Elden Ring Nightreign: Recluse vs Executor — Magic DPS vs Melee DPS Broken Down by Nightlord

Verified against Patch 1.03.2, June 2026.

The Nightfarer selection screen doesn’t tell you what you need to know most: which character hits harder against the specific Nightlord you’re about to face. Recluse and Executor are Nightreign’s two glass-cannon options — both punishing to play, both capable of carrying a run when optimised — but the comparison isn’t a static tier list. It’s a matchup chart, and the margin swings dramatically based on which Nightlord you’re fighting.

Recluse cycles through all four elemental damage types, so she can always exploit the boss she’s facing. Executor deals physical and status damage — powerful when it procs, but several Nightlords are immune to his best status effects, which cuts his Tenacity passive out of the equation entirely. By the end of this guide you’ll know which character has the higher DPS ceiling per Nightlord, and which playstyle to build toward.

Who Is the Recluse?

Recluse is Nightreign’s dedicated spellcaster, and the only base-game Nightfarer who brings built-in team healing. Her stat line reflects that specialisation: 200 base HP — lowest of any Nightfarer — against the highest FP pool in the roster (80 base), with S-tier scaling in both Intelligence and Faith. That dual attribute ceiling lets her cast sorceries and incantations from the same build without compromising either.

Her character skill, Magic Cocktail, is what makes her DPS ceiling elastic. Every time Recluse deals elemental damage to enemies, she absorbs affinity residues — blue for Magic, red for Fire, yellow for Lightning, gold for Holy. Collect three residues in any combination, trigger Magic Cocktail, and you cast one of 12 distinct cocktail spells. Three Fire residues produce a ground-spreading flame that burns for some time. Mix Magic, Fire, and Lightning to conjure a Gravity Orb that pulls enemies inward before detonating for massive AoE damage.

The deeper function is elemental flexibility. If the Nightlord resists Magic but is weak to Holy, you switch to incantations, collect Holy residues from expedition trash mobs beforehand, and arrive at the boss door already pre-loaded for bonus damage. No other base-game Nightfarer can do this.

Her ultimate, Soulblood Song, marks nearby enemies with blood sigils. Allies who hit marked targets recover HP and FP proportional to damage output — making Recluse the only source of sustained team healing among the base eight Nightfarers.

The trade-off: 200 HP means one unguarded hit punishes harder than it does for anyone else on the roster. Positioning and dodge-frame awareness are load-bearing, not optional. For a full Recluse build, see our dedicated Recluse Guide.

Who Is the Executor?

Executor plays like a Nightreign-native Sekiro. His character skill, Suncatcher, draws the Cursed Sword — a deflect tool that negates incoming damage when timed correctly, deals stagger damage to the attacker, and powers a follow-up lunging strike. Movement is hampered while the Cursed Sword is active, so the practical rhythm is: draw sword, deflect, punish, sheathe and reposition.

His passive, Tenacity, provides approximately 20% attack power and a stamina recovery boost for around 20 seconds every time he triggers or cures a status effect. His S-tier Dexterity and Arcane scaling feeds this directly: Rivers of Blood, Hand of Malenia, and dual Nagakibas with Bleed or Poison infusions are the optimal weapon choices.

His ultimate, Aspects of the Crucible: Beast, transforms him for 15 seconds into a beast form with a multi-hit combo string, a crowd-staggering roar that can also revive fallen allies, and full HP restoration on cast. Patch 1.03.2 meaningfully improved this: critical hit attack power is now higher while the Cursed Sword is active, deflect stamina cost is reduced, and Crucible: Beast gained both a power boost and damage negation during skill attacks. For players who can consistently land deflects, those crit improvements matter.

The DPS Mechanic Gap Explained

Recluse’s damage output adapts to whatever she’s fighting. Executor’s doesn’t.

Recluse’s S-tier Intelligence and Faith let her equip both sorceries (Magic damage) and incantations (Fire, Lightning, Holy) in the same build. If a Nightlord is weak to Lightning, slot lightning incantations before you leave camp. If it resists Magic, stop casting Glintstone spells and lean on fire or holy alternatives. The Magic Cocktail system amplifies this further: by tagging trash mobs with the right elemental damage during the expedition, she arrives at the Nightlord fight pre-loaded with cocktail casts tuned to the boss’s specific weakness.

Executor’s DPS equation is simpler and more rigid: physical damage from Dexterity scaling plus status buildup (Bleed, Poison, Scarlet Rot) triggers Tenacity for a 20% attack window. When the loop functions, he’s competitive. When the Nightlord is immune to his status effects, the loop breaks entirely:

  • No status proc means no Tenacity activation
  • Damage drops to raw physical with no elemental modifier
  • Physical damage carries no bonus percentage against any Nightlord

This isn’t a minor penalty. Tenacity is Executor’s primary damage multiplier. Losing it against an immune boss is the equivalent of removing Recluse’s spell slots — except Recluse never loses her spell slots.

The result: Recluse has a higher theoretical DPS ceiling against most Nightlords because she can always find a damage type that exploits a weakness. Executor has a higher floor in optimal conditions — specifically when status procs freely and his deflect chain runs cleanly.

Nightlord Matchup Breakdown

The table below covers all eight base Nightlords. “Higher DPS ceiling” reflects a fully optimised build on each side — Recluse with appropriate elemental spells equipped, Executor with status weapons. Elemental negation data sourced from the Fextralife community wiki (positive negation = damage blocked; negative = weakness, takes bonus damage).

NightlordKey WeaknessExecutor Status?Higher DPS Ceiling

Caligo, Miasma of NightFire (−35%)Scarlet Rot & Madness both immune (542)Recluse
Heolstor, the NightlordHoly (−35% Ph1, −20% Ph2)Bleed immune (542)Recluse

*Gnoster resists Magic (+50 negation). Recluse only holds the edge here with fire spells equipped — a pure sorcery build underperforms. Executor’s physical damage goes through at standard value and may match or beat Recluse if she hasn’t swapped to fire.

Three matchups worth unpacking in detail:

Gladius, Beast of Night. Both Bleed and Poison carry 542-point buildup requirements — effectively immune for normal play. Executor cannot proc Tenacity here at all. With no attack buff active and no elemental weakness to exploit, he operates at base physical damage. Recluse hitting with Holy incantations deals 35% more damage than neutral. Over a full Nightlord fight, that margin compounds.

Caligo, Miasma of Night. Both Scarlet Rot and Madness have 542-point immunity on Caligo. Executor’s three primary status options are all locked out. Recluse’s fire spells hit for 35% bonus damage, and collecting Fire residues from the expedition’s trash mobs feeds Magic Cocktail casts throughout the fight. This is the widest DPS gap in the roster — Executor has almost no route to his optimal output.

Adel, Baron of Night. The clear Executor match. Adel has 154-point Poison resistance — high but not immune — and Executor’s S-tier Arcane scaling stacks Poison buildup faster than any other Nightfarer. Once Poison procs, Tenacity activates, Executor runs at approximately 120% attack power, and his parry-punish rhythm hits harder than Recluse can match here. Adel carries no major elemental weakness, so Recluse has no spike damage angle to exploit.

When to Pick Recluse vs Executor

The matchup data favours Recluse for raw DPS ceiling, but run context and playstyle matter.

Post-1.03.2, optimising deflect critsImproved payoff

If you’re a hardcore optimiser running full Nightlord clears, Recluse gives you more tools to control DPS output across the entire roster. If you’re a Sekiro veteran who can reliably hit deflects and enjoy melee, Executor post-1.03.2 is a legitimate choice — especially in solo mode where co-op chaos doesn’t disrupt your deflect windows.

Neither is a good starting point for new Nightreign players. Both have low HP, high skill floors, and punishing mechanics when played suboptimally. Guardian and Wylder are far more forgiving entry points. FAQ

Does Patch 1.03.2 make Executor better than Recluse overall?

Not overall, but it tightens the gap in the right conditions. The patch boosted critical hit damage while the Cursed Sword is active, reduced stamina drain per deflection, and improved Crucible: Beast’s output. For players who can consistently land deflects, those crit improvements are real. What the patch doesn’t fix is Executor’s core problem: Tenacity still goes dormant against status-immune Nightlords. Against Gladius, Caligo, and Heolstor — three of the eight base bosses — Recluse’s elemental advantage still stands. Recluse received no changes in 1.03.2.

Can Executor exploit elemental weaknesses at all?

Not effectively. Executor’s S-tier scaling is in Dexterity and Arcane — neither attribute powers elemental spells. He can technically equip weapons with Lightning or Magic affinity infusions, but they scale poorly with his stat line and underperform compared to straight Dex/Arcane builds. Elemental exploitation is firmly Recluse’s territory. If you’re playing Executor into a Nightlord that resists your status effects and is weak to an element, the right move is to bring a Recluse or Revenant alongside you in co-op. See the Nightreign Beginner’s Guide for team composition guidance.
