Search “Palworld Anubis breeding” and half the results still repeat the same dead recipe: catch a Penking, catch a Bushi, breed them, done. That combo worked before the 1.0 update. It doesn’t anymore — Penking + Bushi now hatches a Sibelyx, and at least one major guide has quietly walked the old advice back while still leaving it half-visible on the page.[11] Anubis also has 234 different parent pairs that can produce it, which is exactly why most breeding calculators just dump you into a search box instead of naming one. There is a right answer for “which pair should I actually use,” and it isn’t about hatch speed — it’s about which two Pals are cheapest to get your hands on in the first place.
Quick Start: Breed an Anubis in 4 Steps
- Catch one Azurmane (Electric type) and one Roujay (Dark type) — either can be male or female, gender doesn’t affect the outcome.[9][10]
- Build a Breeding Farm (unlocks at Tech Level 19) and place both Pals inside.[14]
- Bake a Cake and load it into the farm’s feed box; the pair lays a Huge Rocky Egg.[1][7]
- Incubate for 72 hours at baseline comfort, or as little as 36 hours at Optimal (100%) comfort — it hatches into Anubis, no roll to fail.[3]
Why Azurmane + Roujay Works (And Why Penking + Bushi Doesn’t Anymore)
Anubis isn’t a fixed-combo Pal like some Legendaries — it’s rank-based. Every breedable Pal has a hidden Breeding Rank (also shown as “Combi” rank on some trackers), and pairing two parents runs Child_Rank = floor((Rank A + Rank B + 1) / 2), with the game then locking in whichever eligible species sits closest to that number.[2] Anubis’s own rank is 480, confirmed independently by two separate Pal databases.[7][8] That’s the number any candidate pair needs to land near.
Azurmane sits at rank 420 and Roujay at 530. Run them through the formula: floor((420 + 530 + 1) / 2) = 475 — five points off Anubis’s 480, close enough that the game locks it in as the nearest match every time, with no randomness in which species hatches.[2][9][10] What makes this pair the one worth using isn’t that math specifically — plenty of the other 233 combinations land just as close. It’s that Azurmane and Roujay are the two lowest-rarity Pals in the entire list, rarity 7 and rarity 5 respectively, out of every parent that can produce Anubis.[14] Rarity is the real bottleneck in Palworld breeding: two mid-game Pals you can catch on a normal playthrough beat a mathematically-equivalent pair that requires farming something end-game-rare. Plenty of the other 233 combinations land on Anubis just as cleanly on paper — the rank formula doesn’t care which two species you feed it, as long as the average lands close enough — but most of them lean on a parent that’s rarer, higher-level, or gated behind more progression than Azurmane or Roujay. A combo being mathematically valid isn’t the same as being worth using; the formula only tells you a pairing is possible, not that it’s the cheapest way to get there, which is why a breeding calculator returning 234 results without ranking them by cost isn’t actually answering the question most players are asking.[14]
On the Penking + Bushi problem specifically: that pairing (ranks 520 and 640) was the community’s go-to Anubis recipe before the 1.0 update rebalanced breeding ranks across most of the Paldeck. Run the same pairing today and floor((520 + 640 + 1) / 2) = 580, which now lands on Sibelyx instead.[2][11] The math didn’t change — the underlying rank values did. If you’ve seen a guide, forum post, or AI-generated summary listing Penking + Bushi for Anubis, it’s repeating pre-1.0 information that’s still circulating months after the patch that broke it.

Step-by-Step: Capturing and Breeding the Parents
Roujay is the harder of the two to find on the overworld — it doesn’t spawn on the main Palpagos islands at all. It lives exclusively inside the World Tree, the 1.0 story area, which has roughly 80 mapped spawn points once you’re inside.[10] If you haven’t reached that area yet, you can breed a Roujay first from Dupin (Fire) + Univolt Cryst (Ice), both of which spawn on the main map, then use that Roujay for the Anubis pairing.[10]
Azurmane is more straightforward: it’s an Electric-type Pal that spawns rarely at Scorched Hill and Frozen Coral Hill on Feybreak, mostly at night, with an Alpha variant also patrolling Frozen Coral Hill if you want a stronger individual to start with.[9] Neither parent requires fighting a boss — both are wild-catchable with a mid-tier sphere. Azurmane in particular has real capture resistance for a non-boss Pal, and an under-powered sphere just wastes Pal Spheres you’ll want later; our Pal Sphere guide breaks down when a Hyper Sphere clears a catch like this versus when you need to step up to a Giga.
Once you have one of each, a Breeding Farm (Tech Level 19) and a Cake handle the rest. Any Cake variant works the same way here — Vegetable Cake or Extravagant Vegetable Cake both guarantee the pairing, since the fixed rank formula isn’t subject to the mutation roll that Cake quality otherwise influences.[2] If your base’s Handiwork queue is the bottleneck slowing this whole project down, that’s actually the exact problem Anubis itself solves once you have one — see the section below on why it’s worth breeding in the first place.
Egg Type and Incubation Time
Azurmane + Roujay produces a Huge Rocky Egg, the same egg tier Anubis itself hatches from directly — a useful sanity check if you’re unsure whether your farm produced the right egg.[1][7] Huge-tier eggs carry a fixed 72-hour baseline hatch time in a standard incubator at 0% temperature comfort. Push the incubator to “Optimal” comfort (100%) and the multiplier jumps to x2.0, cutting the same egg down to 36 hours; “Very Comfortable” (50%) sits in between at x1.5, roughly 48 hours.[3]
That timer is fixed by the egg’s size tier, not by which parents produced it — every Huge egg in the game hatches on the same 72/48/36-hour schedule regardless of species. Which is the actual point of this article: since incubation speed can’t be optimized by parent choice, the only lever left for getting to Anubis “fast” is cutting the time spent catching the parents themselves, and that’s a rarity problem, not a hatching-time problem. If you haven’t set up incubator temperature matching yet, our egg hatching guide covers the exact tier and placement that gets you to Optimal fastest.
Which Path Fits Your Playstyle
| Player Type | What to Do |
|---|---|
| New player | Breed a Roujay from Dupin + Univolt Cryst first if you haven’t reached the World Tree yet, then catch an Azurmane on a Feybreak night run. Don’t chase Penking + Bushi — it’s outdated advice and won’t produce Anubis anymore. |
| Casual player | If you’re already past the World Tree story area, just catch one wild Roujay and one wild Azurmane directly — skip the sub-breeding step entirely and go straight to the Breeding Farm. |
| Hardcore / optimizer | Farm wild Azurmane and Roujay specifically for Artisan or Lucky before breeding — both passives inherit from either parent, so stack your target list onto both first (see below). |
| Completionist | Log the Alpha Anubis fight as a second acquisition route (below) if you want a second copy without running a full breeding cycle. |
Best Passive Skills for Anubis (And How to Breed Them In)
Anubis earns its spot on a base through raw work stats, not combat: Handiwork 6 and Mining 6 are both rare ratings — few Pals hit level 6 in either job — and a 4 in Transporting means one Pal covers crafting, smelting, and hauling at once.[1] The passives worth breeding in reflect that. Artisan adds a flat +50% Work Speed with no drawback, and Lucky adds +20% Work Speed on top of +15% Attack and +15% Defense, making it useful even if you occasionally use Anubis to fight.[4][5] Anubis also naturally spawns with Earth Emperor, a Ground-damage passive (+20%) that matters only if you’re building it for combat, not for base work.[1][6]
Passives inherit from either parent during breeding, split across two rolls: one determines how many passives carry over, the second fills any remaining slots randomly — it doesn’t matter whether Artisan or Lucky sits on the Azurmane or the Roujay, either parent can pass it to the Anubis offspring.[2] The practical move is to farm a few wild Azurmane and Roujay first, check their passive slots, and breed the pair that’s already holding two or three of your target list rather than the first two you happen to catch.
Backup Route: Catch the Wild Alpha
Anubis is also available directly as a field Alpha boss near the Anubis Dunes fast-travel point, no breeding required.[12] It’s a Ground-type fight, so bringing Grass-type Pals — Lyleen, Vaelet, or Verdash are commonly recommended — covers its weakness, and stat-boosting food like Omelets or Marinated Mushrooms before the fight adds a workable Attack and Defense buff.[13] Sources disagree on the Alpha’s exact level, so don’t assume a specific number going in — treat it as a tougher fight than either parent species and gear up accordingly rather than walking in underprepared.[12][13]
Breeding still wins on reliability: the Alpha is one fixed encounter you either win or don’t, while the Azurmane + Roujay pair is a guaranteed hatch once both parents are in the farm, repeatable as many times as you want a spare. The two paths also solve different problems. Catching the Alpha gets you exactly one Anubis, on your schedule, the moment you’re strong enough to fight it — no farm setup, no Cake, no incubator management. Breeding costs more early setup (a Tech Level 19 unlock, a Cake, roughly three days of incubation) but scales: once the farm is running, a second or third Anubis is just another Cake and another wait, with no combat risk and no chance of dying to a Ground-type boss mid-fight. If you already have a base with Handiwork Pals and a spare incubator slot, breeding is the lower-friction option even accounting for the setup cost.
FAQ
Does it matter which parent — Azurmane or Roujay — is male or female?
No. Palworld’s breeding system only requires one male and one female between the two chosen species; it doesn’t care which species holds which gender. Both Azurmane and Roujay work either way, so breed whichever gendered pair you happen to catch first.[2]
Is Penking + Bushi worth trying anyway, just in case a source is wrong about it changing?
No — this isn’t a case of conflicting sources, it’s a documented patch change. Game8’s own breeding guide states plainly that the pairing stopped working after the 1.0 update rebalanced breeding ranks, and the math backs it up: floor((520+640+1)/2) = 580 lands on Sibelyx’s rank today, not Anubis’s 480.[2][11] Burning a Cake on that pair now gets you a Pal you probably didn’t want.
Why not just breed two Anubis together once I have one?
That works and it’s the more efficient loop once you own a starting pair — same-species breeding is a separate override that always reproduces the same species, so two Anubis paired together skip the rank math entirely.[2] The Azurmane + Roujay route matters specifically for getting your first one without farming a boss fight or gambling on wild spawns.
Is Anubis actually worth breeding over other Handiwork Pals?
For a dedicated crafting-and-mining base, yes — a Handiwork 6 / Mining 6 combination is genuinely rare across the Paldeck, and stacking Artisan plus Lucky on top turns one Pal into what would otherwise take two specialists to cover.[1][4][5] If your base only needs Handiwork and nothing else, a cheaper single-job specialist may still be the more efficient use of a base slot — Anubis earns its place specifically when you need both jobs covered without adding a second worker.
