The RAM figure looks like a closer match on paper — Nightingale lists 16GB minimum[3], and Deck ships with 16GB — but a desktop RX 580 build pairs that 16GB of system RAM with its own separate 8GB of dedicated VRAM, while Deck’s 16GB is unified memory the CPU and GPU share. There’s less real headroom than the matching number suggests, which is one more reason the aggressive Performance preset earns its place over a lighter one.
Upscaler Choice: Why TSR, Not FSR
Nightingale ships three upscaling options, but on Steam Deck they aren’t interchangeable. Community testing found FSR 3 introduces stutter and artifacting through Proton that Unreal Engine’s own TSR doesn’t[5], and Intel’s XeSS costs roughly 5 FPS versus TSR at the same quality tier for no visible gain on this hardware[6]. TSR is Unreal-native, so it doesn’t depend on a vendor driver path translated through Proton — that’s the whole difference. The 2026 Fix for the Multiplayer Portal Crash
If you’ve hit a crash while traveling through a portal in multiplayer, you’re not imagining it — players were still reporting it as of June 2025, more than a year after launch[7]. Nightingale’s March 2026 patch addressed the Steam Deck side of it directly: developer Jon explained on Steam that join codes use a custom Steam signalling system Proton doesn’t yet support, and disabled join-code hosting on Steam Deck specifically to stop the crash[2]. That’s a narrower fix than it sounds: Steam friend-invite joining between a Deck and a PC still works normally. If you’re hosting from a Deck, skip the join code and invite through your Steam friends list instead.
Playing Offline on Steam Deck
Early guides for this game complain that Nightingale needed a constant internet connection even to play solo — a real problem for handheld sessions away from Wi-Fi.
