What Makes a Good Great League Team?

The Great League caps Pokemon at 1500 CP, which fundamentally changes which Pokemon are viable compared to Master League. Bulk matters more than raw power, and the meta rewards Pokemon that can generate energy fast, pressure shields, and cover each other’s weaknesses. I’ve played Great League across multiple seasons and the one constant is this: individual Pokemon strength means nothing if your team has no role balance.

Every strong Great League team is built around three roles:

  • Lead — Your opener. Needs to win or break even against a wide range of opponents, generate energy fast, and ideally force the opponent to use a shield early.
  • Safe Switch (Switch) — The Pokemon you pivot to when your lead is in trouble. Must have solid neutral coverage and survive being sent in cold, often against an unfavourable type matchup.
  • Closer — Your last Pokemon. Closers shine in shield-down scenarios where they can freely spam charge moves. Typically has strong bulk or a powerful spam attack.

A team without a reliable safe switch will haemorrhage HP whenever your lead loses the opening matchup. A team without a closer loses games it should win when shields run dry. Get the roles right first, then optimise the individual Pokemon within each slot.

Current Great League Meta: Top Picks

The meta as of early 2026 is diverse but a handful of Pokemon consistently dominate tournament results and ladder play. Here are the top picks you need to know:

S-Tier Picks

  • Azumarill — The quintessential Great League staple. Water/Fairy typing gives it very few weaknesses (only Poison and Electric land super-effective hits). Bubble generates energy fast, and Play Rough + Ice Beam covers almost everything. Runs in all three roles depending on team need.
  • Medicham — Fighter/Psychic. Counter is one of the fastest energy-generating fast moves in the game, enabling frequent Power-Up Punch (PuP) to stack attack buffs. Ice Punch covers Flying types. Medicham’s ability to sweep a team after stacking PuP buffs makes it one of the highest-ceiling leads in the format.
  • Galarian Stunfisk — Ground/Steel typing gives it 10 resistances and only three weaknesses (Water, Fighting, Ground). Mud Shot generates energy at a blistering rate. Rock Slide baits shields cheaply while Earthquake closes games. A staple safe switch and closer.
  • Mandibuzz — Dark/Flying. Exceptional bulk and a diverse movepool including Foul Play, Rock Tomb, and Aerial Ace. Handles Ghosts, Psychics, and Fighting types that threaten Medicham. One of the best safe switches in the current meta.

A-Tier Picks

  • Walrein — Ice/Water. Powder Snow generates energy fast and Icicle Spear is a cheap two-bar move for constant shield pressure. Walrein’s bulk lets it tank hits while draining opponent shields. Excellent closer.
  • Registeel — Pure Steel. Lock On charges energy almost instantly, enabling the expensive but devastating Focus Blast and Zap Cannon. A tanky closer that is nearly impossible to KO quickly once shields are down.
  • Swampert — Water/Ground. Mud Shot into Hydro Cannon (Community Day move — Elite Charged TM required) + Earthquake is a tremendous combination. Only weakness is Grass. Swampert is one of the best closers in Great League history.
  • Clodsire — Poison/Ground. Tanky, only weak to Ground. Poison Sting generates energy steadily and Acid Spray debuffs opponent defence — a game-changing move that turns subsequent charge moves into KO threats. Strong safe switch.
  • Annihilape — Fighting/Ghost. Shadow Claw generates energy quickly. Rage Fist is a Ghost-type move that gains power each time Annihilape faints — unique mechanic that makes it a dangerous closer late in battle.
  • Altaria — Dragon/Flying. Dragon Breath is a consistent fast move and Moonblast covers Dragon types. Altaria’s typing and bulk make it a reliable, accessible pick.

3 Ready-to-Use Great League Team Compositions

Team 1: The Classic Core (Recommended for beginners)

Azumarill (Lead) | Galarian Stunfisk (Safe Switch) | Medicham (Closer)

This trio has been a meta fixture for multiple seasons and remains effective in 2026. Azumarill leads to apply Fairy pressure and generate Bubble energy. Galarian Stunfisk pivots in against Electric, Poison, or Rock threats, tanking hits and spamming Rock Slide to bait shields. Medicham closes by stacking Power-Up Punch buffs once shields are gone.

  • Azumarill: Bubble / Play Rough / Ice Beam
  • Galarian Stunfisk: Mud Shot / Rock Slide / Earthquake
  • Medicham: Counter / Power-Up Punch / Ice Punch

Weakness: Grass types can threaten both Azumarill and Galarian Stunfisk. Consider keeping Medicham’s Ice Punch ready for Grass threats.

Team 2: Bulk and Debuff (Great for shield-heavy play)

Clodsire (Lead) | Mandibuzz (Safe Switch) | Walrein (Closer)

An extremely tanky team that wins by outlasting opponents. Clodsire leads with Acid Spray to debuff the opponent’s defence, making your subsequent charge moves hit harder. Mandibuzz covers Psychic and Ghost threats that Clodsire struggles with. Walrein closes by spamming Icicle Spear to drain the last of the opponent’s shields before landing an Earthquake for the finish.

  • Clodsire: Poison Sting / Acid Spray / Sludge Bomb
  • Mandibuzz: Snarl / Foul Play / Rock Tomb
  • Walrein: Powder Snow / Icicle Spear / Earthquake

Weakness: Low burst damage means this team can lose to opponents who bait your shields and outlast your debuffs. Mandibuzz’s Rock Tomb helps mitigate shield baiting.

Team 3: Steel Core (Budget-friendly and powerful)

Medicham (Lead) | Registeel (Safe Switch) | Swampert (Closer)

This composition is excellent for players who don’t have access to Galarian Stunfisk or Azumarill at high IV. Medicham leads aggressively to burn shields with Power-Up Punch. Registeel pivots in as a nearly unkillable safe switch — Lock On charges energy so fast that Focus Blast becomes a constant threat. Swampert closes with Hydro Cannon spam once shields are down.

  • Medicham: Counter / Power-Up Punch / Ice Punch
  • Registeel: Lock On / Focus Blast / Zap Cannon
  • Swampert: Mud Shot / Hydro Cannon* / Earthquake (*Elite Charged TM required)

Weakness: Grass types threaten both Registeel and Swampert. Include Ice Punch on Medicham and position it to handle Grass leads.

Advanced Tips: Shield Baiting and Energy Management

Shield Baiting

Shield baiting means using a cheap, low-energy charge move to force the opponent to use a shield — then immediately following up with your expensive, high-damage move while they’re unshielded. The classic example is Galarian Stunfisk’s Rock Slide (45 energy) baiting a shield so that Earthquake (65 energy) lands unblocked.

The psychology matters: opponents who have burned shields early will make desperate decisions late. A good baiter is a Pokemon with one cheap move and one expensive move — not two moves of similar cost.

Energy Management

Energy carries over when you switch Pokemon. If your lead has built up 80 energy and you switch out, that energy is preserved when they switch back in. This means deliberate switching — rather than purely reactive switching — can set your Pokemon up to fire a charge move the moment they re-enter battle.

Conversely, if your opponent switches to reset an energy advantage, don’t blindly follow with your own switch. Sometimes it’s better to keep your current Pokemon in to maintain your energy lead, even if the typing matchup is slightly unfavourable.

IVs Matter — But Not How You Think

In the Great League, the best IVs are not 15/15/15. Because of how CP scaling works at the 1500 cap, a Pokemon with 0 attack IVs and high defence/stamina IVs can be powered up to a higher level — giving it more total bulk for the same CP. This is a significant advantage in a format where bulk wins games.
