it rolls an OHKO on the most-used Jirachi spread 19% of the time with Jolly and 75% with Adamant, and just over half of Jirachi sets run 328 Speed.
Shadow Claw (Ghost, 70 power)The damage move. With Jolly in my calcs, Shadow Claw guarantees an OHKO on Jirachi, Slowbro, Gengar, Necrozma and Basculegion, where Play Rough and Drain Punch do not.
Drain Punch (Fighting, 75 power, heals half the damage dealt)Covers the seven Ghost holes above. With Jolly it is the only guaranteed OHKO on Bisharp.
Play Rough (Fairy, 90 power, 90% accuracy)The only guaranteed OHKO on Chesnaught and Umbreon. Resisted by 8 of the top 30 (Entei, Jirachi, Weezing-Galar, Gengar, Empoleon, Forretress, Magnezone, Registeel), and it misses 1 time in 10.
Wood Hammer (Grass, 120 power, one-third recoil)Swap it in for Shadow Claw against Quagsire and Gastrodon: it OHKOs Quagsire (108-128%) through Unaware and Gastrodon (228-269%). Smogon warns the recoil is heavy with Life Orb, and only 5.9% of Mimikyu on the full ladder run it.

Smogon’s analysis splits the slots the same way: Drain Punch for Steel-types that take a hit, “like Bisharp, Empoleon, and Hisuian Goodra”, and Play Rough so that “Umbreon and Chesnaught cannot check Mimikyu.”

Every damage figure from Mimikyu in this guide assumes Tera Ghost, the Tera type on 77.4% of Mimikyu sets, and the hits on Busted Mimikyu assume no Terastallization. The Tera matters: without it, Shadow Claw’s OHKO on Slowbro drops to a two-hit KO (79-94%), though the Jirachi, Gengar and Necrozma OHKOs hold.

What Still Beats This Set

Three things stop Mimikyu whichever nature it runs. Smogon’s RU analysis names Quagsire, Entei and Choice Scarf Krookodile among them.

  • Quagsire (#15). Unaware ignores Swords Dance, so Mimikyu fights it at +0. The best normal move does 32-38% (Shadow Claw, Jolly), a three-hit KO with Adamant too, and Smogon’s check table scores Quagsire as Mimikyu’s top check at the whole-ladder and 1500 cutoffs (70.9 and 63.1). Wood Hammer is the exception.
  • Entei (#1). Its 328 Speed beats both natures, and Smogon says a burn from Sacred Fire or Slowbro’s Scald cripples Mimikyu. Entei’s Extreme Speed is a Normal move, which cannot hurt a Ghost.
  • Choice Scarf Kleavor and Krookodile. At 442 and 466 Speed they outspeed both natures, and Krookodile’s Intimidate (59.0% of its sets) takes one stage off Mimikyu’s Attack on entry, which my calcs ignore.

Mimikyu in OU

In OU, Mimikyu is a niche pick: it ranks #101 at the 1695 cutoff with 0.58% usage. The most-used spread is still Jolly 0/252/0/0/4/252 (34.9% of sets at the 1825 cutoff, per Smogon’s OU stats), but Impish and Brave bulky builds take another 41% and Swords Dance appears on only 38.9% of sets, behind Curse and Trick Room. The Jolly-versus-Adamant question above is an RU question; in OU the first decision is whether you are running the Swords Dance set at all.

FAQ

Is Jolly or Adamant better for Mimikyu?

Jolly. The Jolly spreads Smogon lists add up to 93.4% of Mimikyu at the 1630 RU cutoff, Jolly outspeeds unscarfed Kleavor, Krookodile and Timid Yanmega, and it ties the mirror. Adamant improves seven knockouts, mostly against slow walls Mimikyu already outspeeds, and the only Adamant spread listed at that cutoff is 2.0%.

Should Mimikyu hold Life Orb or Red Card?

Life Orb is the damage item (59.5% of sets) and every damage calc from Mimikyu here assumes it. Red Card (37.4%) trades damage for control: Smogon’s analysis says Disguise can “force them out with Red Card”, which makes Mimikyu an answer to setup sweepers. Pick Red Card if your team lacks one, Life Orb if it does not.

Should Mimikyu run Play Rough?

Only as a swap. It is the sole guaranteed OHKO on Chesnaught and Umbreon, but eight of the top 30 resist it and it misses 10% of the time. Shadow Claw and Drain Punch cover more of the ladder between them.

Does Disguise block status moves?

No. It only answers damage dealt by moves, so Will-O-Wisp and Thunder Wave still land on a Mimikyu with its disguise intact, and Smogon says a burn from Entei’s Sacred Fire or Slowbro’s Scald cripples it.

Does this apply to VGC or doubles?

I have not checked it. The data here is Smogon’s Scarlet/Violet singles ladder at Level 100, and Level 50 Speed values differ, so rebuild the speed tiers before copying the nature.

Verified against Smogon’s October 2026 RU stats and Pokémon Showdown’s game data on 2 November 2026. Nothing here was ladder-tested by me: the numbers come from Smogon’s usage files and the Smogon damage calculator, and usage shifts every month.
