Best Blaziken Nature and Moveset: Adamant Trails Jolly by 50 Speed at +2 and Is Still the Pick

Run Adamant. A max-Speed Adamant Blaziken has 259 Speed when it arrives and 518 after two Speed Boost turns. Jolly has 284 and 568. That 50-point gap at +2 is the whole price of Adamant, and it buys 33 more Attack (372 against 339) on every hit. Smogon’s Scarlet/Violet Strategy Dex reaches the same verdict for Gen 9 OU: “Adamant is preferable to maximize its damage output,” with Jolly kept for a few named Speed checks. The set is Swords Dance, Flare Blitz, Close Combat and Protect on Life Orb, with 252 Attack, 4 Defense and 252 Speed.

Everything below is Gen 9 OU singles at level 100, where Blaziken is a niche wallbreaker (1% usage, rank #76 on Pikalytics’ Gen 9 OU data). Numbers were checked on 2 November 2026 against Smogon, Pikalytics and PokemonDB. I ran every damage roll through Smogon’s open-source damage calculator, and the Speed table is my own arithmetic from PokemonDB base stats. A doubles section near the end covers Pokémon Champions.

Quick Start: The Best Blaziken Build

Use Adamant with the hidden ability Speed Boost and a Life Orb unless one of the exceptions below applies. PokemonDB lists Blaze as the regular ability and Speed Boost as the hidden one, so check which you caught.

  1. Build: Adamant, Speed Boost, Life Orb, 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe. That is the spread on Smogon’s OU set.
  2. Moves: Swords Dance, Flare Blitz, Close Combat, Protect.
  3. Timing: bring Blaziken in on a free turn or after a KO. Protect on turn 1, Swords Dance on turn 2, first attack on turn 3 at +2 Speed and +2 Attack.
  4. Take Jolly only if a named check keeps beating you: Booster Energy Iron Valiant to the first attack on turn 3, or Dragapult and Zamazenta to Swords Dance on turn 2 when you can’t afford the hit first. Those are the three checks Smogon names.
  5. Swap Protect for Stone Edge or Knock Off when Dragonite walls the set, or when Moltres or Pecharunt take two hits you can’t spare.
  6. Use Air Balloon instead of Life Orb if your opponents lean on Ground-types like Landorus-Therian and Great Tusk.

TeraFighting or Fire (Ghost as a tech)Smogon: boosts a STAB; Ghost blanks Body Press and Extreme Speed

The table’s single biggest takeaway: every slot except the fourth move is settled, and Pikalytics’ usage figures (Close Combat 97.8%, Flare Blitz 90.6%, Swords Dance 90.2%, Protect 70.6%) show the community agrees.

How Speed Boost Counts Turns

Speed Boost raises Speed by one stage at the end of each turn, per Serebii, and one stage is worth far more than any nature. Smogon’s stat-stage table gives the multipliers: +1 is ×1.5 and +2 is ×2, applied to the whole stat. A nature adds 10% to the Speed stat once; two Speed Boosts add 100%.

The detail that changes your plan is the switch-in turn. Pokémon Showdown’s source code only boosts a Pokémon that has already been active for a full turn (if (pokemon.activeTurns)), and the counter starts at zero when it enters. So on Pokémon Showdown, where Smogon’s OU data comes from, Blaziken gets nothing on the turn it arrives. I have not tested the cartridge games, so treat that as the ladder rule. The timeline:

  1. Turn 0: Blaziken switches in and takes whatever comes. No boost. Speed stays 259 (Adamant).
  2. Turn 1: Protect. Blaziken moves first anyway, and the end-of-turn boost puts it at +1.
  3. Turn 2: Swords Dance at +1 Speed. The boost moves it to +2.
  4. Turn 3: first attack, at +2 Speed and +2 Attack.

That is why Smogon’s set uses Protect “to safely activate Speed Boost” and dodge revenge kills from fast Pokémon like Landorus-Therian and Tornadus-Therian.

A related Speed-doubling mechanic sits behind a very different build in our Sceptile guide. Sceptile’s Unburden doubles Speed in one trigger, and that guide lands on the same rule: default to Adamant unless one specific Speed check is costing you games. Blaziken just reaches its double more slowly, one stage at a time.

Adamant vs Jolly: The Turn-by-Turn Speed Table

Jolly outspeeds more Pokémon at every single stage, but the Pokémon it adds shrink to a handful of boosted or scarfed targets by turn 3, and to none on my benchmark list by turn 4. The gap itself grows (25, 38, 50, 63 points at +0 to +3); the number of Pokémon living inside it falls.

Max-Speed Blaziken at level 100: Speed after each Speed Boost, Adamant against Jolly. The gap grows from 25 to 63 points, but fewer Pokémon sit inside it.

Read the table as a decision about turn 3. Adamant at +2 already outspeeds every unscarfed, unboosted Pokémon I checked (the fastest is Dragapult at 421 with a Speed-raising nature), and on my list Jolly’s extra 50 points only change the result against Booster Energy users and Choice Scarf users. The list is a sample, not a census, so check the very fast Pokémon on your own opponents’ teams too. Turn 2 matters less than it looks, because the only thing it decides is whether you get hit before or after Swords Dance.

The benchmarks come from PokemonDB base Speeds (Dragapult 142, Zamazenta 138, Iron Bundle 136, Iron Valiant 116) at level 100, 31 IVs and 252 EVs. VGC plays at level 50, where stats are lower, so rerun the arithmetic before copying these thresholds.

What Adamant Buys Back: Damage

Adamant’s 33 extra Attack is worth about 10% more damage on every hit, and in the calc it flips one clear outcome in my wall table: Flare Blitz on a bulky Gliscor. Adamant rolls 91.8–108.2% and knocks it out on 8 of 16 rolls, while Jolly rolls 84.2–99.2% and never does. Every other wall keeps the same KO result with either nature, except that Jolly’s 2HKO on Moltres is not guaranteed (about 91% of roll pairs), so Adamant’s edge is steady but thin.

That is a different job from the one in our Swampert guide, where Adamant and Careful are two separate roles in one body. Blaziken has one role, so the nature question is only how much Speed to trade for damage. Our Lucario moveset guide makes a related Swords Dance case for another Fighting-type sweeper and runs Jolly: Lucario has Extreme Speed to cover priority and no ability that climbs Speed, so it spends its nature slot differently.

The ladder agrees. Of the EV spreads Pikalytics’ Gen 9 OU data lists for Blaziken, Adamant spreads add up to 72.5% and Jolly spreads to 19.7%. Mild and Rash special sets are the next largest group, at about 5% together.

The Best Blaziken Moveset: Four Slots, One Plan

The moveset is Swords Dance, Flare Blitz, Close Combat and Protect, because each slot solves a separate problem: setup, two STABs that neutral-hit most of the metagame, and a free Speed Boost turn. Here is what each does.

  • Protect: +4 priority, so Blaziken is safe on turn 1 whatever is faster. Accuracy drops by a third on consecutive use, so never chain it. Smogon also notes it shuts down Lokix’s First Impression.
  • Swords Dance: raises Attack by two stages, which is ×2. Blaziken’s 372 Attack becomes 744 in effect.
  • Flare Blitz: 120 power, 100 accuracy, but you take about a third of the damage dealt as recoil.
  • Close Combat: 120 power, 100 accuracy, and it lowers your Defense and Special Defense one stage each. After two uses Blaziken’s 177 Defense is 88.

Recoil is the hidden cost of this set. A Flare Blitz that knocks out a full-HP Zapdos (384 HP) costs Blaziken roughly 127 HP in recoil. Showdown’s item code adds Life Orb’s 10% of max HP, about 30 on Blaziken’s 301 HP. That one attack takes around 157 HP, 52% of Blaziken’s health. Smogon’s analysis says Blaziken “usually fails to end games” because of that recoil and its weakness to priority, and Close Combat is the cleaner choice whenever a target takes similar damage from either move.

Pikalytics shows the fourth slot is the only contested one: Protect is 70.6% against Knock Off at roughly 16–17%. The next section covers when to swap.

Damage Rolls on Common Walls

With one Swords Dance, Life Orb Adamant Blaziken 2HKOs six of the eight walls below on every roll and one-hit knocks out Zapdos on all of them; Dragonite is the exception and needs three hits. These numbers come from Smogon’s open-source damage calculator: Blaziken at +2 Attack with 252 Attack, targets with 252 HP and 252 Defense and a Defense-raising nature, and no hazards or weather.

Life Orb Blaziken at +2 Attack, Adamant against Jolly, computed with Smogon’s damage calculator. Targets: 252 HP / 252 Def.

Dragonite is the real wall of the Protect set. Multiscale cuts damage at full HP, so the first hit lands for 25–30% and the second, no longer reduced, for about twice that, which still needs a third hit. That fits Smogon naming Dragonite and Moltres as Blaziken’s would-be checks. Smogon also lists Great Tusk among Life Orb’s +2 OHKOs, which my max-bulk model does not reproduce, so treat Great Tusk as a call that depends on its investment. Zamazenta’s Dauntless Shield raises its Defense on entry; I modelled one stage. Stone Edge and Knock Off, in the next section, are the answers to the walls this table leaves standing.

When to Swap Protect for Stone Edge or Knock Off

Swap Protect out only when a specific wall shuts the set down, because the free Speed Boost turn is what makes the build work. Smogon lists both options for the fourth slot, and the calc shows what each one buys.

  • Stone Edge (100 power, 80 accuracy): Moltres takes 237–279% because Rock is 4× against Fire/Flying, so it dies through any bulk. Dragonite takes 57–67% through Multiscale, and 114–134% once Multiscale is gone, so Stone Edge turns Dragonite from a three-hit wall into a two-hit one. The 20% miss chance is the price.
  • Knock Off (65 power, 97.5 against a target holding an item): Pecharunt takes 77.4–91.1%, better than Flare Blitz’s 71.8–84.5%, and it removes the item. Smogon says it also cripples Dragonite and Moltres and knocks out Dragapult.

Dropping Protect costs Blaziken its revenge-kill insurance against Landorus-Therian and Tornadus-Therian, and Smogon’s own description of the team style that can run without it is Aurora Veil, where doubled bulk lets Blaziken “drop Protect for a third attack without too much drawback.” Without screens, keep Protect.

Item and Tera Type

Life Orb is the default, with Air Balloon as the matchup-specific pick. Smogon says Life Orb lets Blaziken OHKO Zapdos, Great Tusk and specially defensive Gliscor at +2, while Air Balloon gives Blaziken a way to switch into and set up on Landorus-Therian and Great Tusk. Tera Fighting or Fire powers up a STAB, and Smogon highlights Tera Ghost because it gives immunity to Zamazenta’s Body Press and Dragonite’s Extreme Speed. Blaziken has little defensive utility and Smogon calls its weakness to priority “extreme,” so a Tera that blanks a priority move is worth more than it looks.

Mega Blaziken and Doubles: A Different Game

In doubles Blaziken plays a different role, so the singles nature argument does not carry over: it is a support-and-pressure Pokémon, not a Swords Dance sweeper. Pikalytics’ Pokémon Champions VGC 2026 tournament data lists Blaziken’s top moves as Detect (59.6%), Aura Sphere (49.1%), Coaching (45.6%) and Heat Wave (43.9%), with Swords Dance at 8.8% and Focus Sash at 59.6% of items. Its recorded win rate is about 49%.

Mega Blaziken’s page shows a more direct attacker: Flare Blitz 94.7%, Close Combat 90.9%, Rock Slide 82.6% and Detect 63.6%, with Swords Dance at 6.1% and a win rate of about 44%. PokemonDB lists Mega Blaziken at 160 Attack and 100 base Speed (up from 120 and 80), with Speed Boost kept. If you play Champions, copy those move lists, not the singles set above. Neither page shows a nature split, so I make no Adamant-or-Jolly claim for doubles.

Decision Tree

  • Is a specific Pokémon beating you to the first attack on turn 3 (Booster Energy Iron Valiant, a scarfed Zamazenta), or to Swords Dance on turn 2 (Dragapult, Zamazenta) when that hit decides the game? Yes: Jolly. No: Adamant.
  • Is a Ground-type stopping your setup? Yes: Air Balloon.
  • Is Dragonite walling you, or are Moltres and Pecharunt costing you a second hit, and you have no screens? Yes: Stone Edge or Knock Off over Protect.
  • Is the opponent’s team full of priority users? Yes: keep Protect and plan to chip rather than sweep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Adamant or Jolly better for Blaziken?

Adamant is better by default, because by turn 3 the Pokémon on my benchmark list that sit between 518 and 568 Speed are all boosted or scarfed. Jolly is 50 Speed ahead at +2 (568 against 518), but Adamant still outspeeds every unscarfed, unboosted Pokémon I checked at that stage and hits about 10% harder. Choose Jolly only for a named check, such as Smogon’s Dragapult, Zamazenta and Booster Energy Iron Valiant.

Does Blaziken get a Speed Boost on the turn it switches in?

On Pokémon Showdown, no: the code only boosts a Pokémon that has been active for a full turn. That is why the plan spends turn 1 on Protect and attacks on turn 3.

Should Blaziken run Protect or Stone Edge?

Protect, unless a specific wall demands the swap. Protect is on 70.6% of OU sets because it pays for the setup turns; Stone Edge fixes Moltres and Dragonite but gives up the free boost and carries a 20% miss chance.

Is Blaziken good in Gen 9 OU?

It is a niche pick. Smogon calls it a wallbreaker that “finds a place on some offense teams,” and Pikalytics ranks it #76 at 1% usage. The recoil and priority weakness cap how often it finishes games, so it fits teams that want it to break walls for a partner such as Kingambit.
