Which BG3 Illithid Powers Are Actually Worth It in Honour Mode (And How to Skip the Story Penalty)

The illithid powers tree is BG3’s best-kept open secret. Twenty-five mind flayer abilities you unlock by swallowing parasites — but most guides skip the part where spending even one specimen locks you into a DC 21 Wisdom saving throw in Act 3, one that most builds will fail in Honour Mode, and that forces your character into partial illithid transformation whether you chose it or not.

This guide answers two things most tier lists don’t: which powers are actually worth it for Honour Mode specifically, and how to get the single most important modifier in the system — Awakened — without spending a single parasite specimen. That distinction keeps your Act 3 options completely open.

Verified against BG3 Patch 8. All stated values are current as of the final patch.

How the Illithid Power System Works

Illithid powers are organized across a circular talent tree with three tiers. You unlock abilities by spending Mind Flayer Parasite Specimens — parasite items collected throughout Acts 1–3. One specimen unlocks one adjacent power, starting from the inner ring.

  • Inner ring (5 powers): No prerequisites. Any character can take these immediately after the system unlocks.
  • Middle ring (10 powers): Each requires the adjacent inner-ring power as a prerequisite.
  • Outer ring (10 powers): Locked behind the Astral-Touched Tadpole offered by the Emperor in Act 3. Regular specimens cannot unlock these.

All active illithid powers default to costing a full action — which means they compete directly with everything else your build does. The modifier that changes this is Awakened: a passive that converts every illithid power to a bonus action. Awakened doesn’t come from spending specimens. It comes from a completely separate in-game event, which means you can have it without touching your specimen count at all.

Quick Start Checklist

Before spending a single specimen, work through these in order:

  1. Complete the Omeluum quest in the Underdark (Act 1 or 2 via the Underdark path) — rewards Survival Instinct at zero specimen cost
  2. Travel to Crèche Y’llek via the Mountain Pass route (Act 1) — use the Zaith’isk chair to earn Awakened through saving throws, not tadpole spend
  3. Collect parasite specimens throughout the run — hold them, don’t spend
  4. Reach Act 3: decide whether to accept the Emperor’s Astral-Touched Tadpole (unlocks the outer ring + Fly) or refuse freely
  5. If spending specimens: Favourable Beginnings → Luck of the Far Realms is the safest two-specimen path
  6. Check companion approval tendencies before using powers in front of plot-sensitive party members

This sequence gives you Awakened, Survival Instinct, and Illithid Persuasion with zero specimens consumed — and preserves a free refusal option at the Emperor’s Act 3 scene.

The Story Penalty — And How to Avoid It in Honour Mode

At the start of Act 3, the Emperor offers you an Astral-Touched Tadpole. Accept it and your character undergoes partial ceremorphosis: gaining Fly, access to the entire outer ring, and cosmetic black veins. All three major endings remain accessible regardless.

Here is the Honour Mode trap: if you have consumed even one regular parasite specimen before this scene, you must pass a DC 21 Wisdom saving throw to resist the Emperor’s offer. A character with Wisdom 16 (+3 modifier) and Proficiency +5 has a +8 saving throw — meaning they need to roll a 13 or higher to pass (40% success rate). Roll under that, and you become half-illithid against your will, which in Honour Mode means no opportunity to reload.

This check is not telegraphed by the game. It appears only when you’ve previously spent specimens. Players who never consult a guide often hit it mid-run without warning.

The free path around it: Don’t consume any regular specimens before Act 3. Keep every parasite you find, but don’t spend them on the talent tree. When the Emperor’s scene plays, there is no Wisdom check — you simply choose to accept, decline, or keep the tadpole in inventory for later. The DC 21 check only fires if you’ve previously invested in the inner or middle ring.

The crucial clarification: the Zaith’isk chair (which grants Awakened) does not count as consuming a specimen. Using the chair is a saving throw sequence, not a tadpole investment. You can have Awakened on your character while having spent zero specimens on the talent tree.

How to Get Awakened Without Spending Any Tadpoles

Awakened is the modifier that makes the entire illithid system worth building around. Without it, active powers compete with your action economy — you’re trading an action for an ability that often does less than what your class already offers. With Awakened, those same abilities shift to bonus actions, opening combinations that are impossible any other way: a martial character who pulls a group of enemies with Black Hole then attacks twice; a caster who negates a spell with Psionic Dominance and still casts their full-action spell on the same turn.

To earn it, you use the Zaith’isk — a Githyanki mind-extraction device inside Crèche Y’llek, accessible via the Mountain Pass route in Act 1. Two paths exist:

Path A — Your character in the chair:

  • Pass a DC 12 Intelligence saving throw
  • Pass a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw
  • Pass a DC 18 Constitution saving throw

All three must succeed for Awakened to be granted. Failing any throw inflicts a −2 penalty to that ability score, which can be cleared by consuming one specimen. Pre-buffing with Enhance Ability or Guidance before sitting is valid and removes much of the variance.

Path B — Lae’zel in the chair (no personal saves):

  • Send Lae’zel into the device; she auto-fails all saving throws
  • Succeed on a DC 30 Arcana check at the final stage to acquire Awakened
  • Lae’zel receives permanent −2 Wisdom and −2 Intelligence from not exiting early

Path B suits Wizards and Bards with Arcana proficiency and a high Intelligence score. Path A suits most other builds, particularly if you buff before sitting. Either way: Awakened on your sheet, zero specimens consumed.

Free Powers — What You Get Without Any Specimen Spend

Three abilities require no specimen investment at all:

PowerSourceEffectRecharge
Illithid PersuasionAuto-unlockedForce cultists of the Absolute to obey via tadpole connectionLong rest
Survival InstinctOmeluum quest reward (Underdark)Drop to 3d4 HP instead of 0 HP when downed in combatShort rest
AwakenedZaith’isk chair (Crèche Y’llek)All illithid powers become bonus actionsPermanent passive

Survival Instinct is the most underrated of the three. In Honour Mode — where one death ends the run — absorbing a lethal blow per short rest changes combat mathematics. A 3d4 recovery (average 7–8 HP) is enough to survive one more turn, trigger a healing ability, or get a companion to reach you. It requires no action, no resource, and doesn’t interact with concentration or spell slots. Take the Omeluum quest as early as the Underdark is accessible.

Illithid Power Rankings for Honour Mode

Rankings assume Awakened is active. Without it, every active power drops a full tier because you’re trading your action for it.

S Tier — Spend Specimens Here First

Favourable Beginnings (1 specimen — inner ring)

Your first attack roll or ability check against any target gains your proficiency bonus. Passive, no action required. This makes the first swing of every combat encounter reliably sharper — especially valuable for builds that need to land a specific effect to open a fight: a Bard casting Hypnotic Pattern, a Rogue setting up Sneak Attack, a Paladin landing a Stunning Strike. Outside combat, it applies to dialogue skill checks, making your opening persuasion or deception roll more consistent. At 1 specimen, this is the best specimen investment in the tree.

Luck of the Far Realms (2 specimens total — Favourable Beginnings prerequisite)

As a reaction, convert any successful attack roll into a critical hit. Long rest recharge. Works on any attack roll — weapon, unarmed, Eldritch Blast, ranged. On a Rogue or Thief subclass, this doubles your Sneak Attack dice when triggered. On a Paladin or Warlock with Divine Smite or Hex Warrior, it turns a hit into a 2× crit with full resource multipliers. In Honour Mode boss fights where a single exchange can decide the outcome, a guaranteed critical hit reaction stored for the right moment is the highest single-roll payoff in the system.

A Tier — High Value, Worth the Path

Black Hole (middle-to-outer ring; reached via Displace or Psionic Dominance path)

Pull all creatures within 9 metres to a central point and slow them. Short rest recharge. With Awakened, this costs a bonus action, leaving your full action free for a spell or attack. In Act 3 fights where enemies spawn spread across a large area, pulling a group to one spot for a focused caster or martial character is a significant action advantage. Requires 3–4 specimens to reach depending on path.

Freecast (outer ring — Astral Tadpole required)

Remove the spell slot or charge cost from your next spell or ability. Long rest recharge. For any spellcaster, this is a free additional high-level slot per long rest. In Honour Mode where long-rest frequency is often constrained by supply management, one extra Level 5+ spell per encounter cycle is a meaningful resource gain.

Psionic Dominance (outer ring — Astral Tadpole required)

As a reaction, cancel any targeted spell with a level at or below your proficiency bonus. Long rest recharge. Against the Honour Mode boss fights with legendary caster actions, this functions as a free Counterspell that costs no slot and no spell known. Very situational, but decisive when relevant — particularly against Cazador, the Elder Brain’s spell chain, and the Act 3 enemy mages.

B Tier — Solid, Not Priority

Cull the Weak (2 specimens — Concentrated Blast prerequisite)

Passive: creatures below HP equal to your total unlocked powers count instantly die, dealing 1–4 psychic damage to nearby enemies when they do. In extended fights with high enemy counts, this procs repeatedly once you have 5+ powers active. Less impactful in Honour Mode boss fights with single high-HP targets.

Mind Sanctuary (outer ring — Astral Tadpole required)

For one round, actions and bonus actions are interchangeable — use either type for either category. Long rest. Enables combinations impossible by normal rules: casting a levelled spell and making a weapon attack in the same turn, or using two bonus-action abilities back to back. High ceiling, but locked behind the outer ring.

Displacer Beast Shape (outer ring — Astral Tadpole required)

Transform into an 85 HP displacer beast with multi-hit tentacle attacks. Long rest. Strongest on martial builds that want a secondary tank form for emergency scenarios. The 85 HP serves as a damage buffer, and returning to normal form when shifted out preserves your original HP pool.

C Tier — Skip or Low Priority

Perilous Stakes: Community reports indicate this power was modified in Honour Mode to apply the Vulnerable condition only to allies, removing the intended use case of amplifying enemy damage taken. Based on player testing, it functions as a party buff (healing on ally attacks) with no offensive application in Honour Mode.

Transfuse Health: Sacrifice half your HP to heal a target the same amount. The self-cost is untenable in Honour Mode where HP is your one death-preventing resource.

Concentrated Blast: Deals 3d6 psychic damage — usable only while concentrating on another spell, and requires your full action without Awakened. A prerequisite tax for Cull the Weak, not a power in its own right.

Player-Type Decision Guide

Player TypeRecommended PathSpecimen Budget
Casual playthroughSpend freely — Favourable Beginnings, Luck of the Far Realms, accept Astral Tadpole for outer ring. No meaningful ending consequences.Unlimited
Honour Mode (safety-first)Zero specimens. Get Awakened via Zaith’isk + Survival Instinct via Omeluum. Refuse Emperor freely with no DC check. Accept Astral Tadpole in Act 3 only if you want outer ring — no specimen cost involved.0 specimens
Honour Mode (optimiser)Two specimens: Favourable Beginnings + Luck of the Far Realms. Accept Astral Tadpole in Act 3 for outer ring + Fly. Plan for DC 21 Wisdom save or pre-buff heavily.2 specimens + DC 21 risk
CompletionistMax everything, accept partial then full ceremorphosis if desired. Keep on a separate run from your Honour Mode character.Unlimited

The gap between safety-first and optimiser Honour Mode paths comes down to one question: how confident are you in your build’s Wisdom saving throw at the Act 3 Emperor scene? A Cleric or Druid with Wisdom 20 and Proficiency +5 has a +10 Wisdom save — needing an 11 or higher to pass DC 21 (50%). A Fighter with Wisdom 12 and no Wisdom save proficiency has a +1, needing a 20 (5%). The two-specimen path is only worth considering if your build has genuine Wisdom save strength, or if you’re willing to use an Amulet of Silvanus or similar pre-buff to boost the roll.

The Outer Ring: Is the Astral Tadpole Worth Accepting?

The Astral-Touched Tadpole from the Emperor unlocks all ten outer-ring powers and grants Fly automatically. Fly alone — a no-action-cost movement ability using your full movement speed — permanently changes positioning in every remaining encounter. Enemies on elevated terrain become trivial to reach. Casters can kite indefinitely. Martial characters gain flanking positions without burning a Dash action.

Beyond Fly, the outer ring includes Freecast (one free spell slot per long rest), Mind Sanctuary (action/bonus action swapping), Displacer Beast Shape (85 HP alternate form), and Psionic Dominance (free Counterspell reaction). These are genuinely strong additions for Act 3.

The critical clarification for Honour Mode players: accepting the Astral Tadpole does NOT trigger the DC 21 Wisdom check. That check only fires if you previously consumed regular specimens. If you’ve kept your specimen count at zero and then accept the Astral Tadpole in Act 3, you undergo partial transformation freely — no roll required — and gain access to the full outer ring. This is the safest route to the most powerful tier of illithid abilities.

The cosmetic consequence is permanent black veins on your character’s face. The narrative consequence is a soft acknowledgment that you’ve committed to the half-illithid path. No companion relationship is severed by this choice, and all major endings remain accessible, as confirmed across multiple playthroughs by the community.

For most Honour Mode builds, the optimal sequence is: complete Omeluum → earn Awakened from Zaith’isk → hold all specimens → accept Astral Tadpole in Act 3 → use Freecast and Fly for the remainder of the game. This is the highest-power, lowest-risk path through the system. You can find build-specific context in our BG3 Beginner’s Guide for class framing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using illithid powers lock out any game endings?
No. All three major endings — destroying the Netherbrain with the Crown of Karsus, allowing the Emperor to act, or choosing full ceremorphosis — are accessible regardless of how many specimens you’ve consumed. The transformation choice near the final battle is a separate binary decision, not gated by your powers.

Do companions react negatively to illithid powers?
Yes, with variation. Astarion actively approves of tadpole use. Lae’zel is motivated by cultural context around Githyanki and illithid. Shadowheart and Wyll tend to disapprove of aggressive tadpole adoption. Repeated use near disapproving companions degrades your relationship score. Illithid Persuasion — the auto-unlock — draws no companion reactions, making it genuinely consequence-free.

Is Perilous Stakes worth using in Honour Mode?
No. Community testing indicates Perilous Stakes was changed in Honour Mode to apply the Vulnerable condition only to allies, removing the intended use of amplifying incoming enemy damage. The specimens are better spent on Favourable Beginnings or held for Act 3.

What’s the best illithid power for martial builds that don’t cast spells?
Luck of the Far Realms. A guaranteed critical hit reaction that doesn’t depend on spellcasting modifier, concentration, or any class resource. It converts a successful hit into a critical regardless of build — weapon attacks, unarmed strikes, and even some class-specific abilities qualify. At two specimens total, the cost-to-impact ratio is unmatched for martial characters.
