Verified on BG3 Patch 8 (final content patch), including the Patch 9 hotfix’s lever-access change. Mechanics reflect the current game state.
Most Defiled Temple guides hand you a list of clicks — turn the top disc once, the left disc twice — and call it the solution. It isn’t, not really. Four independently-checked guides for this piece gave four different click sequences for the same puzzle, and none of them agree past the first move. That’s not because the writers got it wrong. It’s because the puzzle’s starting layout isn’t fixed, so a sequence that solves it on one save does nothing useful on yours.
This guide skips the memorized click list and explains what the puzzle is actually checking for, so you can solve it from whatever rotation you’re staring at. It also covers the DC 15 lever that skips the puzzle outright, a ladder shortcut past the room’s resident ogre that most walkthroughs never mention, and what’s actually waiting on the other side of the door.
Quick Start Checklist
- Reach the Defiled Temple through Gut’s chapel in the Shattered Sanctum (Goblin Camp), the spider pit’s cracked floor, or the Zhentarim storeroom’s hidden gap
- Skip the ogre Polma entirely via the wooden ladder tucked into Gut’s private chamber
- Grab the Selunite Journal from Gut’s cabinet and the Dwarf’s Poem from Klagga before touching the discs — both hint at the solution
- Approach the sealed door to trigger a Perception check; a success reveals a hidden lever to its right
- Want to skip the puzzle? Lockpick the lever with a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check — no discs required
- Want the puzzle’s Inspiration reward instead? Rotate the four discs until new moons sit on the illuminated bottom disc, full moons sit opposite on top, and half moons flank the sides
- Sage-background characters only get “The Phases Unfold” Inspiration by physically solving the puzzle — the lever bypass doesn’t grant it
- Loot the Amulet of Misty Step from the gilded chest before heading down into the Underdark
Three Ways Into the Defiled Temple
The Defiled Temple sits beneath the Goblin Camp’s Shattered Sanctum, and there are three separate ways to reach it — most walkthroughs only mention the obvious one.
- Through Gut’s chapel (main route): The locked door in True Soul Gut’s chamber opens with a DC 10 Sleight of Hand check, or with the Priestess’ Key — pickpocket it off Gut or loot it from her body.
- Spider pit cracked floor: From the spider pit area, break the cracked floor to drop through. It’s a genuine level change rather than a simple doorway, so a character without a mobility option like Misty Step or Jump can end up stuck on the wrong side.
- Zhentarim storeroom hole: A narrow gap in the Zhentarim traders’ storeroom on the Risen Road connects through to the same area — useful if you’re already working with the Zhentarim and want to skip the goblin camp entirely.
Gut’s chamber itself splits into two spaces — her bedroom and a private prison guarded by the ogre Polma. Most guides send you through a fight or a persuasion check to get past her. There’s a faster option: a wooden ladder built into the chamber lets you climb straight past Polma without engaging her at all.

Combined with the Selunite Journal sitting in a nearby cabinet — read it before touching the discs, since it hints directly at the puzzle’s logic — this route gets you to the temple door with zero combat and one solid clue already in hand.
The Moon Puzzle: Why Every Guide’s Click List Is Different
Four independently-sourced walkthroughs for this article gave four different disc-rotation sequences. bg3.wiki logs a seven-move sequence (top, top, right, left, bottom, bottom, right, in its own shorthand). GameRant lists a ten-move sequence starting with the top disc once and the left disc three times. Game8 and a Fextralife user comment both describe a shorter five-move version instead: top once, left once, right twice, bottom three times, left twice. TheGamer’s version matches that almost exactly but ends on a single left turn rather than two.
None of these sources are wrong on their own terms. A Fextralife commenter notes the puzzle “has been shortened” at some point in Larian’s patch history, which explains part of the split — but the more useful explanation is that disc puzzles like this typically start from whatever rotation state your save happens to generate, not a layout every player shares. A click list written for one starting position won’t transfer cleanly to yours. That’s the real reason five guides can’t agree, and it’s why memorizing someone else’s sequence is the wrong approach to begin with.
What every source does agree on is the target state — and that’s the only thing you actually need:
- Bottom disc (the one sitting under the beam of light): all new moons — the dark, unlit discs
- Top disc (directly opposite the light): all full moons — the pale, fully-lit discs
- Left and right discs: all half moons

The Selunite Journal and the Dwarf’s Poem both spell this out in the temple’s own lore terms — full moons “match the stars,” and darkness “belongs at the bottom.” Read either one before you start clicking; the game also rewards a DC 15 Investigation check with a hint regardless of whether you’ve found the written clues.
Work disc by disc: check what phase each one currently shows, then rotate it — each click cycles new moon to half moon to full moon and back to new — until it matches its target position. Four short local checks beat one long memorized sequence, and it works no matter what your discs looked like when you walked in.
The DC 15 Skip: Lockpicking the Lever
If the discs aren’t worth your time, there’s a full bypass. Approach the sealed door at the end of the room and your party triggers a DC 15 Perception check — succeed, and a hidden lever appears to the right of the square altar. Use Lockpick on it (DC 15 Sleight of Hand) and the door opens without touching a single disc.
A Larian Studios moderator confirmed on the official forums that this bypass “has always been possible” — it’s an intended alternate solution, not an exploit. The same thread flags a Patch 9 pathing change worth knowing before you try it: characters now have to walk up onto a stairway balcony to reach the lever, rather than triggering it from the floor directly in front of the door. Don’t assume the interaction is bugged if it doesn’t fire immediately at ground level — check the balcony first.
The one thing the lever doesn’t do is grant the puzzle’s Inspiration reward. “The Phases Unfold” — available specifically to characters with the Sage background — only triggers from actually solving the disc puzzle. You can lockpick the lever first to open the door, then go back and solve the puzzle afterward; the game still awards it late.
Which Path Should You Take?
| Player Type | Recommended Path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New player | Lockpick the DC 15 lever | No risk of getting stuck on a puzzle mechanic this early in Act 1 — the door opens the same regardless |
| Casual player | Read the Selunite Journal, then solve by target state | Takes under two minutes once you know the goal, and skips a failed Sleight of Hand roll entirely |
| Completionist / Sage background | Solve the discs manually, don’t touch the lever | Only the manual solve grants “The Phases Unfold” Inspiration — the lever bypass doesn’t count |
| Hardcore / speedrunner | Lockpick the lever if your Sleight of Hand modifier clears DC 15 comfortably, otherwise phase-match the discs | Fastest route when the check succeeds; the disc method is a reliable fallback that doesn’t depend on a die roll |
What Waits Below the Temple
However you open it, the door reveals a long stone stairway descending into the Underdark, ending at the Selunite Outpost — a waypoint that also advances the “Find the Nightsong” quest line. This is one of the earliest points in Act 1 where the game hands you a route into the Underdark without the well-jump or the Zhentarim hideout path, which matters if you’re trying to reach that region before committing to other Goblin Camp storylines.
Before you head down, it’s worth deciding what to carry. Any buff you’re maintaining before the descent is worth checking against our BG3 concentration spells ranked by act guide — losing concentration on a long walk down to a fight you didn’t expect is an easy way to waste a spell slot for nothing. And if you haven’t cleared the Goblin Camp’s other secrets yet, the temple’s three access routes are exactly the kind of thing our 20 hidden rooms in BG3 guide catalogs in full.
FAQ
Do I need to solve the puzzle, or can I always just lockpick the lever?
You can always lockpick the lever — it’s a fully supported alternate solution, not a workaround Larian is patching out. The only reason to solve the discs instead is the Inspiration reward, which is Sage-background-specific and doesn’t apply to most builds. For everyone else, the DC 15 Sleight of Hand check is strictly faster with zero downside.
Why didn’t the click sequence from my last guide work?
Because it was written for a different starting rotation than the one your save generated. Click-list guides only work if your discs happen to start in the same position the writer’s did — which is why this guide leads with the target state instead. Match each disc’s current phase to its goal (new moon bottom, full moon top, half moons on the sides) and you’ll solve it regardless of where you started.
What happens if I fail the Sleight of Hand check on the lever?
Nothing punishing — there’s no trap or alarm tied to a failed lockpick attempt here, unlike some of the Goblin Camp’s other locked containers. You can simply retry, rest to reset the roll, or fall back on solving the puzzle manually instead.
Is the Defiled Temple worth doing before I deal with Gut and the goblins?
Yes, if you use the ladder shortcut — you get the temple’s loot and door access without triggering combat with Polma or committing to a stance on the goblin camp fight yet. The Amulet of Misty Step alone is worth the detour, and nothing about visiting the temple locks you into a Gut confrontation you haven’t chosen. If you’re just starting out and want the bigger picture of Act 1 priorities first, our BG3 beginner’s guide covers where the Goblin Camp fits into your early decisions.
