There are 13 Silent Hill games, from Silent Hill (1999) to Silent Hill: Townfall, which launched on 24 September 2026. Only five of them can be bought or downloaded today on a PS5, an Xbox Series console or a PC: the Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill f, Townfall, the free PS5 game The Short Message and, on GOG only, Silent Hill 4: The Room. The other eight need old hardware, used discs or a PS3 store that Sony is shutting down.
The story side is simpler than the fan wikis make it look. Three games form a chain (Origins, Silent Hill, Silent Hill 3), and nearly everything else, Townfall included, stands alone. Below: all 13 in release order with scores, the story order and how firm each link is, what each platform sells, and which ones are worth your time.
Quick start: what to do first
- Start with the Silent Hill 2 remake (2024). It scores 86 on PS5 and 87 on PC, the top of the games on sale, and it needs no earlier knowledge.
- Play Silent Hill f (2025) or Townfall (2026) next. Both are standalone, so order does not matter.
- Only chase the story chain (Origins, Silent Hill, Silent Hill 3) if you own old hardware or accept used discs. None is sold on a current store.
- On PS5, grab The Short Message while it is free. It scores 52, so treat it as a curiosity.
- On PC with a small budget, Silent Hill 4: The Room is $9.99 on GOG.

All 13 Silent Hill games in release order
Release order runs from 1999 to 2026. The highest score on the list is the 2001 original of Silent Hill 2 (89), followed by a three-way tie at 86: Silent Hill, the 2024 remake and Silent Hill f.
| # | Game | Year | Launch platform | Metacritic | Story link |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Silent Hill | 1999 | PlayStation | 86 | Start of the chain |
| 2 | Silent Hill 2 | 2001 | PS2 | 89 | Standalone, same town |
| 3 | Silent Hill 3 | 2003 | PS2 | 85 | Direct sequel to #1 |
| 4 | Silent Hill 4: The Room | 2004 | PS2 | 76 | Loosely linked |
| 5 | Silent Hill: Origins | 2007 | PSP | 78 | Prequel to #1 |
| 6 | Silent Hill: Homecoming | 2008 | PS3 | 71 | Standalone, cameos |
| 7 | Silent Hill: Shattered Memories | 2009 | Wii | 79 | Reimagining of #1 |
| 8 | Silent Hill: Downpour | 2012 | Xbox 360 | 68 | Standalone |
| 9 | Silent Hill: Book of Memories | 2012 | PS Vita | 58 | Unplaced |
| 10 | Silent Hill: The Short Message | 2024 | PS5 | 52 | Spin-off, nods to earlier games |
| 11 | Silent Hill 2 (remake) | 2024 | PS5, PC | 86 | Retells #2 |
| 12 | Silent Hill f | 2025 | PS5, PC, Xbox Series | 86 | Standalone |
| 13 | Silent Hill: Townfall | 2026 | PS5, PC | 80 | Standalone |
Years, platforms and scores come from the Wikipedia article for each game (series overview), and each score is for the launch platform shown, so PC ports of the older games score lower (Silent Hill 4 is 76 on PS2 and 67 on PC). Our counting rule: 13 standalone games, excluding the 2012 HD Collection compilation, the delisted P.T. teaser, and the arcade, mobile and Japan-only spin-offs. A Silent Hill 1 remake by Bloober Team was announced in June 2025 and is still in development, so it is not counted.

The score column makes one thing plain: the first three games scored 85 to 89, the five Western-studio games (2007 to 2012) scored 58 to 79, and the modern releases are back at 80 to 86 apart from The Short Message.
Release order or story order?
Play in release order unless you specifically want the Alessa story, because only three games continue each other and the rest can be played in any order. We found no master timeline published by Konami; the placements below come from the games’ own Wikipedia articles, which cite the games and developer statements.
| Group | Games | What connects them | How firm |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Alessa chain | Origins, then Silent Hill, then Silent Hill 3 | Origins is a prequel set several years before the first game; Silent Hill 3 is a direct sequel to it. | Firm |
| Linked, not continuous | Silent Hill 4: The Room | Walter Sullivan is mentioned in Silent Hill 2 through a newspaper article about his suicide in jail, and journalist Joseph Schreiber is first mentioned in Silent Hill 3. The developers said the game was always meant to connect to the series. | Loose |
| Same town, new people | Silent Hill 2 and its 2024 remake | Silent Hill 2 is set in the same town but a different area and does not follow the first game’s characters or plot. | Standalone |
| Cameos only | Homecoming | Origins’ Travis Grady appears briefly and the Bogeyman boss resembles Pyramid Head. | Standalone |
| Self-contained | Downpour | Planned as a self-contained story like Silent Hill 2, not tied to the Alessa plot. | Standalone |
| Alternate universe | Shattered Memories | Keeps Harry Mason’s search for his daughter but changes the plot and characters. | Separate |
| No placement | Book of Memories | Wikipedia does not classify it as canon or alternate reality; a joke ending features earlier characters. | Unplaced |
| Modern spin-offs | The Short Message, f, Townfall | Each is set somewhere new (the German town of Kettenstadt, 1960s Japan, 1996 Scotland). Wikipedia calls f and Townfall standalone; The Short Message only references earlier games. | Standalone |
The takeaway: if you want the story in order, it is Origins, Silent Hill, Silent Hill 3, with Silent Hill 4 afterwards for its links to games 2 and 3, and nothing else needs a slot. We would still play Silent Hill before Origins: Origins is set earlier, but prequels usually land better when you already know where the story ends up.
Where does Townfall fit?
Nowhere in particular, by design. Wikipedia calls Townfall a standalone spin-off, set in 1996 in St. Amelia, a fictional Scottish island town based on St Monans in Fife, with a new protagonist, Simon Ordell. Producer Motoi Okamoto said Konami wanted to reinterpret Silent Hill as “a phenomenon, a state of mind” rather than a physical location, which fits the move out of the American town.
Metacritic scores are 80 on both PS5 and PC (“generally favourable”). Screen Burn Interactive (formerly No Code) developed it, and Konami and Annapurna Interactive co-published it. Steam lists it on 23 September 2026 and Wikipedia gives 24 September, most likely a time-zone difference; the PC version reached GOG on 9 October. There is no Xbox version: TechRadar reported in early 2026 that Xbox was absent from the official listings, and we found no later announcement. That echoes the Silent Hill 2 remake, which reached Xbox over a year after launch.
What you can actually get today
Five of the 13 games are sold on a current store, and the two cheapest are the weakest. The table lists every game, where it is sold on a PS5, Xbox Series console or PC, and what the other eight need.
| Game | Sold today on PS5, Xbox or PC? | Otherwise |
|---|---|---|
| Silent Hill (1999) | No | Went onto the PS3 and PSP stores in 2009; we could not load the live PS3 listing |
| Silent Hill 2 (2001) | No (the remake is sold) | Used PS2, Xbox or PC discs; HD Collection discs |
| Silent Hill 3 | No | Used PS2 or PC discs; HD Collection discs |
| Silent Hill 4: The Room | Yes, PC on GOG ($9.99) | PS2, Xbox and PC discs |
| Origins | No | PSP and PS2 discs |
| Homecoming | No (not in Steam’s catalog today) | PS3 and Xbox 360 discs; the North American PC release was Steam-only |
| Shattered Memories | No | Wii, PS2 and PSP discs |
| Downpour | No (removed from the Microsoft Store) | Xbox 360 or PS3 disc; the Xbox 360 version plays on Xbox One via backward compatibility |
| Book of Memories | No | PS Vita only; the Vita store is closing |
| The Short Message | Yes, PS5, free | A $70 Deluxe physical edition from Limited Run Games |
| Silent Hill 2 (remake) | Yes, PS5, Xbox Series, PC | Leaves PS Plus Extra and Premium in October 2026 |
| Silent Hill f | Yes, PS5, Xbox Series, PC | No extra route needed |
| Townfall | Yes, PS5, PC (no Xbox) | No extra route needed |
Here is the platform view. Steam sells Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f at $69.99 each and Townfall at $49.99 (list prices checked on 13 October 2026), and its search returns no other Silent Hill game, only DLC and a Dead by Daylight chapter. GOG sells those three and Silent Hill 4: The Room at $9.99. The Silent Hill 2 remake reached Xbox Series on 21 November 2025 and Silent Hill f is on Xbox too, so Xbox owners get two games. PS5 owners get four, because The Short Message is a free PS5 download, confirmed still free by Push Square in July 2026. PlayStation Universe reports that the Silent Hill 2 remake leaves PS Plus Extra and Premium in October, so it will not stay a subscription freebie.
The two cheapest ways in are the lowest-scoring: The Short Message is free and scores 52, and Silent Hill 4 is $9.99 and scores 67 on its original PC release. The three games that score 80 or more cost $49.99 to $69.99 at list price.
Why the old games are gone
Silent Hill 2 and 3 had one console re-release in the HD era, the Silent Hill HD Collection (2012), and it is not worth hunting down: it was built from incomplete source code, shipped with frame-rate, fog and audio-sync problems, and its Xbox 360 patch was cancelled. Hardcore Gaming 101 says Downpour was “removed from purchase on the Microsoft Store for unknown reason”. We found no Konami statement explaining either gap.

Sony is also winding down the store that carried the oldest game. According to Wikipedia’s PlayStation Store article, Sony announced on 1 July 2026 that it will gradually close the PS3 and PS Vita stores, with a full closure in July 2027, and the PSP store closed in July 2021. That makes the original Silent Hill a game to buy on PS3 sooner rather than later if you have one, though we could not confirm the live listing or price.
The realistic routes to the original chain
If you want the Alessa story, the routes are physical and a little fiddly. Treat the list as a shopping brief, not a guarantee, because we could not check live listings on closed stores.
- Silent Hill (1999): an original PlayStation disc, or the PS3 store while it stays open. Wikipedia notes it reached PlayStation Network on PS3 and PSP in 2009.
- Silent Hill 3 (2003): a used PS2 or PC disc. The HD Collection also contains it, and we would skip that.
- Origins (2007): a PSP or PS2 disc. European PlayStation Network added the PS2 version in April 2014, but we could not confirm it is still sold.
- Silent Hill 2 (2001): play the remake instead unless you specifically want the original’s 89.
Used prices move with collector demand, so check recently sold listings rather than asking prices. The Bloober Team remake of the first game would change this list, but it has no date yet.
Which Silent Hill games are worth your time?
The best order for most people is the Silent Hill 2 remake, then Silent Hill f and Townfall in whichever order suits you. The table adjusts that for different players.
| If you are | Play | Delay or skip | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| New to Silent Hill | Silent Hill 2 remake | Everything before 2024 | Best-rated game on sale, and it assumes nothing. |
| A PC player on a budget | Silent Hill 4 ($9.99), then the remake on sale | Full-price purchases of the $69.99 games | The cheapest game on sale with ties to the older games, and it is GOG-only. |
| Following the story chain | Silent Hill, Silent Hill 3, then Origins | Nothing; Silent Hill 4 comes after | All three need old hardware or discs, so expect effort, not a checkout page. |
| On Xbox | Silent Hill 2 remake, Silent Hill f | Townfall, The Short Message | Neither has an Xbox version. |
| A completionist | All 13, the five on sale first | Nothing, in time | The four paid games on sale total $199.96 at list price; the other eight cost patience. |
The $199.96 is our arithmetic from the list prices above: $49.99 + $69.99 + $69.99 + $9.99 (the $9.99 is Silent Hill 4 on GOG). We did not check sale prices, and the remake in particular is discounted often, so the real total can be lower.
Once you finish, our best horror games of 2026 ranked by scare type shows where to go next. For a very different, much shorter horror game, our Buckshot Roulette guide covers its odds and all 10 items. If you are tuning a PC for the remake, our Silent Hill 2 remake settings guide covers its ray-tracing cost, and our Resident Evil 9 PC settings guide names the one setting that costs the most FPS in Capcom’s horror game. We have the same treatment for another horror franchise in FNAF games in order.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to play the older games before Townfall?
No. Wikipedia describes it as a standalone spin-off, set in a new Scottish town, with a new protagonist. If it makes you curious about the series, the better starting point is the Silent Hill 2 remake.
Should you play the Silent Hill 2 remake or the original?
The remake, because it is the only version you can buy today, and it retells the 2001 story rather than continuing it. The original scored higher (89 on PS2 against 86 for the remake on PS5), so a used disc is worth considering if you already own a PS2.
Can you still play Silent Hill 3 today?
Only from used discs or the HD Collection, which we would skip. No current-generation store sells it, and a remake of the first game, not the third, is the one Bloober Team has announced.
Is Silent Hill f connected to the other games?
No. Wikipedia calls it a standalone spin-off set in 1960s Japan, and Konami described it as “100% Japanese horror.” It scores 86 on PS5 and 85 on PC, and it is on Xbox Series too.
Is The Short Message worth downloading?
It is free on PS5, so the cost is only your time, but it scores 52 and only 31% of critics on OpenCritic recommend it. Download it if you have a PS5 and are curious; do not let it be your first Silent Hill.
Which Silent Hill game should I play first?
The Silent Hill 2 remake. It scores 86 to 87, runs on every current platform, and nothing earlier is required.

I've been playing video games for over 20 years, spanning everything from early PC titles to modern open-world games. I started Switchblade Gaming to publish the kind of accurate, well-researched guides I always wanted to find — built on primary sources, tested in-game, and kept up to date after patches. I currently focus on Minecraft and Pokémon GO.
