Neptilius has a 145 Attack stat — tied for the second-highest in the game. Its strongest attack hits for 200 power. Jetragon’s Attack stat is five points lower at 140, but its Level 60 move, Meteorain, hits for 700 power on a 30-second cooldown. Run the math and Jetragon puts out roughly 23.3 power per second from that single move; Neptilius, despite the flashier stat line, can’t touch it with Thalassonic Laser alone.[8][9]
Most “best combat Pals” lists rank by raw Attack stat and stop there. That’s a problem, because Attack stat and actual damage output only sometimes line up — and in a game where each Tower Boss now dies or doesn’t inside a 5-minute clock (down from 10 pre-1.0), the gap between “looks strong” and “kills the boss” matters.[1] This guide ranks Palworld’s best combat Pals by Attack stat, signature move power, and element, then matches each one to the specific boss it’s built to beat. Verified against Palworld 1.0 (build 1.0.0, released July 10, 2026, level cap 80).[1]
The Quick Answer: Best Combat Pal for Every Tower Boss
Palworld 1.0 has nine Tower Bosses, up from the original five. Each has an elemental weakness except the final one.[2] Here’s the fastest counter-pick for each fight, ranked by Priority (how much the type advantage actually swings the fight) rather than just “is this Pal good.”
| Tower Boss | Level | Weak To | Best Counter Pal | Priority | Avoid If |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zoe & Grizzbolt (Electric) | 10-15 | Ground | Anubis (130 ATK) | High | Under Lv55, no field-boss kill yet |
| Lily & Lyleen (Grass) | 20-25 | Fire | Blazamut Ryu (130 ATK) | Medium | Pre-late-game — see Fire section for a substitute |
| Axel & Orserk (Dragon/Electric) | 30-40 | Ice, Ground | Frostallion or Anubis | High | Neither is caught yet — use raw levels instead |
| Marcus & Faleris (Fire) | 40-45 | Water | Neptilius (145 ATK) | Medium | Neptilius not caught — its edge is smaller than its stat implies anyway |
| Victor & Shadowbeak (Dark) | 50 | Dragon | Jetragon (140 ATK) | High | No mount weapon skill unlocked — see Dragon section |
| Saya & Selyne (Dark) | 55 | Dragon | Jetragon or Blazamut Ryu | High | Same Jetragon caveat applies |
| Bjorn & Bastigor (Ice) | 58-60 | Fire | Blazamut Ryu (130 ATK) | Medium | Fire damage alone won’t offset a big level gap |
| Auri & Shaolong (Water/Dragon) | 68 | Electric, Ice | Grizzbolt or Frostallion | Medium | Grizzbolt’s Attack (100) is low — pair with a tank |
| Zenara & Astralym (Typeless) | 80 | None | Jetragon or Necromus | High | No type edge exists here — raw DPS is the only lever |
Tower boss levels and weaknesses are cross-referenced across multiple current 1.0 guides and converge on the same nine-boss structure; treat them as a reliable community consensus rather than an official Pocketpair chart, since the developer hasn’t published its own weakness table.
How We Ranked These (Attack Stat Alone Lies)
Every Pal in Palworld starts at the same baseline (500 HP / 100 Attack / 50 Defense at level 0) and scales from there based on species-specific growth values, which is why two Pals with wildly different combat reputations can post similar Attack numbers at max level.[10] That’s step one of this ranking. Step two is checking what each Pal’s actual signature move does with that Attack stat — because a high stat wasted on a weak move underperforms a lower stat backing a strong one.
The clearest example: Necromus (145 Attack, Dark) learns Dark Laser at level 50 — 450 power on what multiple independent sources put at a 20-second cooldown, or 22.5 power per second. Jetragon (140 Attack, Dragon) learns Meteorain at level 60 — 700 power on a 30-second cooldown, 23.3 power per second.[3][5][9] Necromus has the higher stat. Jetragon has the higher sustained output. Neither gap is huge, but it’s the opposite of what a stat-only ranking would tell you, and it’s why this guide treats Attack stat as a starting filter, not the final word.

Ground: Anubis Beats the Early Electric Towers
Anubis (130 Attack) is the single best answer to Palworld’s Electric-type towers — Zoe & Grizzbolt at the start and the Electric half of Axel & Orserk’s dual typing later. It spawns as a field boss in the desert region around level 55, well past when most players first meet Zoe & Grizzbolt, so the honest advice is: fight that first tower with whatever you’ve got, then bring Anubis back for Orserk and any repeat Electric-boss content.
Anubis’s partner skill, Guardian of the Desert, converts your own attacks to Ground element and adds roughly 30-50% Attack while mounted, with occasional evasive sidesteps built in — which is what lets it punch above its Attack stat against a same-level target instead of just trading hits evenly.
Our full Anubis guide breaks down its exact moveset and why it trades survivability for damage — pair it with a tankier front-liner rather than running it solo.
Fire: Blazamut Ryu (and What to Use Before You Have It)
Blazamut Ryu’s dual Dragon/Fire typing and 130 Attack[6] make it the strongest all-around Fire counter, covering both Lily & Lyleen (Grass) and Bjorn & Bastigor (Ice). The catch: it’s a late-game catch, and Lyleen shows up around level 20-25 — long before most players have any business fighting a Dragon-tier Pal.
For that early fight, any Fire-typed starter Pal clears Lyleen fine; the type advantage does the heavy lifting more than the Pal’s individual stat line. Save Blazamut Ryu for Bastigor, where the level gap is smaller and its higher Attack actually matters. Its partner skill, Dragon Kaiser, boosts Dragon-element damage specifically while mounted — meaning the Fire-type advantage against Bastigor and the partner-skill boost don’t actually stack on the same hit. Treat Blazamut Ryu as two separate tools: a Fire attacker against Ice/Grass towers, and a Dragon attacker everywhere else.
Water: Neptilius’s Stat Line Overpromises
Neptilius ties for the second-highest Attack stat in the game at 145, and it’s Water-typed — the correct counter to Marcus & Faleris’s Fire tower.[8][10] It’s also an Alpha-only wild spawn on the Isle of the Glacial Core, meaning you can’t breed your way to one; you have to beat it in the field first.[8]
Here’s the honest caveat: Neptilius’s own signature move, Thalassonic Laser, is only 200 power at level 60 — well below what its Attack stat would suggest. In practice it still wins the Faleris fight on type advantage alone, but don’t expect the raw burst its stat sheet implies. If you haven’t caught it yet, any Water-typed Pal with a same-level moveset closes the gap almost as well.
Ice: Frostallion Covers the Dragon-Weak Gap
Frostallion (140 Attack, Ice) is the cleanest counter to Axel & Orserk’s Dragon/Electric typing, which is weak to both Ice and Ground. Its level-50 move Blizzard Spike hits for 450 Ice power, and its level-55 move Holy Burst hits harder still at 700 power — but Holy Burst is Neutral-typed, so it skips the type-advantage multiplier entirely. Lead with Blizzard Spike against Orserk specifically; save Holy Burst for fights where no type edge exists, like the final boss.[4]
Frostallion Noct, the level 60-65 Dark-element variant found in the Sealed Realm of the Black Pegasus on Feybreak Island, converts your attacks to Dark element while mounted and adds roughly 40% Attack at partner-skill rank 5 — making it a strong pick for the Dragon-weak Dark towers instead, if you’d rather run one Pal across multiple fights.[12]
Electric: Grizzbolt Is Still Worth Catching Post-1.0
Grizzbolt’s Attack stat is modest at 100 — the lowest of any Pal in this guide — but it’s still the practical pick against Auri & Shaolong’s Water/Dragon typing, which is weak to both Electric and Ice. Its level-50 move Lightning Bolt hits for 450 power, respectable output from a Pal most players catch early for its rapid-fire partner skill rather than late-game raw stats.[7] Don’t run Grizzbolt solo against a level 68 boss — its lower Attack means it needs a tankier partner Pal absorbing hits while it fires.
Dragon and Raw Power: Jetragon vs. Necromus for the Dark Towers and the World Tree
Dragon beats Dark, which makes Jetragon (140 Attack) and its Meteorain the top pick against both Victor & Shadowbeak and Saya & Selyne. One real limitation: Jetragon’s strongest moves are mount skills, which lock you out of your own equipped weapons while riding — fine for a pure Pal-damage strategy, worse if your build leans on weapon DPS.
For Zenara & Astralym, the level 80 World Tree finale, there’s no elemental weakness to exploit — it’s completely typeless.[2] That’s where the Jetragon-vs-Necromus math from earlier actually decides the pick: Jetragon’s Meteorain (23.3 power/sec) edges out Necromus’s Dark Laser (22.5 power/sec) by a narrow margin, but Necromus’s twin-summon synergy with Paladius lets you field two attackers where Jetragon fields one.[9][12] Read our dedicated Jetragon guide for the full mount-versus-weapon tradeoff before committing a saddle slot to it.
There’s a third option worth naming: Paladius. At 120 Attack it’s well behind Jetragon and Necromus on paper, but its combat design is built around a twin-summon mechanic that pairs it with Necromus for a genuine two-on-one advantage rather than a single Pal’s solo DPS. If you’re already running Necromus, Paladius is a stronger second slot than a second Jetragon would be — you’re not trying to stack two copies of the same mount skill, you’re covering the gap between burst damage and sustained pressure.
Best Combat Pal by Player Type
| Player Type | Priority Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New player | Whatever type-counters the current tower | Don’t detour for Anubis or Jetragon before level 30 — the type advantage from a common early Pal outweighs a stat-optimal Pal you can’t reach yet. |
| Casual player | Anubis + Frostallion | Two catches cover four of the nine towers (Electric, both halves of Orserk’s dual type, and Ice-weak fights) without a breeding project. |
| Hardcore / optimiser | Jetragon + Necromus, bred with Legend/Ferocious/Swift | Chasing exact power-per-second numbers only pays off once passives are optimized — see our passive skills guide for the breeding chain. |
| Completionist | All nine counters, including Neptilius and Frostallion Noct | Both are Alpha-only or Sealed Realm spawns with no breeding shortcut — budget separate boss-fight trips for each. |
Build a 4-Pal Combat Squad That Covers Every Weakness
If you’re gearing up for a full tower run rather than one boss at a time, this four-Pal roster covers every weakness on the list with only one overlap (Ice, doubled deliberately since it counters two separate towers):
- Anubis (Ground) — Zoe & Grizzbolt, half of Orserk
- Frostallion (Ice) — half of Orserk, Bjorn & Bastigor’s Fire weakness aside, doubles as a mount
- Blazamut Ryu (Fire/Dragon) — Lily & Lyleen, Bjorn & Bastigor
- Jetragon (Dragon) — Victor & Shadowbeak, Saya & Selyne, Zenara & Astralym
This leaves Marcus & Faleris (needs Water) and Auri & Shaolong (needs Electric or Ice) uncovered by a dedicated type pick — Frostallion’s Ice typing already answers Shaolong, and for Faleris, swap in Neptilius once you’ve beaten its Alpha spawn. Five Pals total gets full nine-tower coverage.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don’t chase Bellanoir for this list. At 150 Attack it posts the single highest stat in the game, but it’s a Raid Boss you can’t catch mid-fight — the only way to own one is hatching the egg reward after defeating it, so it doesn’t belong in a “go catch this” combat-Pal ranking.[10]
- Don’t assume Mammorest is a top DPS pick just because it’s on every “best for combat” list. Its Attack stat is 85 — the lowest of any Pal covered here — and its combat reputation comes from AoE crowd control, not single-target damage. Use it to clear trash mobs, not to solo a Tower Boss.[11]
- Don’t mount Jetragon into a boss fight that needs sustained weapon fire. Its best moves lock your own weapon slot; if your build depends on gun or bow damage, use a Pal whose partner skill doesn’t take that away.
FAQ
Is Jetragon actually the best combat Pal in Palworld 1.0?
For the specific fights it’s built for — Dark-type towers and the typeless World Tree finale — yes, by a narrow but real margin over Necromus. Outside those fights it’s not automatically the best pick; a Ground or Ice Pal with the correct type advantage will out-damage it against an Electric or Dragon-weak boss even with a lower Attack stat, because the type multiplier matters more than a 5-10 point stat gap.
Should I always pick the Pal with the highest Attack stat?
No. Neptilius proves this directly — a top-three Attack stat backed by a comparatively weak signature move. Check what a Pal’s actual highest-power move does before assuming the stat sheet tells the whole story.
Do Ground Pals still counter Electric bosses after the 1.0 rebalance?
Yes — the type chart itself wasn’t touched in 1.0, only Work Suitability, Condensing requirements, and boss timers changed.[1] Anubis remains the strongest Ground-type answer to both Electric towers.
Why does this guide skip Bellanoir and other superbosses?
Because you can’t catch them mid-encounter. A combat-Pal ranking should only include Pals you can actually add to your party — Bellanoir’s egg-hatch requirement puts it in a different category from every Pal on this list.
Is it worth breeding for passives before chasing these specific Pals?
Only if you’re already committed to the hardcore/optimiser path. A Legend/Ferocious/Swift passive spread adds a meaningful percentage to whichever base Attack stat a Pal already has, but it does nothing to change which element counters which boss — get the right species first, then breed passives onto it, not the other way around.
